"Hey, future drivers!" Paul and Hank's father approached them after dinner that night, jingling the car keys in his hands. "Who wants to come along and do a little practising?"
Paul, who had been reading a music magazine on the couch, and Hank, who had been watching a movie with a lot of explosions on the TV nearby, both sat up. "I do!"
Soon, the three of them sat in the car in a mostly empty parking lot. "Who's going first?" their dad asked.
"Let Paul go first." This answer surprised Paul. Normally his brother was more than eager to be first at everything.
"You feeling okay, buddy?" Their father was only half-teasing as he looked back at Hank with some concern. "Okay, then. Up you come, Paul, into the driver's seat."
Paul's hands were tense as he took the wheel, his father in the passenger side and Hank still in the back. He felt his fingers moving almost without his being aware of it as his father showed him how to turn the key.
And then Paul was driving. The car glided forward across the parking lot, sometimes too fast or too slow, his father occasionally pointing out something he had forgotten. Mostly, there was nothing but him and the car, and soon Paul fell into a rhythm, almost sensing what the car needed from him next.
Eventually, his father directed him into a parking spot, and while Paul came a little close to the lines on one side, and the car was just a little crooked, he managed to park the car. "Nice job, Paul," his father said.
"Yeah, you were great." Hank sounded a little distracted.
"Well, Hank?" their father prompted. "Ready to become the world's other best driver?"
His words were playful, but Paul couldn't help but notice Hank looked a little pale as they switched places.
As soon as Hank started driving, Paul could feel the difference. Hank spent almost a full two minutes adjusting the mirrors and seat before he even got going, even though Paul had been driving last and he and Hank were exactly the same height. Once he got going, he paused for a full second or three before every turn, before doing almost anything. His hands were tight on the wheel, his face tense with concentration. The car crept along in a fit of stops and starts.
"Uh, Hank," Paul ventured, "maybe you should try...."
Hank's eyes never left the windshield. "Don't bother me, Paul. I'm driving."
"You need to go a little faster than that, buddy," their father advised. "If you go that slow on the road, it's as bad as driving too fast."
Hanks's shoulders tensed. "I know what I'm doing, Dad."
Hank finished his turn by taking three minutes to finally ease the car into a parking space, where he pulled it in so cautiously it ended up sticking out too far into the roadway. Hank muttered to himself, tried to fix it, and ended up sticking halfway into the space behind him.
Paul didn't know what to say. He mostly wanted to say something helpful, but he doubted even that would be received well.
"Well," Paul and Hank's father said at last, breaking the silence, "that was a good practise round, you two. I'm sure your driving instructor will help you with whatever else you need to learn."
He tactfully didn't direct this any more at Hank than at Paul.
All the way home, Hank said nothing. But Paul noticed him sweating as he scrutinized every move their father made while driving the car.

"Una! Where are you?!" Everett had been searching for Una for what seemed like hours. The wind almost knocked him over several times. Still, he wasn't about to give up. He had to find Una. Everett had not eaten since breakfast. Although he had plenty of food to eat, he couldn't eat a thing. He was too worried about Una. She hadn't dressed as warmly as he did. If he didn't find her soon, she'd be done for. Soon, the snow stopped, much to his relief. Finding Una would be easier now. It was getting dark. Everett reached for his flashlight and turned it on. It was so bright, he could see everything....

The wind and the snow were bitterly cold. Una didn't know how long she had been out there, with no shelter and very little to keep her warm. Her shoes were soaked through, she could hardly feel her toes, and her fingers were frozen stiff. She could feel tear tracks hardened on her face as the wind stung her cheeks.
She had to do something to stay warm. She'd tried to keep moving, something telling her that to stop and rest in this weather could be fatal. But she was exhausted, each step more and more of a struggle as the snow rose higher and higher. And who knew where she was going, if she was...

The snowfall began to get heavier and heavier. Una and Everett tried to stay together, but the blizzard kept blinding them. Without realizing it, they became separated. Although the snow was blinding, there was no shelter. The young couple knew they had to get back to civilization and find a warm place. They pressed on for what seemed like hours. Finally, Everett saw a familiar sight. It was the town near the mountains. The hotel where he and Una were staying was in sight. Everett breathed a sigh of relief. He exclaimed, "We made it, Una! We made it!" There was no response. "Una," he called...

