No one promised that life will be easy after what had happened two months ago. Some things rose up while others fell down that gripping them within her hands seemed to be the hardest thing to do. Within that span of time, Lisa became a supermom; shielding her daughter when the news of her best friend’s paternity on her kid was intentionally spilled out by dollar-hungry reporters to the public.
Looking back at her reflection one spring day, she smiled in satisfaction and her glow was confirmed when a familiar voice sounded from her bedroom doorway.
“You think so?” she asked after turning back to face the guest that now seemed to be part of her family.
“You asked me now, you ask me tomorrow, trust me, my answer wouldn’t change,” Hugh fluently said in his sweet British accent as he began to walk to her side. Both their eyes couldn’t deny the admiration for the other one but neither would totally voice out words of deep appreciation that only JUST friends would do.
“Stop buttering me up, I already slept with you remember?” she said with a smile on her face.
“I don’t need to be reminded, that’s the reason why we’re here at the first place, right?”
“Uh-huh, which got me thinking, have Dan got Bessie all dressed up? We shouldn’t be late for things like this.”
“Lise,” he said, hand holding out for her to hold on, “stop being so panicky about this. We have this under control. Bessie’s downstairs, probably in the car with Dan and Andrei now. Let’s just get you down as well.”
With a chuckle escaping her lips and leaving a smile on it, Lisa took Hugh’s hand as the other hold her purse. “See? It wasn’t that hard isn’t?” he teased as they began making their way out of her bedroom, down the hall and finally in car.

“You okay?” Hugh asked, breaking the silence that owned the room that evening, while Lisa had her head almost on his shoulder as they were watching the evening news.
“It’s just so unreal to me,” she said before lifting her head to look into his blue eyes that are glistening because of the light coming from the TV before them. “Pinch yourself because I’m telling you, you’re not dreaming. We’re here now,” he said before a running footsteps come echoing from the hallway.
“You might want to tone down a bit on your running young lady,” he said eyeing his little Bessie as she sat beside him, holding out a paper for him to read on. “I have already read this paper, sweetie,” he said after giving a fair and brief look at the sheet before him.
“But I want you to read it again,” the little girl replied.
Hugh gave out a sigh and looked at Lisa before saying, “I, James Hugh Callum Laurie, hereby lawfully adopt Bessie Andrea Isabella Edelstein as my daughter and she shall legally likewise adopt the name Bessie Andrea Isabella Edelstein-Laurie starting on this 14th of April in the year of our Lord 2015.”
“You like that?” Lisa asked while watching her daughter drew a smile on her lips.
“I am now your daughter daddy?” Bess asked as she pulled her father for a hug.
“You’ve always been my daughter since the day you’re conceived, Bess,” Hugh answered, hugging Bessie in return.

“You sure you don’t want to come with me?” he asked as he stood before Lisa outside her home in New York.
“I packed in a letter for Jo in your bag. I figured it’ll be enough as for now since things aren’t that well ironed out yet. I just wanted to thank her for letting you come and sign the legal papers yourself,” Lisa replied with a smile.
“So, this is good-bye?”
“They are no good-byes Hugh, you know that. You can always come and see Bess whenever you wanted to but promise to make a call first so I could fix the room where you’ll stay.”
Hugh pulled her for a hug for the second time that day. He made a decision two months ago; maybe it wasn’t for his good again but it made him stable with every single day of his life. He chose Jo and their children, in return, she allowed him to fly back to New York every now and then to meet up with Bess and spend time with her and that includes legally adopting his daughter.
His decision obviously caused Lisa heartache but that’s just what life is, we can’t always get what we want but often times, we get what we need. She didn’t get what she WANTED, but she got what she NEEDS, a peaceful worry-free nights and a father for her child.
