The 7 penguins got back to the HQ, and Ashley immediately flopped in his bunk and fell asleep. Emma went to wake him up, remembering that he wanted some tests done on him, but Kowalski stopped her.
"Just let him sleep for now." He advised quietly. Emma nodded in response, and her attention turned to Skipper.
"C'mon lets get that massive scratch cleaned, it might get infected." She told him, getting a first aid kit from the lab.
"It'll be fine sis." He told her dismissively. Emma ignored this, and got out some disinfectant. "Sis I order you to stop now!" He protested, looking annoyed. Emma just rolled her eyes, and nodded to Rico, who pinned him down. Emma put the disinfectant on his chest, and around the eye. Emma knew that Skipper would have been able to push her and Rico away by now, which just confirmed her theory that he was in a lot of pain. Kowalski came over and looked at his foot.
"It seems that its swollen." Kowalski announced.
"Well done captain obvious!" Skipper retorted sarcastically. Emma tried not to giggle at this. Skipper was always funny when he was annoyed or cranky. She wrapped a bandage around his foot, and Rico let him go. "Emma I told you to stop!" Skipper scolded.
"Skips, your chest and eyes could have got infected, and that would have been serious." Emma replied calmly. "I know you told me to stop, but honestly if it's for your greater good, then I couldn't care at all what you have to say." She added. Skipper looked ready to explode, when Private quickly changed the subject.
"So urm, do you think Ashley will be ok?" He asked.
"I hope." Emma replied, looking at the sleeping penguin. "When he gets up, I'll help him clean his wounds." She decided.
"So what do you want to do for a bit?" Kowalski asked her. Emma looked thoughtful, and grabbed her sleeping bag and pillow, and headed for the lab. Kowalski looked at her in confusion, and he followed her. "Em what are you doing?" He asked. She put the sleeping bag down, and went up to him.
"Well I'm exhausted and I really need to sleep, but I don't want to sleep alone.." She explained, taking a step closer to him, and looking up at the taller penguin shyly. "Urm, do you want to...." She began. He smiled at her, and hugged her gently.
"Sure Em." He replied, running his flipper through her hair. They went over to the sleeping bag and pillow, and snuggled down in it. Luckily there was plenty of room for both of them. Kowalski lay on his back, and wrapped his flippers around Emma pulling her closer. She cuddled up to him, and rested her head on his chest, and wrapped her flippers around his neck. She closed her eyes, listening to the calming sounds of his breathing. She relaxed completely and fell asleep almost instantly. Kowalski smiled at her, and closed his eyes, falling asleep too.
A few hours later Ashley crawled out of his bunk, and looked in a mirror that was nearby. He shrieked, and instinctively ran from it, running into the periscope as he did so. Tom had to force back a laugh that tickled the back of his throat. Private went to help him up.
"Woah, I don't actually look like that do I?" He asked, looking stunned. "My head feathers have grown like a lasses." He remarked, peering into the mirror again. He looked down at his dirty, feathers, and his eyes widened. "I think I'll go for a swim." He decided, climbing the ladder.
"You don't want to do that." Kowalski told him, coming out of the lab with Emma.
"The chlorine will sting worse that actual disinfectants and water." Emma told him.
"So what can I do?" Ashley asked desperately. Kowalski went into his lab and got out a small bowl and the growth ray. He shot the bowl with the growth ray, and made it about the size of a bathtub. He then carted it into the lab and filled it with water.
"Here you go." Kowalski said, nodding towards the tub. Kowalski went out of the lab, handing him a sponge. "Oh but it will still sting." He added. "Badly." He then closed the door
"Great." Ashley muttered to himself, stepping into the tub cautiously. He let out a yowl of pain, and scrubbed at his wounds bravely. Emma winced at the sound and turned to Kowalski.
"He'll be ok," Kowalski told her, squeezing her flipper reassuringly .
"Yeah." Emma replied uncertainly. She knew he'd be ok physically, but she wasn't too sure mentally. When they first met him he was very cheerful, naive, and innocent, but she wasn't 100% sure he'd be like that now. His eyes had been opened to the horrors of the world, and that could change him into a whole different person. Meanwhile Ashley, was cleaning the blood out of his head feathers. He was quite weirded out, his hair was now nearly as long as Emma's. He finished cleaning himself, and spied a pair of scissor on the workbench. He hoped out of the tub and snipped away at the weird long feathers on his head.