"Everett, watch this!" Una leaped off the hiking trail and slid gracefully into the light snow covering the ground on either side, kicking up a light spray.
He laughed. "Careful there, Una."
"Aren't I always?" She grinned at him teasingly before tossing a handful of snow up in the air. "I love this. It's so beautiful up here." She sighed. "My family never really took vacations like this."
"Well, we can take lots," Everett replied without thinking. Wait, what had he said?? He and Una were officially together now, yes, but they hadn't talked at all about how "serious" they were, whether they was...

It had been nine months since Una and Everett first met. Though they didn't really need a break from anything at this point, with the both of them pursuing their dreams, they decided to go on a winter trip near the mountains. That morning, Mrs. Stratton had fixed a hearty breakfast for Una. Mrs. Stratton asked, "Are you excited for your trip, dear?" Una said, "You bet! I've never been so close to the mountains before. I can't wait to go hiking in the snow." Mrs. Stratton said, "You be careful when you go. I've heard it can be very cold there." Una said, "Don't worry, Mother. I won't be going...

Hi, everyone. Antonia here, and today, I am sharing some exciting news! My second Gerberian Shepsky, Joplin is no longer a little pup. She is one year old.

That's right. Joplin turned one today (November 12). It seems like just yesterday when I brought her home. She was just an eight-week-old puppy. She is now a young adult. Basically, she's a teenager. Joplin was a bit of a handful when she was younger. She's still a handful to an extent, but she is calmer than she was when I first got her.

Joplin still gets into things, but not like she used to. She still gnaws on things, but she's much more...

Hi, everyone! Antonia here, and I found this Q&A list while looking around the Internet. I know everyone loves doing these. I'll start, and I'll include the link so that you can try it yourselves. You don't have to answer the same questions I did. Without further ado, let's get started, shall we?

1. What is your favorite memory of your childhood friends? I have so many great memories. If I had to pick one, though, I'd have to pick the time that Paul (RocknRollSoul60) and I met Jan (60smusicluv) for the first time when we shielded her from some bullies.

2. What is your favorite junk food?...

A few days later, Everett came to see Una again. He came just as she and her mother were finishing breakfast, and Mrs. Stratton smiled to see how quickly Una jumped from her seat and ran to let him in.
“Everett!” She beamed. His blue eyes lit up at her reaction to seeing him, and he reached out as if to pull her into a hug, then stopped as if wondering if that was too much right now. Una grinned and wrapped one arm around his shoulders in response. “Come in! We still have some pancakes if you want some – I'd take one, Mom makes really good ones – how are you??”
“Great,” he told...

As Mrs. Stratton, Una, and Everett sipped their tea, they talked quite a bit. Mrs. Stratton asked Everett about his chosen career path. He told her about his passion for film editing. She listened intently. She began to rethink Una's passion for acting. Mrs. Stratton then asked Una, "Is acting what you really want?" Una said, "Yes, Mother, it's all I've ever wanted to do." Mrs. Stratton said, "If this is what you really want, I promise not to stand in the way of your dreams." Una said, "Well, one of my dreams is to keep seeing Everett." Everett blushed. Mrs. Stratton said, "I think that's wonderful....

Una might have been nervous about coming home after her fight with her mother, about what she would say to her mother and what her mother would say to her once they saw each other in person, about whether she would be able to pursue her dreams again or if things would just go right back to how they were before. But it was just so hard to worry about anything when Everett was there beside her. He was so steady and reassuring, and there was just so much to talk about with him around. They talked more about movies and about all sorts of other things, too. (It turned out they liked almost the same...

"Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be an actress. I always dreamed of the day when my name would be in lights, and I would be starring in big films. In school, I participated in every school play, except for the time I had the flu, but that's another story. My father always supported me, and he regularly encouraged me to pursue acting. He would even playfully ask for my autograph. My mother never encouraged me to pursue acting. She wants me to go to college, even though going to college doesn't guarantee I'll get a job. Unfortunately, my father was taken suddenly when we went out...

