Chapter 24: Not what I was seeking for

Four years later

“Come out, come out wherever you are” Hugh said loudly, while he was searching the house.
Hannah and Annabelle had hid a bit before and now he was suppose to find them. It was the umpteenth time they'd hid and Hugh had been starting to wonder why on earth was it so difficult to catch up with his two little angels.
A pain went through his back and he, of course, realized why he was feeling so tired.
He was old.
He was fifty seven years old and looking like it. His hair had started growing gray a while before. The few strands that he had left, that was.
Oh, he wasn't bald, but he sure thought of wearing a tuppe a lot more than he ever did.
And he knew, why all of sudden he had a need to feel younger, to look younger.
It was because of his two little angels that were currently hiding in some remote place in the house.
He wanted to stay young for them, and ... for himself. He was not feeling too great when he had to go to pick the twins up at the kindergarten and have all those other parents almost gloating how young they were.
And ironically, they were all movie or TV stars. Yes, Lisa had to put the twins to the most prestige kindergarten in the whole Hollywood. She went to school with Mia Alexis, Vanessa Hudgens and Zack Effron's kid, as well as Ana Victoria, Angie and Brad's seventh kid.

Kids...
Hugh smirked. His other kids were all grown up and living on their own. Charles had gotten married a few months before, to a wonderful girl named Hillary. However, there was something about that girl that made Hugh think she was a nut job. And, frankly, she was Charlie's other half. In addition to that, she just loved Annabelle and Hannah, although she never admitted.

Billy... Billy had stayed the party monster he'd always been. The yellow pages were full of his latest night club parties and hot girls. Hugh had no idea where in bloody hell his kid got it from. It certainly wasn't him, and definitely not Jo.

The only other choice was his wife. She sure knew how to party when she was younger, and the parties weren't strange to her now as well.
When he thought of it, it indeed was his wife who encouraged Billy to party his but off.
Becca had... finished college and currently traveling. God only knew where she'd gone. The last postcard he got had been from India. She'd sent some pictures as well. He recalled the one in which she was sitting on an elephant going through a muddy 'river'.
Hugh had never wanted her to leave. He'd never wanted anyone of them to leave, but they had.
They had and he could have done nothing about it but to accept they'd grown up.
It was then, that he was really glad he still had the twins, and no matter how old he felt, he was going to play hide and seek with them, as long as they possibly wanted.

Hugh rounded the corner, where the hallway closet was and quickly opened it.
There was no one in there.
He heard some noises coming from upstairs, but as he approached the staircase, he remembered his wife had gone to the master bedroom a half an hour before, just at the time they'd finished lunch and the twins had begged Hugh to play with them.

His wife... Hugh's smirk suddenly faded.
His wife... was so absent. All the time. It was so painful and daunting.
And he knew he had to live with it.
His wife.... Hugh took in a deep breath. In the back of his mind... he'd almost forgotten her name.
He always referred to her as his wife... He didn't know why was it, but in his head... there was only his wife. There was no Lisa...
The Lisa he knew... was somehow absent...
His wife,
was still there.

Ever since he'd come back from England, the time he had gotten cold feet and fled the country, ever since he'd come back home, nothing was the same between them.
He still loved her, and, she, obviously loved him. There was no question about it.
But the way they acted around each other, the way she acted on her own, was... peculiar.
And that peculiar state of their relationship adopted as a normal through the years.
They'd learnt to live like that. They'd learnt to accept that, no matter how much they loved each other, nothing was going to enable them to overcome the huge gap there was between them.
The gap that kept them at the end of their nerves, at suspense.
The gap connected with narrow strains of love, passion and the love for all the kids they had.
The gap that lacked joy they had once been proud of.

The fact that he had been responsible for its lost, scarred him for life.

Hugh walked cautiously down the hallway and suddenly stopped as he heard a soft giggling coming from somewhere near the staircase. He looked around only to find no possible place for the twins to hide. He listened to the giggling again and realized, it could only come from beneath the stairs.
And then, he spotted it.
He spotted the small door that he, surprisingly, never saw before. The small door that led to the
area below the stairs. The area that was home to Harry Potter in his cousin's house, back in the first part of the Harry Potter saga.
He approached the little door slowly and cautiously opened them.
What he found there both amazed and confused him.
His twins, Hannah and Annabelle had, obviously, found some old house appliances down there, which, only god knew why, had been left in there.
The twins were looking at something picture shaped with a mild frown, suddenly giggling as they saw their dad bent so he could peak in their hiding place.
“Daddy?” Hannah and Annabelle asked in the same time, Hugh, at the times like these, wondering how on earth he managed to tell them apart.
“What is it?” Hugh frowned as well, glancing at the few newspapers scattered around where his daughter's where sitting.
“Don't be mad at mommy, daddy” Hannah said, her voice filled with unexpected fright, handing the picture she and Hannah where looking at to Hugh.

As soon as Hugh glanced at the picture in his hand, his forehead cover in sweat.
The small room started spinning a little, his heart pounding.
He couldn't believe what he saw. He couldn't believe that the woman he knew, the woman he loved with all his heart and soul, was in that picture he was, unconsciously starting to grip.
The woman that formed an invisible gap between her and Hugh, had built it for the completely other reason than Hugh thought she had.
Everything that he believed in... all these years, everything that he blamed himself for... was invalid.
It was all brought to question because she'd...
Hugh looked at the picture in his hand... His wife... and her … obstetrician.
Hugh started to feel sick.
His wife... had cheated.

Feedback is welcome, as always :))))
Tell me what you think, and what you expect in epilogue.

“Lisa!” Hugh gasped, putting his hands on her waist and pulling back even as the sounds of cameras being reset and the directors calling for them began to float over from behind the wall. “Ok. Do not do that again.” Her eyes were shocked as she looked at him. “I’m serious. Unless you want me to haul you over my shoulder and take you back to my trailer, whether people are watching or not… stop it.”
Lisa blinked slowly at him and then smiled flirtatiously, grabbing his arm and pushing him back out toward the hallway. “Come on, Hugh....

The clatter of dice against a felt-lined board startled Lisa out of her script reading, and she rolled her eyes, leaning back in her chair and letting her head fall back as far as it would. “Boys! Some people are trying to concentrate over here!”
“Apologies, your highness,” Hugh shot back, not even turning around to face her. Greg was eyeing the board suspiciously.
“Are you very sure that last move was legal?”
“We’re playing British rules, are we not?” Hugh tried, and Greg burst out...

Ok, I know I know it's been quite a while... couldn't decide where I was going with it, didn't want to force it... meh. Anyway, on with the show!

~*~*~
Total avoidance. Yes. That was the way to go. To-tal. Toooooooooooooooooooootal… avoidance.
She could say it twelve other ways too, if anyone cared to ask. It had become her mantra over the past week or so. Totally tubular avoidance. That wasn’t one of her better ones. That’s right, Lisa. You just march your little self right past his trailer. Is he in there?
    Do we care?...
