Chapter 1
Duncan slammed the truck door shut and pulled his handgun from his jacket pocket. "Let's get ready, to kill some fuckers." Duncan smirked to himself.
It had been already two years since this all began; And two years since Courtney left. The buildings of New York had completely been destroyed by these parasites.
It was about midnight when these bloodsuckers came out to feed. Duncan grunted, as he saw one of the daybreakers sucking the soul out of a man with a huge gut. "Bye. Say hello to Satan for me." Duncan lifted the gun and aimed it exactly at it's head. He quickly pulled the trigger and soon guts were flying aimlessly in the air.
Duncan slightly frowned and started for his truck again when there was a scream. "Who's out there!?" Duncan shrieked into the cold night. But, It was a bad idea. Soon the daybreakers were flooding out of their hiding spots and running after Duncan. Duncan gulped and jumped into his truck; He threw the key into the ignition and stomped onto the gas. "Eat my dust!" He yelled. He sped allthe way to Richmond. Ugh, The rich part of New York.
He turned a left and began to wonder. Maybe... Just maybe Courtney would be around here? He began to look around and saw a house that was hidden farther away than anyother.
He made sure his gun was fully loaded before he walked up. He knocked twice before he jammed himself into the door; Making it collapse. "Hello! Anyone here?" Duncan yelled through the entire house. There was a low baby cry, Then a shh.
He followed the sounds as I found two women and a little baby boy. One of the women had mocha, brown, hair and chocolate skin. Her eyes were a deep onyx, But her eyes were filled with weakness. The other had the same hair color as the other but, she had yellow streaks coming down from her scalp. She had sky, blue, eyes and light colored skin.
"Duncan?" The weak looking one whispered. "Courtney?" Duncan replied back. She looked down at the folded bundle and glanced back at me. "What are you doing here?" She asked. "Looking for you; And the rest of my friends. Who's baby is that?" He glanced down at the bundle and saw a small boy with blue, cresent, eyes and brown, mocha hair. "Duncan... I was pregnant. I was going to tell you, But I just didn't need you to worry about something else." Courtney said, calmly. Duncan felt the anger rise inside of him, His fiancée didn't tell him about their own child! She just expects him to forgive her for that. "No." Duncan scowled. Soon the other girl spoke up,"Look, Duncan... The world was coming to an end! How could she tell you tha-"
"Zoey?" Duncan said, In disbelief. Zoey nodded and took his son out of Courtney's arms. "Look, Duncan... I know I hurt y-"
"Courtney.. Save it, Alright?" I grimaced. She nodded slowly and coughed; Puking up blood. "Duncan.... I don't have much to live... I was infected, One of those things bit me..." Duncan's heart fell, "Courtney... You can't.." Duncan walked over to her and cupped her face in his palm. "Duncan... Promise me you will find another.. Please... After I turn I don't want you to be hurt..." He shook his head and backed away. "I can't promise that...." He muttered. "Then... Then... Do it for your son!" Courtney yelled. An outline of tears tracing her eyes. "Please..." She whispered. "I promise.." He lied. She broke down in tears and saw that she was already changing. Duncan couldn't lose her yet; Not after be just found her after only two years. "Duncan! We have to get out of here!" Zoey came in running while holding the baby. I nodded and started fir the door when something stopped me.
Courtneh shouldn't be a monster. She should be where she's supposed to be. Heaven. Duncan turned around and reached for his handgun; raising it up to Courtney's forhead. "See you in Heaven, Court." Those were the last words Courtney ever heard. Duncan pulled the trigger and closed his eyes; hearing her drop to the ground with a thud.
Duncan stood there for about second before going back to his truck. He jumped in and slumped into his seat. "Duncan.... It was going to happen sooner or later.." Zoey Sighed. "Just.... Shutup.. Please.." Duncan begged and started up the truck. Zoey sighed once again and held out her hand. "Here..." In her hand was the engagement ring Duncan had gave Courtney. "Where did yo-"
"Courtney told me if I ever found you, To make sure to give it to you."
Duncan slowly took it and placed it in his jacket pocket. He knew he had to keep the promise he made. Duncan clutched on the wheel and focused on getting to his hiding spot.
"So what's his name?" Duncan asked. Zoey slightly chuckled and glanced over at him. "His name is Jacob, He's 1 year old." Zoey sighed and looked down at the sleeping baby. "Duncan, Remember Daniel?"
"Hale? Yeah... I remember her. We use to be good friends."
Zoey hesitated before telling Duncan. "Well... I saw her the day this all began. She was around the Holland area."
"Okay... So, Why are you telling me this?" He asked, annoyed slightly. "Well, She looked horrible! I just felt so bad! Look, Just see for yourself." She gasped.
Duncan suddenly felt himself moving towards Holland. He didn't know why he felt the urge; He couldve just dropped the sudject and went home. But, strangely he had this connection he just had to check out.
"Fine. We'll go... But, Just because we were friends." Duncan sighed. Zoey smiled and kept quiet along the ride to Holland.
Duncan steered right to left from time to time and stopped when he saw a dark shaded Auborn colored house. A dim light was flickering upstairs. "Zoey... Is this it?" Duncan whispered. Zoey nodded and Walked slowly out of the truck and skipped over to the black tainted door.
"Look... She's a little shaky with trusting people. So, Just a heads up." Zoey warned. Duncan nodded and kept his serious mask on.
Zoey knocked on the door and backed up a few inches away. "Zoe?" A beautiful toned Voice sang. A girl about Duncan's age walked out of the house and greeted Zoey. "Duncan?" Daniel said, shocked. Duncan nodded and looked down.
Daniel had a light chocolate skin color and the blackest eyes Duncan ever saw. Her hair was coal black and layered; Which fell down at her shoulders. She was wearing a black tank top with some fases denim shorts, Along with some black chucks.
Daniel smiled and pulled her former best friend into a hug. "Where have you been Dunk?" Daniel chuckled. "Having a son.. Seeing his mom die... The usual.." Duncan muttered.
Hurt spread across Her eyes. "Oh... Well, come in. It's almost one in the morning." Daniel moved slightly to the left so that Duncan and Zoey; along with Jacob in her hands walk in.
"You guys hungry?" Daniel asked. Zoey nodded and glanced over at Duncan. "Sure. Whatever." Duncan sighed. Zoey shot him a look and continued to caress Jacob.
Duncan caught on and walked over to the kitchen. "So.." Duncan grunted. "Look, you don't need to play nice." Daniel scowled. "I'm not playing, Dan." She scoffed and continued to the fridge. "Please Duncan, when you walked in the temperature went down ten degrees. Spare me the macho act." Daniel grabbed the juice and pressed it against Duncan's chest harshly. "Make yourself useful." Daniel grimaced.
Duncan... You just met your match...
