Harry Potter Question

Another WTF of Harry Potter?

"...Ron burst out, "Can I have your autograph?"
Hermione turned away, smiling at the horseless carriages that were now trundling toward them..."

This is from GOF. Now, Harry already saw Cedric die, so why won't he realize there ARE thestrals in front of the carriages NOW instead of 2 months later?

J.K. Rowling said that Harry had not "come to terms" with Cedric's death. J.K. Rowling said that she did not want to introduce that concept so late in the book, and wanted to do it in the fifth book instead.

sure, but it's still illogical. if he never came to terms with Cedric's death, he would never see the thestrals.

She meant that at the very end of Harry's 4th year, he had not come to terms with death. It doesn't mean he had not done so during Summer. This kind of things takes time to be assimilated, you know.

Besides, in the part you quote, it's Hermione that is smiling at the horseless carriage. We may imagine that the scene is viewed from her POV, not Harry's. JKR used that kind of literary device a lot in her books, different POVs from different characters.