An hour or so into her walk, Una was beginning to regret her decision. It was hot, her feet hurt, she was thirsty and hungry and tired of carrying her bag all this way, and she was fairly certain she'd greatly misjudged the distance between here and Hollywood.
A fleeting thought crossed her mind – her mother had tried to contact her. She could call her mother to come and pick her up... or even to give her a lift the rest of the way... No. Una shook her head firmly to drive the thought from her mind. Her mother would never agree to drive her to Hollywood. Una didn't need her mother's help,...

When Mrs. Stratton managed to pick herself up off the couch, she attempted to get herself together. She needed to find Una. Mrs. Stratton knew that calling the town cops would be a waste of time. After all, Una was eighteen, and even though she left without telling anyone, in their books, it did not count as running away. Mrs. Stratton looked to see if Una's cellphone was gone too. It was. With a heavy sigh, Mrs. Stratton attempted to call her daughter. There was no answer. It went straight to voicemail, which meant that Una had turned off her phone. Mrs. Stratton's heart sank. Una must've...

Mrs. Stratton woke up early the next morning. She had been tossing and turning all night, unable to sleep. She couldn't stop thinking about her fight with Una.
She hadn't meant to upset her daughter. She had only wanted to make sure Una had a stable, secure future, to make sure Una did what was best for herself. Una had ambition and confidence, and Mrs. Stratton admired that. But, Mrs. Stratton thought, Una was too young to see how the real world worked. She still lived with her head in the clouds. Mrs. Stratton couldn't let her daughter reach for something unattainable only to come crashing...

One day, when Una came home from school, her mother asked, "Did you have a good day, dear?" Una said, "Yes, Mother. Everyone loved my speech in my public speaking class." Mrs. Stratton said, "That's nice." After a pause, she said, "Today was the deadline to apply for college. Have you done that?" Una replied, "No, Mother." Mrs Stratton was enraged upon hearing this. "Why not? Una, you need to secure your future. How do you think I got my job as an accountant?!" Una said, "Mother, I don't want a boring desk job. I want to entertain people. I want to see my name in lights." Mrs. Stratton said,...

Ever since she could remember, Una Stratton had loved to act, and she had loved to have an audience.
She was the first to volunteer to read anything aloud or speak in front of the class in school, and she was well known there for her loud, clear, confident voice. She would make big, sweeping gestures as she did, and made sure to emote even if she was reading a textbook page. She loved to pretend she was the main character in her favourite books and movies and TV shows, and she would set up her stuffed animals to represent the other roles for her, or later enlist some friends to round out the...

Hi, everyone. Antonia here, and I found these summer tag questions. Since the unofficial end of summer is approaching, I thought it would be appropriate to do this questionnaire. Feel free to do this yourself.

1. Are you a summer person? Definitely!

2. What is your favorite thing about the summer? My favorite thing is the longer daylight hours. I wish Daylight Savings Time would never end.

3. Do you stay indoors or outdoors more in the summer? It's an equal amount of both.

4. What is your favorite ice cream flavor? It used to be strawberry, but now it is Ben & Jerry's Peanut Butter Half Baked....

Uncle Bruce was waiting up for Anjanette when she got home later that night. "I saw your appearance on TV, Anjanette. You did well."
Anjanette blushed with pleasure. It made her feel better to know that one of the many, many people who had seen her up there was her uncle, someone who was rooting for her no matter what. "Thanks, Uncle Bruce. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be."
Uncle Bruce nodded knowingly. "Yes. I know you were scared, but you came through for your friends anyway. I'm proud of you."
Anjanette beamed. "I'm glad it all worked out for them. Now Les and Jimmy can just be friends...

Noticing that Anjanette was about to fall off the stage, Ferdinand rushed to her aid. He managed to catch her before her head could hit the floor. With Becky's help, he managed to pull his best friend to safety. Anjanette looked around and saw her friends looking concerned. Ferdinand asked, "Are you okay?" She was too shaken up to answer him. Becky said, "Come on, Anjanette. Talk to us." Anjanette took a deep breath. She said, "Yeah, I'm okay." Ferdinand gave her a hug. The audience cheered. Becky said, "You see, everyone, Ferdinand was only concerned about Anjanette. They're best friends....
