Apart from their love for the game of basketball, it seems Lucas and Nathan are two young men, with very little in common, but they are bound together by the dark secret that they share a father. Nathan is the star of Tree Hill's Raven's and a local town hero, while Lucas is the son of single mom, Karen.
But the two boys world's collide when Lucas is put on the Raven's basketball team, and the half-brothers compete, not only for control of the court, but for the heart of Nathan's girlfriend, Peyton.

The episode starts with the Raven's playing an important basketball game. The Raven's win with thanks to the team's star, Nathan Scott. Elsewhere, Nathan's half-brother, Lucas, is playing a game of basketball with three friends down at the rivercourt. Nathan and Lucas share the same father. It is said that their father, Dan Scott, left Karen, when she fell pregnant with Lucas, but when Deb fell pregnant with Nathan, he stayed and married her, raising Nathan. After the game, the basketball team hijack one of the school buses, but are busted by the police. Although Nathan was driving, Dan manages to bail him out of trouble, while most of his team mates are suspended.

During a drive, cheerleader Peyton Sawyer, also Nathan's Girlfriend, almost runs down Lucas after being distracted, trying to find a CD.

After almost being run over, Lucas returns home to have dinner with his mom and best friend, Haley James.

The next day, Lucas' uncle, Keith, asks Coach Whitey Durham if Lucas could be a part of the Raven's team. Keith is positive Lucas deserves the opportunity.

After watching Lucas at the river court, Whitey decides to put him on the team. Nathan is livid, and challenges Lucas to a one-on-one basketball game, loser walking away from the team.

Peyton's car breaks down at the side of the road, and Lucas is called to fix it. During a discussion, Lucas tells Peyton about his past with Dan and Nathan. Stunned Peyton then accepts Lucas' proposal of a ride home.

Lucas then shows up at Keith's shop, and at that time Dan is talking to Keith about Karen. Following this, Lucas makes his mind up about the basketball game against Nathan. He decides to accept.

Lucas then wins the match against Nathan, and after all the cheering and clapping, Lucas informs Peyton that Nathan will stay on the team because "it's the last thing he wants".

In the final scene, it shows Lucas entering the gym, with everyone staring at him. A last close-up of the rivercourt, finally empty, is shown at the end.
