Leopardstar lay on her side, too weary to get up. Time was always on her hands. Mistyflower and Honeypaw were doing all they can, but it none of the herbs were working. Leopardstar was getting weaker and weaker...just sleep she told herself. You'll feel better once you've rested.... Rest! Like she wasn't resting?! All she could ever do was lie around anymore. Well that was to end soon. She'd get better, she had too. I thought that I was given strength when I got my nine lives. Did SpiritClan lie?... No. SpiritClan didn't lie.
Suddenly, a white light flashed before her eyes and the forest as she knew it melted away to something completely different. Leopardstar felt the breath coarse from her as she looked around SpiritClan hunting grounds. What is happening to me? she thought.
Before her were the nine cats who had given her her lives, in the correct order.
1. Quailfeather--her mentor.
2. Rainspots--her first apprentice.
3. Sandpool--her mother.
4. Frogheart--the cat she had thought was her father.
5. Pinefur--the medicine cat before Fernpool.
6. Brownfeather--her real father.
8. Falconleaf--her mate.
9. Redsoul--the leader before her.
The cats of SpiritClan surrounded them and they were all watching her. Leopardstar stared at all of them. "Mom," cried out for Sandpool. "What is going on?"
It was Quailfeather who answered. "You're loosing your first life, Leopardstar."
Leopardstar stared at them in horror. "Loosing a life?" she asked stupidly.
"Yes," said Quailfeather again. "Your first life."
Leopardstar felt numb with horror. The greencough was killing her! No matter the strength SpiritClan gave her, no matter the herbs Mistyflower and Honeypaw gave her, they were loosing the battle.
This time her mother spoke. "Just because you loose a battle does not mean you loose the war." Leopardstar looked up at Sandpool. She wanted to run up to her mother and press against her. She wanted her mother's warmth again.
She looked at them. "I still have eight lives." All of them nodded. She sighed. "I will loose them all eventually, too, right?" Again they nodded. She nodded with them. "I will be a part of SpiritClan as I am now?" The nodded. Finally, Frogheart and Pinefur parted to reveal a new cat. At first Leopardstar thought it was a trick of the light, but then she realized she was seeing a pale copy of herself, sick, riddled with greencough. Her fur was matted and her eyes were tortured. Leopardstar gasped in shock. She hadn't realized how bad she looked.
Pinefur wisely said, "You will always be with SpiritClan, even in the physical world of IvyClan."
"All cats are with SpiritClan," put in Falconleaf.
Then a new voice spoke. Not one, but the collective voice of SpiritClan.
"Leopardstar, your body is healed enough to live on. You are now capable of returning to IvyClan. All wounds heal. You have eight of your nine lives remaining. Use them wisely..."
Leopardstar snapped awake in her den beneath the Speakledge. Mistyflower and Honeypaw were hovering over her.
"Leopardstar!" exclaimed Honeypaw in relief. "You're awake. Mistyflower, what happened?"
Mistyflower stared at Leopardstar in dismal relief. "She lost a life," she told Honeypaw. "Don't worry, she'll get better now."
Honeypaw nodded slowly. "I'm going to tell the Clan she's all right." Dipping her head, the medicine cat apprentice backed out of the den.
"Did you see SpiritClan?" asked Mistyflower. Leopardstar nodded. "What did they say."
"They said," Leopardstar said as she caught her breath. "That every cat is a member of SpiritClan."
Mistyflower took a deep breath. "How so? Is it another prophecy?"
Leopardstar shook her head slowly. "No. In fact, it has given me hope. I may have lost a life, but I have eight left. Just as I will, we will grow strong again. And not just IvyClan. All the Clans live together around Foursquare. Whatever is going to happen is going to affect all of us."
Mistyflower stared at her through narrowed eyes. "Are you sure you're all right, Leopardstar. I think you need rest."
Leopardstar felt shocked. How could her medicine cat not feel it. "I'm more than all right, I'm perfect! We're perfect!" She looked out of the draping ferns to where cats were sighing in relief at Honeypaw's news. "Everyone is. Mistyflower, if I learned anything while with SpiritClan, it's this: There are tough times ahead, and though this is only the beginning, there has got to be an ending."
