What Annoys Me About The Phantom of Manhattan by Frederick Forsyth

All of the Leroux-bashing:

In the Preface, Forsyth repeatedly points out errors in Leroux’s novel, most of which are trivial and pointless (OMG! He said the chandelier was heavier than it really was! Shun Leroux!). And he keeps pointing out how Andrew Lloyd Webber “fixed” the errors, which brings me to…

Treating Andrew Lloyd Webber’s version like its perfect and the only “right” one:

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s stage show isn’t perfect. That being said, some parts of it were better in his version than in Leroux’s, but that doesn’t mean we should repeatedly say how wonderful it is. “Fredrick Forsyth not only captures the spirit and style of Gaston Leroux’s original novel but also the romance and trills that make the Phantom such an alluring character”~Andrew Lloyd Webber. Well, I wonder why he said that, maybe because Forsyth is saying how amazing his musical is?

He gave Erik a last name:

I’m not sure why this annoys me so much…I guess it just takes some of the mystery out of the character of Erik. Forsyth seems to do whatever he pleases with the characters, as if they were his own. Even Susan Kay had the decency not to give Erik a last name*.

The thing about Eriks father:

“My father never saw me”~The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. In Kay’s Phantom, Erik’s father dies before he is born. Forsyth, of course, didn’t care about that, and wrote Erik’s father as an abusive drunk.

Christine has Erik’s baby:

Leroux did not insinuate in way that they had sex. This is also the one thing I hate about Susan Kay’s Phantom.

Erik dresses up as a clown:

Do I even need to explain this? This is just wrong.

Erik’s age:

Forgive me if my math is wrong or if I misinterpreted something, but from what I read, Forsyth is saying that Erik was somewhere around 27 during the events of The Phantom of the Opera. He’s 50 in Kay’s Phantom, and somewhere around that in Leroux’s. Even Joel Schumacher .made him thirty-something (Gerard Butler was 35-ish while filming)

Pierre going with Erik even though he didn't even know him:

Okay, so his mom gets killed and he finds out that Raoul isn't really his dad, Erik is. So of course, Pierre does the only logical thing: goes with the random psycho he doesn't even know. And then poor Raoul is left all alone!

*I apologize if I keep relating things to Kay’s Phantom, but it is one of the best spin-off’s on anything that I’ve ever read.

So in short...the book sucked
I originally posted this on IMDB's board as VampireOutlaw.

No one wanted a sequel, <-- (generally speaking), it was still made, the critiques hate it, the fans hate it, it keeps on having to close down...Yet it's still here?
I know it has its share of fans, but nonetheless the crucially and strongly negative reception seems to be the situation in general.

So why the bloody hell does ALW not give up? Or if he can't bring himself to, why does he keep on trying with only minor changes?

~ First a sidenote:
Love Never Dies is not a sequel to the 2004 movie because that movie is Joel Schumacher's interpretation...

THE CURSE OF THE OPERA

Three days ago, on the 23rd of June 2013, a crisis to go down in the history of musical theatre occurred. The female lead, Christine Daee, in London's best loved musical, the Phantom of The Opera, was found dead in her hotel room after the magnificent first show's finale. Phillipa Jones, who played the role, had previously been telling the rest of the cast outlandish rumours of a face appearing behind her mirror - as the Phantom did to Christine's in the play.

Distraught, yet convinced the show must go on, the director (who will remain unnamed) forced her understudy to...

Curiosity Kills

This was written for the Featuring Luciana challenge. The challenge: Write a oneshot story describing Luciana's thoughs on Erik, shortly before her death.

“I want you to take off the mask. Please take off the mask.”

I am standing in front of Erik, begging him to remove the mask that hides his face from me. I want to know his face, to see him.

“You must excuse me, mademoiselle. I have work to finish.”

The nerve of him! “I will not excuse you! You don’t have work to finish! I want you to take off...

I have seen T.P.O.T.O many times, and most of them have been the 25th anniversary performance. This performance is by-far my favorite. Ramin Kariloo is the BEST Phantom I have ever seen. Sierra Boggess is also the best Christine. Hadley Fraser is one of the best Raoul's I have seen. Even Meg and Madame Giry were fantastic. Carlotta was probably my least favorite actress. I enjoyed this performance so much better because the actors seemed like they were literally their characters. I hope you enjoyed this and you can watch the entire performance on youtube. Thanks!

Carlotta is writen as a horrid character. She tells rumors and plans schemes to eliminate christine as her competition. I think what is often overlooked is that Carlotta is one of the so many victims of the book. From what is written you can tell that Carlotta was extremely talented as an opera singer as the book mentions how perfect an instrument her voice was. She had the misfortune to be ill and be replaced by someone far more loved and adored than herself, that in itself is enough to make anyone mad, take a day of sick and your job isnt waiting for you when you get back. Not only was she...

It is no secret that I'm not fond of Love Never Dies. I don't like the idea of ALW making a sequel to a show that had no need of one, I don't like the fact that although a good portion of the music (while fairly pretty) has been recycled or pinched from other sources while Wee Andy brags about how it's the best thing he's ever done and it's SO original, and I especially am appalled by what has been done to the characters. However, as it exists and it is impossible to avoid it in the fandom or erase it from my memory, I have decided that I must analyze it and try to figure out just what in the...

Remind you of anyone?
The Haunted Mansion ride at Disney has always been one of my favourite things, and Phantom tops the list at #1 fave thing. And a while back I started noticing really heavy similarities between the two things and I found many of them interesting. I thought I would share these observations here, so that others might enjoy the coincidences, or homages if you'd care to take it that way.

We will begin in the Foyer. Above the fireplace hangs a portrait where a young gentleman (presumably Master Gracey) hangs. It is here that the unseen guide for the attraction first makes his presence known.

All right.

So Tumblr has been crazy with this in the last few weeks since Sierra Boggess has left the Broadway production of The Phantom of the Opera on September 6th. A rather short run, so to say: she did start only on May 14th…

I wasn’t going to write anything about this at first. But now, rumor has it Sierra Boggess has stated that her 2014 run in Broadway was going to be the last time she would play Christine.

Cough cough.

Ha.

Of course.

Bullshit. Bullshit bullshit bullshit bullshit bullshit. BULLSHIT.

Everyone knows Sierra is Cameron Mackintosh’s and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s darling....
