That's what I thought : most of the orchestra is made up by strings. I guess N. Hooper just loves them. Well, the music is gorgeous, carrying a feeling of ominousness and sorrow at the same time.
Without the music, movies would not have the same emotional impact. Even if we do not pay attention to the music, as raptured as we may be by images, dialogs, action and actors/actresses (especially someone like Alan Rickman...), the music is essential to carry that emotional impact onto us, at a very subliminal level, which is very powerful then.
