Chapter 12: Green Eyed Monster

They came to an abrupt stop in an alley right around the corner of the Daily Planet. Lois’ head resting on Clark’s chest as her arms were wrapped tightly around his neck. He looked down at her, her eyes squeezed shut.

“Lois, you can let go now.” He chuckled.
Her eyes quickly opened and her grip loosened. “Me? Oh yeah right…sorry.” She giggled as she hopped out of his arms. She flattened out her outfit and ruffled her hair. “How do I look?” she asked, hoping the run to the Planet didn’t cause too much damage.

“You look exactly like how you did 2 minutes ago.” He laughed. She shot him a disapproving look.

“Listen Clark, what did I say? Rule number 2; always make a good first impression.” She reminded him.

“And don’t screw up with the boss.” He quoted with a smile. “But I don’t understand! We know all these people! We’ve only been gone for like two weeks!” he told her confused.

“Exactly! We have been gone; when we walk in there we have to show them that we’re back and on top of our game and remind them of what they’ve been missing!” she said with a devilish grin as she fixed his tie.

----------------------

The doors of the elevator opened up to the bullpen. Clark noticed the immense smile that came across Lois’ face. She walked out and headed to her desk, he followed right behind her. He noticed all the heads turning and even a few quiet whistles coming from their male co-workers as she made her way to her desk. She didn’t seem to notice, but Clark became quite jealous over her sudden attention getting. He slid his fingers in between hers just to remind everyone she was his, and nobody could take her away. She looked down at their joined hands and glanced over at Clark. He waited for her to pull away making some remark about how the workplace wasn’t for relationships or whatever but instead she just smiled.

They got to their desks and sat down, taking a moment to enjoy their return to the Planet. They fixated their gaze on each other, so much love held in their stare and for a few moments it was as if nothing in the busy bullpen existed, it was just the two of them. But then to Clark’s dismay they were brought back to reality by a few male co-workers who came to see Lois. They surrounded her desk, all asking how she was feeling and how glad they were to see her back. Clark sat in his chair turning back and for, glaring at all the guys who thought they could have a chance. He saw Lois smiling and laughing at whatever ridiculous nonsense came out of their mouths and he hated every minute of it. He cleared his throat trying to get her attention diverted from them but he didn’t succeed. Finally after what felt like hours but in reality was only minutes he leaned forward resting his elbows on his desk.

“Lois, I think we should go see Tess. You know, to let her know were back.” He interrupted, trying to hide the jealousy in his voice.

“Sorry what?” she asked, not having heard Clark through all the chatter surrounding her desk. She leaned forward in order to hear better, and Clark watched the gaze of her male friends shift to the very revealing plunging neckline of her blouse. She noticed the tense look in his eyes as he stared down who he believed to be, his competitors.

“We should go see Tess.” He said with a short tone.

“Okay sounds good!” she nodded and stood up from her desk. “Sorry boys, we’ll have to continue this later.” She smiled. Clark got up and starting heading towards the elevator, she quickly followed trying to catch up to him. They got into the elevator, standing side by side in complete silence. She turned and saw a serious look plastered across his face.

“Clark is something wrong?” she asked and pulled his body to face hers.

“I'm fine.” He told her, his puppy dog eyes burning a hole in her hazel ones.

“I can tell when something’s bothering you, what is it?” she asked concerned, her hand squeezing his.

“Nothing really, I'm fine.” He lied. She rolled her eyes, giving up.

“Whatever.” She huffed. The elevator doors opened and they made their way to Tess’ office.

--------------

When they got back to their desks they noticed a bouquet of flowers waiting for Lois. She walked over and fished through them looking for a card. She finally found one stuck to the bottom of the vase.

“To Lois.” She read. “That’s weird, they forgot to sign it.” She said and showed it to Clark. He looked at it in disgust, and she raised a questioning eyebrow at the sight.

“Maybe they forgot.” He shrugged, trying to not seem interested in the matter.

“Guess so.” She agreed, smelling the flowers. She looked up and noticed Clark sitting in his chair, looking as though he was about to burst into tears in the middle of the bullpen. She walked over to him, and sat on the side of his desk leaning forward to hold his forearm. “Clark, tell me what’s wrong.” She demanded sincerely.

“Am I good enough?” he asked, looking up at her. She couldn’t help but let a giggle escape from her lips.

