Chapter 19
A messed up version of a family reunion
The woman smiled, “Zyanna.” She held out her hand. I stood up, brushed off my jeans, and took her hand.
Now, it may not have been the smartest idea, but she was my mother. She came for me, and after having years of her out of my life, I wasn’t going to let an opportunity like this pass up.
She had this lithe grace, like I knew she would, and maneuvered her way through the forest. When we left it, the other side of the forest was this lush green grass and her van was parked in the middle of it. She suddenly started to speak.
“Were going back to Corrabines Estate, were your most safe. But, I’m afraid you can’t stay there forever. You still have your whole life ahead of you.”
I nodded, not daring to say another word, her eyes had this sadness in it. There was one reason I could think of why. She ushered me in, and I entered to meet a pair of baby blue eyes.
“Hey sis,” Bellaire said, giving me a cheeky grin. “Long time no see.”
“Bellaire!” I yelp, shocked.
“So you do know my name,” she stated beaming. “You don’t know how long I’ve waited for this moment. I had to tie myself down when Sebastian told me he saw you.”
“Wait a minute, you knew?” I asked, looking at both of them.
“I told her,” mom said. “I’m not surprised Vincent didn’t.”
“He barely confides in us,” I say.
“Those daredevil’s are sure courageous.” Bellaire tells me. “To sneak in a killer’s house and follow the map to the place.”
“Okay, now I’m confused.” I said, rubbing my temples. “Can we start at the beginning?”
“The very beginning,” mom concluded.
“Vincent was always like this, even before he killed. He always hated anyone and everyone around him, but maybe that’s because he had a horrible abusive drunk father.”
“He did? Why didn’t he tell anyone?” I ask.
“Maybe the same reason you haven’t.” Bellaire replies, srunching her head, I think this is the first time she hears this part too.
“No, he didn’t do it because he loved his father. He once told me that he was just biding his time, and soon he said his father would get what’s coming for him.”
“And he killed them,” I told them. “After he got kicked out of high school.”
Bellaire looked horrified, while mom looked impressed. “He told you that?”
I nodded, “in very descriptive detail.”
“Well Vincent and I, we’ve always been close, and he only opened up to me. Not anyone but me, one day we were talking and we decided to date, but he told me secretly. He doesn’t want people looking at him in school like someone dissecting a frog.”
I nodded, remembering how I felt the same once.
“So everything was going perfect, until we hit high school, and the boys were so ruthless and unashamed. Pigs, they were, just flirting and what not’s. Your father got jealous of one person in particular, he walked up to me started talking about elephants and then just kissed me.”
“Elephants?” Bellaire and I both said.
“Elephants,” mom confirmed. “So later that day, Vincent conerered him and confronted him about it. I don’t really know what really happened, but I remember running into the now burining science lab and seeing Vincent beating up the kid, ready to throw him in the fire. When I stopped them, we all ran out of the building.”
“So how did he get caught?” Bellaire asked the question I was thinking.
Mom laughed without humor, “he dropped something of his, what he wouldn’t say, and went back to the building, but he was caught when he tried to leave. He was expelled and the kid he beat up tipped the principal about some of what happened, he was suspended and your father expelled.”
“After my parents heard about that little rumor of Vincent and I, they forbidded me to see him. It was weeks since we haven’t spoken, and that was a huge record for us, it drove me crazy. So I started sending him letter’s in his and my favorite books, making it seem like he went to the library. We’d always write back in code. In case were caught I’d be his angel and he, my devil, we were vague in the beginning but later on we started writing deeper messages.”
“And then you guys had run away together?” Bellaire and I asked at the same time, looking at each other startled.
“Yep, we lived in Corrabines Estate for awhile, we had Azerien and you two. Vincent was angry that he had two girls instead of boys, he always said boys were the strongest of the species. So, we adopted Sebastian, to please him. We were a…a functional weird family, but we managed to get through. Until one day, he just got angry and left. I’ve always wondered why he took the both of you, but now I know.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Sweetie, if there’s anyone who should be sorry it’s me, I let him take you, you both.”
“Talking about that where’s Azerien?” Bellaire asked, gently.
“Father took him, apparently I’m not as important.” I told them, looking at my hands.
Bellaire pulled me to a hug, “we’ll get him back.”
I nodded, because if there’s one thing I know. If it’s too late to save father, it’s not to late to save Azerien. He’s still in there, and I hope I get to him in time. Because a real family, never gives up on each other.
We drove back to Corrabines Estate, Bellaire took my hand and led me through a series of halls and elevators until we reached their apartment.
“And here,” she said loudly. “Is where we live!”
I laughed, “nice place.”
Bellaire pointed to a certain room, bouncing up and down. “That is where moi and you use to sleep in, when we were babies!”
I nodded. “No wonder why everything looks so familiar.”
“It’s mostly due to the fact that ever since our dad left we never changed a thing.” Bellaire informed me, she pointed at a crack in the wall. “Except that’s new, Sebastian tried Zumba Fitness and it did not end well.”
I laughed, “must’ve been really bad, if he left a dent that big.”
Bellaire nodded, “it was. Okay, right now I have to go take a shower, mom’s number one rule when we leave,” she rolled her eyes. “But in the lobby there’s this diner thing and your going to look for Bobby Pepper and say Lucky Go Pepper.”
“Lucky Go Pepper?” I asked.
Bellaire grinned. “It’s like our family motto, you say that to him, with a face oh so similar to mine and he’ll let you in the special diner where it’s all you can eat for free.”
“For free?” I ask, awed.
“For free,” Bellaire nods. “Okay so see you soon.”
I nod and she give’s me a kiss on the cheek, while I hug her. A cute family moment that I’ve longed for ever since I learned the word love.
After that heartfelt see you later, I went down to the lobby, I was about to enter when someone called my name.
I turned around and my heart nearly stopped.
“America?”

“America?”
That if we believe in our souls
Then the doubt that we will fail
Will melt away
We must believe
There's no better time to do this
And we shall never give up
Because a helpless creature is dying
We shall help the creature
And if we come together and sing
All hope will become stronger and stronger
Like a candle building flame
We shall care for it
We shall be its shoulder to lean on
We shall never give up hope
If it dies, I die with it
It shall survive
If we give up all our hope
Nothing ever shall be alive again
The hope still blazes
Inside of each and every one of us,
And we believe that we will
Defeat our obstacle
There will be nothing to fight us
After we look inside ourselves
And find our strength
I have a dream,
That my little amazing creature
Will survive and get a new leg
It shall not die.
