The Witcher is a Netflix series that is an adaptation of The Witcher books. The series started in 2019 and has gone on to become quite popular. The series stars Henry Cavill as the title character. The series also stars Anya Chalotra, Freya Allen and Joey Batey.
The series focuses on Geralt of Rivia, the show's titular witcher. He is a very strong, imposing person that is quite a big physical threat to all the enemies that he comes across. He has no close friends aside from Jaskier, his comedic sidekick. Geralt's already intense life gets even more tense when he comes across a sorceress named Yennefer. Geralt and Yennefer quickly form an attraction to each other, but Geralt isn't sure if Yennefer can be trusted. Along the way, Geralt comes across a princess named Ciri. Geralt considers it his destiny to protect Ciri from the various threats that are after her.
The Witcher is a violent but exciting series. It has a sharp, compelling plot that helps the series feel like more than a series of cool action sequences. The plot of the series gets more interesting as it goes along, because of the bond between Geralt and Ciri. Their relationship, which feels like a father/daughter bond, gives the show a lot of heart. The series throws out enough twists to keep itself from getting stale or predictable. It's a clever series that stands out amongst other action shows.
Geralt is a great leading hero. He is intimidating, strong and fierce, but he also has enough humanity and heroic traits to be a likable protagonist. He's the type of character that his loved ones can depend on, while also being the type of character that his enemies have to watch out for. His complex yet touching bonds with Yennefer and Ciri carry the show. Yennefer and Ciri could arguably be considered protagonists in their own right, because they go through a lot of character development. Jaskier provides a lot of the comedy relief for the heroes, while Stregobor provides the comedy relief for the villains.
The Witcher is a fantasy show that has a lot of action scenes, so great visuals are a requirement. Thankfully, The Witcher succeeds at providing thrilling action scenes. Seeing Geralt in action is a really cool thing to witness. The show's visuals are really well done.
The Witcher's MVP has been Henry Cavill. He has proven himself to be an excellent choice to play Geralt. He has provided the character with a strong presence, a lot of range and a handsome physique. He has done such a good job that the announcement of him leaving the show after the third season has been hard for the fans to deal with. I'm not sure what the show will be like with Liam Hemsworth as Geralt, but I hope that things turn out well. Whether or not the series will work without Henry Cavill has yet to be known. What I can confirm is that The Witcher's first three seasons are compelling, action-packed and well-acted. Due to the show's dark themes and violence, it's not suitable for kids. However, the show is a must-watch for adult fans of fantasy and the super Henry Cavill.