I never thought I'd ever have to do this. He thought, grinning genuinely for the first time since he had been rescued. The pain was dying down a bit, and he began to feel a bit more like his normal self. He looked around for something reflective to look in. He found a large spoon and checked his head. The feathers seemed fairly even, and his wounds didn't look as bad. His left eyes was still gleaming red though. He smiled a little and limped out of the lab. With all the hassle of getting out of the lair, they hadn't actually had a chance to welcome him back yet, so all of the penguins went up to him, and gave him a hug.
"We're glad your ok Ash." Emma told him, looking a little the little penguin. Ashley beamed at them.
"I'm really grateful to you guys for saving me." He replied, feeling a little happier.
"Oh, and a few weeks ago, your mum called, so I told her that you were in he hospital, and you'd call when you got out..." Emma told him sheepishly. Ashley immediately picked up his phone, and called his mum. He smiled when he heard her voice, and he sat down in his bunk, chatting to her. He mouthed the word, 'Thanks' to Emma and focused on his mum. Emma smiled and turned the Tv on, cuddling with Kowalski as she did. She thought about Sam and Chris, and phoned them up, telling them that they had found him. They sounded happy, so Emma ended the call quickly. She hated talking on the phone. A few minutes later Ashley hung up, and sat with the others.
"So has anything happened while I was gone?" He asked, curiously.
"Otrealy." (Not really.) Rico replied, trying to sound as clear as possible, since Ashley still couldn't understand him well.
"Ah ok." Ashley replied, just about understanding what Rico said.
"Hey Ash, you're gonna need some disinfectant on those wounds." Emma told him, her eyes on the big scratch on his beak, that looked a bit like Rico's scar.
"Good point." Ashley sighed.
"Well why you two do that, we'll go out and get snowcones." Skipper announced.
"You're not going anywhere." Tom told him, sounding a little smug. This would be the first time he was probably stronger than his brother. Skipper rolled his eyes, and looked at Tom.
"Fine, but I'm ordering you to stay, and you can't watch football on the Tv." Skipper replied, sounding even more smug that Tom.
"Aww, c'mon!" Tom protested, looking frustrated. Skipper gave him a stern look, and Tom stomped off to his bunk, mumbling something under his breath. Emma tried not to smile. The others headed for the ladder, and Skipper hobbled over to his bunk.
"See you in a bit." Kowalski said, kissing Emma on the cheek, and climbing the ladder. Skipper got into his bunk, yelled goodbye, then fell asleep. Emma picked up the first aid kit that was on the floor, and she warned Ashley that it would hurt a bit.
"It's ok, it won't be as bad as what Blowhole did to me." Ashley replied, shrugging. Emma gave him a tub of the disinfectant, and she used the other one. Ashley winced a little but he got through it ok. Emma wrapped a few bandages on his flippers, and Ashley wondered if his sister would have done the same for him. He wondered, if they'd get on like Emma and Rico, never arguing, or be like Emma and Tom, find eachother annoying most of the time, but caring about eachother deep down.
"You ok?" Emma asked, noticing his distant look.
"Yes lass, I was just thinking." Ashley replied, paying more attention to Emma.
"About what?" Emma questioned, looking curious. Ashley sighed, and looked at the floor.
"You won't tell anyone will you?" he said. Emma shook her head, and Ashley looked up at her. "I....had a sister...." He began. "But she died when she was 3 before I was born." He pulled out a picture from his rucksack and handed it to Emma. "Her name was Emily." Emma looked at the picture of a sweet young girl, with black, curly hair feathers that came down to the top her her flippers, a green bow in her hair, and a matching necklace, and a light orange beak. Her eyes were the same colour as Ashley's. She was smiling brightly, next to her mum,and an egg.
"Is that you?" Emma asked pointing towards the egg. Ashley nodded sadly, and took the picture back.
