It was nearly dust and most of the people that trample the streets during rush hour have gone home. There are only a few that remained gently trotting on the sidewalks. A young fox cub was roaming the streets to complete her "mission" as she would call it. "Hunter!" a voice called from a few blocks down.
"Huh?" said the little fox. Then came running an older fox, looking similar to the young cub.
"There you are, Hunter!" Panting the girl. "Mom and dad have been looking for you."
"Heh heh" rubbing her head "sorry, Crystal, I lost track of time."
"Come on" grabbing Hunter's small paw "time to take you back home."
"Do I have to?" complained the young cub.
"Yes you do" stated Crystal.
"Aaawww" she whined.
Crystal laughed "come on it's Ash's birthday. You did get his gift, didn't you?" She asked.
"Well, yeah" said while holding a crumpled newspaper in her paws.
"That's his gift, a crumpled newspaper?!" asked, eyes widened with anger.
"No no, it's what's INSIDE the paper that's the gift. I always see on the TVs, in the window, that when some one gives a gift that they would wrap it in colorful paper" she explained.
Crystal put her paw on her head and rubbed "why did I get a weirdo for a sister. Oh well lets just hope what you got is good."
"It is good" Hunter grumbled.
They walked on the now abandoned streets to outskirts of the city. As they walked the high skyscrapers became small apartment building. They could only hold 20 people or so and most of them were falling apart anyway. The only sounds were the occasional sirens and dog barks, but there was also a tiny tinkling coming from her sister. It was a beautiful silver chain necklace with a white crystal dangling at the bottom. Looking where she put her paws and mind wandering off into space thinking of what it would feel like to fly.
"Hey."
She snapped out of it. Looked at her sister who was doing the same.
"We'er home now you can give Ash your 'special' gift" Crystal teased.
"It IS special" Hunter responded "much better than anything YOU could of found."
"I have no doubt about that it's if Ash LIKES it i'm worried about" her sister explained.
"What? Don't you trust me?" says as the grins.
"Hm, do I have a chose?" Crystal sighed.
"Nope" Hunter smiled "come on ash is probably getting antsy."
Walking into a worn down building that, was somehow still standing, avoiding exposed nails and
climbing over fallen beams. They finally came to a open spot in the building where the moonlight shown in from a gaping hole with only 2 boards. Chris cross over one another blocking only a little light. There were no stars out, that was to be expected from a city life.
"Your back!" a little grey fox came running and stopped at our paws. He looked up with his blue-green eyes full of excitement "what did you get me, huh, what it it what is it?"
"Hold your horses little bro" Hunter took the wrapped gift from behind her back and held it in front of him "here you go."
The energy disappeared from his face "It's just paper."
"That's what I said" Crystal said from behind.
"You have to unwrap it and the gift will be reveled" she explained, yet again.
"Oh OK" Ash snatched the gift from her.
"Wait" a kind voice called from the darkness. A beautiful grey fox appeared from the shadows "you have to wait for your parents to be here BEFORE you open your gift."
"I do?" Ash questioned.
Another figure appeared next to her a it was a tall lean red fox "your mother's right ,Ash"
"Well your here now, so open like there's no tomorrow!" Hunter said excitedly.
Ash nodded and shredded the paper to revel a steel dog tag, it had a few scratches and dents, but it was in pretty good condition. It also had a star in the middle.
"I love it" he got up and hugged his sister "thank you."
"No problem little bro" she laughed.
"Alright alright, off to bed with all of you it's getting really late now" said the lean fox.
"Ok dad" said all 3 of them. They headed into the next room, where they slept.
"You coming to bed, Blaze?" Asked the grey fox
"In a minute, Cinder" he said while staring up at the silent moon with his ice blue eyes. Cinder had left to go to bed but Blaze still stood there, like a statue, until he heard a howl that obviously came from a big dog.
He whispered to himself "I know your still here."
"Huh?" said the little fox. Then came running an older fox, looking similar to the young cub.
