"Until we were ready..." Therion echoes, then stretches and rubs his neck. "This is a lot to have to be ready for. And there's something I don't understand." He looks around at the gathered Silhouettes. "You've said that you came here a thousand years ago, but--" there is soft laughter and guilty glances around the study, and the answer comes from behind them. "That is because we still count the passage of time in our years. In yours," Bea chuckles softly as she takes Malfoy into her arms in a loving embrace, and Therion shakes his head. "I don't think I want to know what the conversion is...I don't think I could get my mind around it." Bea releases Malfoy, then places a hand on Perdurabo's arm as she moves passed him to embrace Snape.

It is so good to be in her arms again. Her warmth and comfort, so like a mother's, gives him strength and encouragement. She would take them all into her arms at once, if she could, she loves them so. Elsbet looks up at Therion. "What is time, really? Elrond was three thousand years old when Isildur cut the One Ring from Sauron's hand. How many generations separated Isildur and Aragorn? How long had the One Ring lay in wait, until Sméagol acquired it? A thousand years? More? So...what is time?" Bea gently strokes Elsbet's hair, smiling down at her. "There's something I don't understand," Layne says quietly, "why didn't my parchment tell me about Uriel?" Perdurabo sighs and looks at him apologetically. "A full blood scrivening would have, but Theobald was never properly trained in the art. His results are accurate, one hundred percent, however, they don't tell you everything your blood knows."

Remus rises stiffly and takes the tea offered to him, and gives a cup to Tonks. He notes the way the Silhouettes look at her, with wistful little smiles and misty eyes, and while he's curious, there are other things demanding his attention. "So, when the parchment says something is 'lost to genetic memory', it's just that it can not fully interpret the information?" Amadeus nods. "Yes, exactly. The information is out there. Or," he grins, "in here," he indicates the trunk on the table, full of scrolls. Elsbet, clearly deep in thought, sits down on the floor and rubs her knees for a moment, then asks Perdurabo when he received the Orthanc-stone. He gazes at her for some time before answering.

"On the day you were born, my dear one." He looks away from her for a moment, then up at Snape. He wants to say something to him, something profound, but he refrains. Now is not the time nor place to bring her up. Shiver can see a dozen different questions swimming in Elsbet's eyes and knows she wants to asks them all at once. "I wish we could find the other stones," she says, innocently. "I mean, other than the Stone of Emyn Beraid, that one is beyond us. But the others...the ones that were lost..." Something seems to race through the study, like the zing of excitement, and Therion finds his heart racing. "What?" He looks around at the Silhouettes and at Perdurabo. "Do you know where they are?" Layne asks, and the Old Man nods impishly. "Two of them, anyway."

Elsbet seems jolted suddenly and springs back up onto her knees, her face bright and eyes shining. "Where are they? Which ones? How did you find them? Can we--" Perdurabo laughs, as do Bea and Capadocius, and Snape helps her rise then pulls her into his arms to calm her. "We have the Master Stone, and the Stone of Amon Sûl," Perdurabo says, "but the Stone of Annúminas is still lost." Capadocius looks up at the ceiling of the study and seems to be chewing her words. "Well," says she, "not still lost, really, more like...lost again." The Old Man closes his eyes for a moment and suppresses a reply, and after a brief but intense silence, Snape's family begin asking questions. All except Snape, who seems as though his mind has suddenly wandered.

Perdurabo lets them chatter, but Bea hushes them and says, "one question at a time, and I think I can answer them all without you asking them." All eyes but Snape's turn to her, and once she has their attention, she tells them, "long before the city was founded, before it became a Sanctuary, this was a small haven. There were still intelligent Dragons in Middle-earth then, and those that had defied Sauron and survived the War of the Ring had settled in this area. There was one great old Dragon of whom the Elves were very fond, by the name of Escellion. She was ancient and incredibly wise; she knew what the stones were, even knew them each by name. She knew things that no other dragon did, and none could say why. She passed the knowledge on to her chicks, and it was because she had the wisdom to do so that the haven was saved."

Bea pauses as food is brought out and eagerly shared, and more tea is served. As everyone, Snape included, settles back down into their seats, Bea continues the tale. "One day, as the legend goes, her twin daughters--they hatched from the same egg--were out hunting together when they sighted armed warriors approaching the haven. They knew from what their mother had taught them that their home was in terrible danger; the men were Haradrim." Therion coughs at the mention of the name and nearly chokes on his fish. Layne pats him hard on the back as Malfoy reaches over to him. The bookmaster shakes his head and, still coughing, says, "Gods, not the Oliphaunt-riders..." Bea nods, and once he has recovered himself, she says, "indeed. The very same. Fortunately, by that time there were few of those monsters left, but the Haradrim were just as deadly on foot."