“Clark!” she smiled, and rubbed his arm. “Of course you are! What in the world would make you think otherwise?”
His gaze quickly shifted over to the flowers on her desk and then came back to her. She turned around to see what he was looking at smiled. “Those flowers? That’s what is making you doubt us?” she laughed, making a hint of a smile appear on his face. “Trust me, they were a nice gesture but common you know me, I'm not really a flower kind of girl.” She comforted him. She could see something was still troubling him. “Is it making Clarkie jealous?” she teased. When he didn’t answer she knew it was true, she walked over, grabbed the flowers and threw them in the garbage. “See, there, problem solved.” She grinned.

He looked at her in disbelief and glanced around the Planet. “What if someone saw that?” he asked worriedly.

“So what if they did?” she shrugged her shoulders.

“Maybe they’re from someone here!” he told her cautiously, almost in a whisper.

“Would you really prefer it if I kept them on my desk?” she asked and he stayed quiet. “Didn’t think so. And besides, the person can’t be that offended considering they didn’t even leave a name. I’m not insulting them by throwing them out, because I have no idea who they are. But, I am insulting you by keeping them on my desk.” she explained. He thought about it, and shrugged. It was a good enough explanation for him. “And for the record, I saw that jealous look on your face when all of those guys were talking to me before. But trust me; you’ve got nothing to worry about.” She raised a suggestive eyebrow and leaned in towards his ear. “They’ve got nothing on you.” She whispered. She fixed the collar on his shirt and then walked back to her desk. She saw him spinning back and forth in his chair with a huge grin on his face. She shook her head and laughed.

------------

It was late and they were still at the Planet. Clark had taken off a couple times during their day to make a few saves leaving Lois nervously awaiting his return. She had become so worried that one time he’d go off and never come back. It was probably his 8th save that day and she sat at her desk, alone in the bullpen tapping her pencil as she waited for him. She kept checking her watch every couple of seconds, anxiously awaiting that gush of wind to settle her nerves.

“What’s taking him so long?” she asked herself. “It’s been his longest save all night!” she stood up to get some more coffee. “Calm down Lois!” she told herself bitterly as she nibbled her stirring straw.

“Miss me?” Clark grinned as he suddenly appeared beside Lois holding a brown paper bag. “Thought you might be hungry.”

“Clark you’re a lifesaver!” she exclaimed and grabbed the bag. She brought it back to her desk and opened it pulling out the hamburgers and French fries packed inside. “Oh and while you were gone, I called the doctor. We have an appointment for the DNA test next week.” She said slowly. He placed his hand on her shoulder.

“You’re sure you want to do this?” he asked.

“Yes, I have to. I can’t go on not knowing.” She reassured him and she placed her hand on his. “Now let’s eat!” she smiled.
He sat on his chair and she passed him a burger. “Chloe texted me.” Clark said in between mouthfuls. “She wanted to see how you were doing. When are you going to see her?”

She looked up from her handful of French fries. “I was thinking we could stop by tomorrow?” she tilted her head and gave him a pleading smile.

“Sure!” he smiled. “Are we going to tell her?”

“Tell her about what? Us moving in together, me now being a part of the Clark-Kent-Secret-Knowing Club, or about the baby?” she giggled nervously.

“Why are you nervous about telling Chloe? I get why you were nervous to tell my mom, but she's your cousin.” He questioned, his brows furrowing in confusion.

“I don’t know, as much as I love her she's really judgmental. She may not approve of this whole situation. She’s like the mother I never had.” She started biting on her lip.

“I wouldn’t worry about it Lo.” He smiled and waited till she smiled back before returning to his food.

------------------------------

Hours had passed and it was getting really late but they were still at the Planet. It was as if they didn’t want to leave, they just wanted to enjoy their first day back together and make it last as long as it could. Lois was working hard on a new story and didn’t notice Clark sitting watching her deeply focused. She didn’t that is until he started making his chair squeak as he moved back and forth in it. She glanced over, giving him a questioning look.

“What?” she asked but he just smiled back, giving her no answer. “What?” she insisted. He just kept smiling as he got up from his desk and walked over to her side. He wrapped his arms around her waist and started trailing kisses across her neck. She tilted her head, wanting more. He drew himself back and whispered into her ear.

“You look beautiful today.” He smiled and walked back to his desk. She felt her heart fluttering from his sudden romantic gesture. She caught her breath and tried to make the redness on her cheeks disappear.

“Thanks Clark. You don’t look so bad yourself.” She winked. She heard a sudden vibration coming from her purse. She opened it and scrambled around looking for her phone. When she got a hold of it, she looked at the screen which said ‘1 New Message’. She pressed the button and began to read it. Clark watched the look on her face quickly turn to a mix of shock, fear and worry.

“Lois what is it?” he asked frantically. She didn’t answer, she just handed him the phone.

Roses are red, violets are blue, our love is so deep, if only you knew.