"Mum said that Emily was so excited to be an older sister." Ashley told her, looking close to tears. Emma watched him sympathetically.
"How..... how did she die?" Emma asked, hoping it wouldn't make him more upset.
"She fell in the sea, and got swept away by the current." Ashley replied, his eyes filing with tears. "She wasn't much of a good swimmer, so she had no chance." He added, a few tears rolling down his cheeks. Emma hugged him comfortingly, and he let the rest of his tears out. Emma glanced over at Tom, and saw that he too, had fell asleep in his bunk. She pulled away from the little penguin, and looked at him sadly. "I just wish I got to know her before she died." He said, wistfully. Emma wasn't quite sure on what to say, she wan't so good at giving advice to someone's face. She thought about the time that one of her ancestors appeared in her dream, and what she told her.
"Hey, don't be too upset Ash, because your sister will always be watching over you." She told him comfortingly.
"Really?" He asked, wiping his tears.
"Yep, and I'm going to tell you something that I haven't told a single person, not even Kowalski." She said, making the decision in her head. She had told the team about her blood thing, and her powers, and the ancestors, but she never told them how she came to find the information.
"What's that?" Ashley wondered, his voice filling with interest.
"A sometime last year, I had a dream, and it had one of my ancestors in." Emma began. "But it wasn't just any old dream, the dream told me things about my family that I never knew, and explained a lot to me." She explained. "And at the end of this dream, my ancestor told me that when people die, they do see their family again, and they are always watching over you. Always." She finished. Ashley looked stunned, and he looked at the taller penguin.
"So, my sisters watching over me?" He asked, looking brighter. Emma nodded, and his face lit up. Emma couldn't help smiling, Ashley was so trusting, she could have told a flat out lie, and he wouldn't have noticed. But she was telling the truth to him. "You know, it's kind of weird, I never knew my sister, yet she somehow reminds me of you." Ashley reared looking thoughtful.
"Maybe it's the names?" Emma suggested. "Y'know, Emma and Emily?"
"No its more than that, it's.. I don't know, I can't explain it." Ashley replied, confused with himself. "I don't know why, but I guess I just think my sister would be like you, for some reason." He admitted.
"Really?" Emma asked, feeling a bit surprised and flattered.
"Yeah, I don't now why, but, what my mum's told me about her, she's always, smiling, cheerful, kind to others, a bit hyper, and sweet. A lot like you." Ashley told her. "This may sound like a weird question, but, urm.. could you almost, kinda be like a sister to me?" He asked uncertainly.
"Sure Ash, I think I've been treating you like a nicer little brother anyway." Emma replied, looking towards Tom, who was still asleep. Even though she hadn't known Ashley for too long, she had the feeling he'd be her friend for life, and he did remind her of Tom, and Private, which made her smile. They hugged and Ashley smiled up at Emma. "Remember though Ash, your real sister is always with you." She reminded him. Ashley nodded, and they heard a noise at the hole. The others were coming through with their snowcones. Emma got hers from Kowalski.
"Hey, Emma, why don't you tell Kowalski what you told me?" He whispered. Emma looked thoughtful and she eventually nodded.
"I don't think he'll believe me though." She admitted, giggling a bit. She was just about to turn to him when Kowalski looked at Ashley.
"Do you want to run those tests quickly?" He asked the young penguin.
"Sure lad." Ashley replied, going into the lab with Kowalski. About half an hour later, Kowalski came back with him.
"Ok, so I'd say sometimes next week, your eye will be back to normal, and your claws will be gone, and you won't have any scars that are visible on the feathers, but you will have some under the feathers." Kowalski told him. Ashley looked pleased and he finished eating his snowcone. As the day went on, and the sky blackened, the team headed for bed. Ashley got into his bunk, and smiled. He felt much happier knowing that his sister was watching him. He thought about what he was thinking just before he passed out in Blowhole's torture room, and he realised how wrong he was. The world was full of good things and people. And there was heroes out there, you just need to know who to rely on. He thought about his friends here and his family, and he fell asleep, a smile on his face as he did.
"Just let him sleep for now." He advised quietly. Emma nodded in response, and her attention turned to Skipper.