Snape notes that Perdurabo does not eat, though he clearly wishes to, and so concerned is he that he finds it difficult to concentrate on the story. Bea touches him gently, rests her hand on his shoulder, and Snape sighs deeply as she goes on. "The twins turned back toward home and their cries alerted their older brother, Incundus, who met them at the southern boundary of the haven. Incundus was extremely protective of his sisters and his mother; the twins were little more than hatchlings when their father was slain by Easterlings searching for riches to plunder. He remembered how his father had suffered before he died and how terribly his mother had grieved. He put himself between his sisters and the Haradrim and tried to fend the intruders off alone, but he wasn't alone long. His sisters had gone to their mother, and within minutes the Elves who tended the haven came to his aid."

More tea is brought out and the family considers what they've learned thus far. Therion still can't fathom the span of time, and Remus nudges him teasingly. "The confrontation quickly became a battle," Bea continues, "and the Haradrim drove them back to the haven. Escellion was prepared, however, and she met them head-on with flame and claw. Together they drove the Haradrim back, but her ferocity only convinced them she was guarding some treasure. During a lull in the fighting the Elves discovered Escellion had been wounded. While tending to her, she told them that she carried three stones of great value in a pouch in her throat, and it was the stones the Haradrim wanted, but they must never possess them. Incundus kept his sisters from the sight of their injured mother, but when she coughed up one of the stones he snatched it up and swallowed it before it could roll away."

Elsbet sniffles and wipes her eyes, looks around at her family, then up at Bea. "I know this story," she says, "my father told my brother and me when I was very little...Incundus asked the Elves to watch over his mother and sisters, then drew the Haradrim away from the haven by pretending to be hurt. He took wing, drawing them ever deeper into the woods, but the Elves had allies in those woods and the Haradrim didn't get far." Bea nods and asks her if she remembers the rest of the story, and the Elf maiden winces. "No," she sighs, "not really. I wish I could...I think he said that Escellion had to go underground to sleep and heal, and her daughters were hidden away deep inside the haven." Malfoy and Snape both rub her back and Malfoy kisses her sweetly.

"That is exactly right, Ellie. When she took to her chamber she made a vow that while she slept her magic would protect the haven and all within it, and she never broke that vow. Not even..." the Great Mother takes in a deep breath, "after she died." Snape's family looks around at each other, and Snape notices the other Silhouettes have receded back into the darkness. Perdurabo appears to be sleeping, but Snape knows he's wide awake. Something is happening somewhere in the City... "Escellion died, never seeing her children again?" Tonks asks, suddenly weepy, and Bea says softly, "yes, much to the sorrow of all. Lira and Lute holed themselves up in a cavern beneath a mountain, and Incundus never returned. And wherever he is, the Stone of Annúminas is with him still."

Remus, puzzled, comforts his wife, and Therion and Layne push around the empty plate that had held the delicious sandwiches. The rim of the plate is scalloped, and the decorative pattern along the edge of it...Layne runs his finger along the smooth edge, then looks at Therion...it is a Dragon, in a circle, its tail tickling its snout. Snape stretches and pulls the plate towards him and Therion fidgets in his chair. "Bea," he says, "where...where is Escellion's chamber?" Bea's eyes glint and she smiles. "Beneath us." Layne looks from the plate to Bea and says, "the great Dragon's bones are beneath us?" Perdurabo says almost sleepily, not opening his eyes, "yes, and so is the Master Stone."

Ok, some of the feathered folk of the White City. The little symbol that appears with each bird's name is that bird's sigil; if for some reason their name needs to be put to paper, their sigil is drawn instead.

Alphion, clutch-brother of Cambion; he is not presently attatched to any Magical, but acts totally of his own accord. He is loud, very friendly, and very passionate about fighting the Dark Lord.

Anubis is a Hooded Crow, brought from Egypt but ultimately not purchased by the Magical who had requested him. The merchant, whose shop was in the Muggle village outside of the White...

With Loki tucked safely into a pocket made specially for the little raven just inside his travelling cloak, he slips out of this new happy home. He is content with the knowledge that he has them both together, and they're both safe; worrying about Elsbet was stressful enough, but Malfoy at the 'mercy' of the Dark Lord was just too much. It's a cool night here, and the air is filled with the soft chirruping of crickets. Nice night for a walk. He makes his way to the Park District, his thoughts racing. He makes no effort to slow them, to bring his heart and mind back into line and under his tight...

Therion wipes his eyes as the images, thoughts and feelings flow to him. He's never experienced Legilimency in such a deep, profound way, and he doesn't know how to repay Snape for the kindness and trust he's showing him by sharing this.

'Dey mind you of love...' Loki looks back down at the pretty objects, then gently nips Snape's chin. 'Love is good,' he thinks, and Snape enfolds the little raven in his embrace, his body trembling. "Yes," he whispers, "love is good."

Once he has calmed himself, which takes some time, he places Loki back on his bed and then places the beads and the ring back...

I've been doing some re-reading and I've realized a couple of adjustments are in line. When I first mentioned the White City, I had no idea it was going to become what it has, and now that is has...er...become...you know... :p There's a deatil or two that don't make any sense now, so I've fixed them.

They be:

"The Sensei says that there is an increase in activity of Dark creatures in and around the city. So far there have been no direct attacks on anyone, though there are reports of people's pets going missing. That's not surprising, considering three werewolves were sighted...

