Chapter 7: The Secrets We Keep
Lois stood there alone in the hospital corridor; her eyes still glued to the spot where Clark had just been moments ago. She couldn’t believe what just happened. I must be dreaming, she thought. There was no way Clark could move that fast, no way. He was Clark! She pinched her arm trying to wake herself up but it was no use. She was awake that was for sure, but was this real? She started thinking back on all the times he had made his quick exits and his half baked excuses. But why would he be keeping this from me? Was she that untrustworthy? She would never love Clark any less just because he has abnormal abilities; he’s a hero! After all the weird and unexplained she’s seen over the years in Smallville it wasn’t that hard to believe this. But it was hard to picture Clark being anything other than a farm boy. Nothing could change the way she felt about him, but it hurt her to know that he had been keeping this from her. She couldn’t just tell him she knew, that would be too easy. She was going to wait until he told her himself, she wanted him to love and trust her enough to tell her the truth. But she wasn’t going to just sit back and wait; what fun would that be? She walked across the cold floor back to her bed, anxiously awaiting his return. She lay down still in shock as she bit her bottom lip. She hated herself for thinking this of all things right now but she couldn’t get over the fact that Clark would make a very sexy superhero. She tried to get her mind out of the gutter, after all there was more to think about then his obvious sex appeal, he’s been lying to her! But she knew that after one look at him apologizing with those puppy dog eyes she wouldn’t be able to stay mad, and she hated it. She tugged on the collar of her shirt finding it excruciatingly hot as flashes of Clark being a hero came to mind. There was something about Clark being a superhero that made her all gooey inside. Why did he have to be so damn irresistible?
“Snap out of it Lois!” she muffled to herself under her breath. Now was not the time to be thinking dirty thoughts about Clark when she just found out he’s been keeping only the biggest secret of all from her! Why had she become able to accept the thought of being Clark’s superhero girlfriend but not Ollie’s? That was the reason why she ended things with Ollie but for some odd reason with Clark it felt…different.
She heard footsteps coming closer from a distance and then she saw Clark appear in the doorway.
“Hi Lo, I’m sorry I had to go! Are you feeling okay?” He hated leaving her alone especially with all that’s happened in the last couple days, but he couldn’t just forget about everyone else in the world even if he wanted to. He had a destiny, a purpose and how could he teach his child to do the right thing if he couldn’t.
“Hi, yeah I’m fine. So, what did Tess want?” She kept her gaze away from Clark’s not being able to look him in the eye when she knew how he’d been lying to her.
“She wanted to run some things by me about my next article.” He nervously replied as he pulled up a chair and sat down beside her bed. He hated lying to her. He wanted so much just to tell her the truth but he was worried. What is she was looked at him differently? What if she was mad at him for not telling her sooner? Or even worse, what if she was put in danger from keeping his secret? It had happened before, with Pete and he knew he wouldn’t be able to live with himself if that happened to her. He already felt horrible enough for Pete but there was no way he could risk that happening to Lois, she meant too much to him. He couldn’t help but notice that Lois was acting funny. Usually her hazel eyes were always intensely locked with his baby blues, but she wouldn’t even look at him. Something was wrong and he knew it would take a lot to get her to admit it. “Lo, what’s wrong? Don’t you know by now that I can tell when something bothering you?” He saw a hint of a smile come across her lips, she liked the fact that he knew her so well.
“How would you feel if you found out someone you loved very much was keeping a huge secret from you?” She kept her eyes locked on her fingers, she didn’t want to give away that she was talking about him and she knew that if he looked into her eyes he’d be able to see right through her.
“I don’t know, I guess it would depend on what that secret was and why they had been keeping it from me for so long.” He answered as his eyebrows wrinkled, there was no way she was talking about him was there? What if she had found out? No it couldn’t be; he’d been too safe. He’s been keeping this from her for about five years now and she’s never suspected a thing.
“And what if this person doesn’t know you know?” she asked, she had planned to be a lot more discrete about this but it wasn’t working out that way. She had to know the truth but she was torn. Torn between blurting it all out right now or waiting until he was ready. That is, if he’d ever be ready.
“Lois, what are you talking about?” he was officially very nervous she figured it all out. Why else would she be asking all these cryptic questions? If only he had a mind reading power, yeah that would make this a lot easier. Maybe the only way to solve this way to just tell her. If there was something he didn’t want it was for her to tell him she knew; if anything she deserved to be told. Even if she already knew, it would make her feel better, more trusted to hear it from him first. He went through the same problem with Chloe and he wished everyday he could go back and tell her himself. But what if he was just being paranoid, what if she didn’t actually know anything and he put her life in danger over nothing. He inched closer towards her, and placed his hand on her cheek, shifting her face towards his.
“I was…just thinking back to when I found out about Ollie.” She lied. She tried to sound convincing but could barely convince herself she was telling the truth. “I’m sorry I’m sure you don’t want to hear that I’m thinking about Ollie.” She gave a forced smile. Why did this have to be so complicated? She wished she’d never seen it, she wished she could forget all about it so they could go back to the way they were. She hated deceiving him, but she just didn’t think it was fair to him to tell him she knew.
“I’m not jealous. We’re together now and nobody can ruin that.” He returned a forced smile. He knew it was more than that, or at least he hoped. He was a little jealous that she was supposedly thinking about Oliver and a part of him made him wanted her to have found out about him. That way he’d be forced to tell her the truth and they could be free to live on without any secrets. He liked having Chloe know his secret it strengthened their bond and brought them closer together and he found a friend in her he never thought was possible. He thought back on the conversation he once had with his mom about Lois.
“Having Chloe know my secret feels good and it’s got me to wonder if maybe revealing my secret to more people wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Maybe we all need a hero we can look up to.” Clark asked his mom who always had the best advice.
“Clark, having Chloe know is one thing. She is a close friend of yours and she would never turn against you. But not everyone out there is like Chloe, there are a lot of bad people out there who wouldn’t stop until you are locked up and analyzed.”She said with a worried tone as she sat down on the couch next to her son.
“But what if you’re wrong and people accept me for who I am?” he asked, he always believed the good in everyone and it often turned out bad.
“There is no doubt that some will accept you, but trust me I’ve met my share of cruel people who’s sole purpose is to take down heroes. I won’t let you risk your life just so you can go around without secrets. If we thought the world was ready for a superhuman we would have let your abilities be known since you were small.”
“I know, you’re right. It’s just hard to constantly lie to the ones I love. I just wish there were more people I could be myself around.” He gave his mom those puppy dog eyes that made her heartbreak.
“Even though you can’t tell everyone, there are some people you can trust.”
“Like whom?” he asked, puzzled, trying to think of who his mom had been hinting at.
“Like Lois, Clark.” She smiled; she loved Lois like a daughter and knew she would understand. She herself often wondered why he hadn’t told her yet.
“Lois?” Clark laughed. “Why would I want to be myself around Lois when I barely like being around her?”
She rolled her eyes at her son and chuckled. “I think it’s time you accept the fact that you like being around Lois and even if you won’t admit it right now, you would love to have her know the truth.”
“Mom, in case you haven't noticed we are not exactly best friends! And I doubt whether she'd even be remotely interested in my secret!” His voice trailed as he spoke his mind, partly shocked with his own thoughts.
“Clark, trust me! I know for sure that she is more a part of your life than you are willing to admit.” She reached out to graze Clark's arms gently. He looked directly at her eyes wondering about the things she had left unspoken.
Clark smiled at the memory. He had always denied his feelings for Lois, pretending he hated her when in reality he loved being around her. He put her hand in his and leaned in closer towards her. “Lois, there’s something I need to tell you.”