As Snape passes through the little window into the guestroom, he begins his shiftback, and when he lands, he realizes that Therion is gone. Malfoy and Elsbet are still wrapped up together, but now they're covered securely with the blanket. It's a very touching sight, but...he's disappointed. Was it too much for Therion? Was it not what he expected? Did he feel he was somehow being disloyal to his lost lover? Group sex and open relationships aren't for everyone, Snape is well aware of that; he never imagined it would be for himself, but now that it's happened for him, he wouldn't have it any...

By the time Snape makes it to the White City, Loki is healed totally and with Malfoy, back in Therion's shop. Snape finds the back reading room full of people, some of whom he's not seen in quite some time, and some he's never met. All he cares about is his Familiar and his lovers, a hot meal and a good long fuck, but there is protocol to be observed. As a path is cleared for him, he is struck by a wave of relief; Andromeda Tonks is safe, and seated between Remus and her daughter. As soon as she sees Snape, she rises and thanks him, and tells him that she can't believe everything that's happened...

Snape's morning began with him getting Neville and Luna out to Hagrid's first thing, before the Carrows even awoke. "Make certain this takes all day. I do not wish to see these two back in the castle until the end of classes today," he told Hagrid, then looked down at the two students he's come to respect, though he'll probably never admit it to anyone. "Mr. Longbottom," Snape had said quietly, "do attempt to return in one piece." With a raised brow and slight smirk he'd left them then, and turned back toward the castle. He'd not taken but a few steps before he heard Luna say happily, "Oh,...

Just for us...

Malfoy pulls Snape to him and slides his free hand down to the Dark wizard's pants. He plays with the top button and Snape smiles wickedly, saying, "so eager, Lucius...shall I make you work for it? Or, shall I be merciful and give it to you?" Malfoy's eyes flick downwards, then back up to Snape's, and an impish grin speads across his lips. "Well, it seems to me my King, that you're just as eager as I," he says, and Snape turns his head slightly away from his lover. He tells him, "that may be, my gentle healer, but you know I can restrain myself," and Malfoy lets his fingers graze...

"Severus," Malfoy whispers, "what is going to happen to me tonight?" Snape takes his arm and leads him out of the room, where Therion is waiting for them, half-way to the door at the end of the hallway. "You're going to face once of the greatest challenges of your life." Malfoy sighs. "You can't be any more specific than that, can you?" There is a humorous tone in his voice, but the other wizards know what trepidation he's feeling. As they reach the door, Malfoy asks, "what happens if I fail?" For a moment, no one answers. "Don't think of failure, Lucius," Remus says without looking at him,...

Snape becomes a blur of motion; before Therion draws his next breath he sees the ebony-clad wizard become a raven once more and dart off in the direction of the Lake District. Not a moment later, Malfoy emerges from Irena's shop wearing a surprisingly humble grey suit, with a matching grey robe. "Where is Severus?" He sounds quite dejected, but relaxes when Therion tells him, "he's just checking on Ellie, he'll be back shortly. In fact, why don't we head over to the Temple?" He's not about to tell Malfoy about Greyback or what he's done...he can't bear to tell it again as it is.

As Therion...

Elsbet seems almost embarrassed, and Irena studies her face in the mirror for several minutes before asking, "you've never really looked at yourself, have you, Ellie?" She shakes her head. "Not really, no...I can't remember ever really caring," she says. "May I ask you something? You don't have to tell me, of course, but I am curious," Irena says, and Elsbet nods as they walk back over to the sitting room. "You can ask me anything," Elsbet tells her and Irena smiles. "Ellie," she begins as they sit down, "when Severus looks at you, how do you feel?" A light blush touches Elsbet's cheeks and...

Dawn breaks and Elsbet wakes alone.

She wonders when this will end, when will she finally be waking with Severus beside her. Ah, but what about Lucius?

How does this work?

Her life has always been complicated in one way or another, but this complication is something totally new. But does it have to be a 'complication'?

She's not sure.

She's not sure of much right now, except that she hurts. Lucius must love Severus very much, and she knows Severus loves him. They've known each other forever, and she could see their love for each other that very first night, and Severus had always spoken so well...

Malfoy's blood strikes the parchment and there is a very loud hiss, like icy water on a red-hot hotplate, and the crimson fluid seems to boil. They are alarmed, of course, but the Chronicler laughs. "Ah, I nearly forgot! You are part of the Silhouettes, Lucius, yes?" Malfoy nods, not taking his eyes away from the sight, and tells the Chronicler that The Great Mother gave him part of her heart. Everyone relaxes once the parchment sorts out the differences in Malfoy's blood, and like a flash-fire, his family tree spreads out over the parchment. He watches as the name of Brutus Malfoy appears...

He had followed Snape before, but the Potions Master had always been able to elude him. Now, though, he'd beaten him to his secret destination.

And he can't believe what he sees.

Peering through the window of the tiny house he sees her; a Muggle woman, busy cleaning he surmises in preparation for Snape's arrival. She is alone and helpless. He could kill her easily. But he can't, not yet, anyway. He has to know what exactly the Dark wizard of his long acquaint is doing with this filthy little Muggle.
