Chapter 26
The club of doom and popularity
“Glad you guys could all make it,” Meredith said, grinning like a Cheshire cat. “As you know I’ve called you all girl’s because the day has finally arrived!”
All the girl’s around us squeal, I try to contain my excitement but my bright grinning face is a dead give away.
We’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time, ever since we’ve sat at that ‘cool table’ or as Destiny calls it the doom table, in high school, we were notified of the awesome pranks we’d get to do. It was…a club so to say, only the ‘populars’ could be in it, so you had to be known, sitting at that certain table, liked and have your name said in almost one conversation every day. It was stupid really, but the chance to be in that awesome club, wasn’t.
It was created at a girl’s sleepover, with boys who snuck in, by the legendary Inviena Dorce. It was quite a few years back, in the 1960’s I think. Where it was technically a game, and to be a member you had to be popular and have them bracelet. Everyone in the school knows about it, but I’m not telling Destiny about it, I don’t want her to know.
Today was the day we learned the official rules of the game, and pledged are membership, an honor like this meant a lot to me. Because only a few people know the real rules of the game, our…people, so to say, do a very good job of keeping it mysterious and secretive, which makes everyone want to be a part of it.
Meredith was standing now, being the leader of us all, she was given rules and bracelet prior to us, and was going to explain it to us on this glorious day.
“All right girl’s, you ready?”
“YES!”
Meredith laughed. “Now, we know only a few things about this club, but today you all are given free information, about everything. And right now you have to swear that you won’t tell anyone about our secrets and our doings.”
“Why?” Serache, Meredith’s cousin asked, looking scared.
“It’s the rules of the game.” Meredith snapped, before turning her attention back to us. “Swear?”
We all held our hands up high, as if we were raising them in a class to answer a question, and we all reached for Meredith’s hand. “Swear.”
“Good, now this club, is so to speak…a game. You’ve sworn to keep this a secret, but not your membership, yet. Now onto simpler things, the club’s name. We wanted it to be simple and have meaning, our founder named the club.”
“And the name is?” Serahce asked.
I shushed her.
“The drowning man.”
Silence as everyone in the room gulped.
“This club is basically a series of pranks for the lower food chain, ones who deserve it, ones who need to learn. Also, it tells us where you stand, which is us of course. We always come first. Even before family.”
That time Meredith looked at me, and I looked quickly away, she knew how important my family was, even though my parents were horrible, family comes first.
“Once you become a member, your in, and…it’s not so easy to get out, you have to do some pretty sticky stuff. Anyway, let’s get started with memberships. Bracelets?”
A girl appeared in the room, she held this box which the bracelets were in, she gave them to Meredith and quickly scurried out of the room, how I wished to be her right then.
“First, before we get into detail, you have to become a member. To become a member, which there’s no turning back now, you have to give us a prized jewelry you love to wear, and trade it for the bracelet.”
I instinctively grabbed my amulet on my neck, my grandma, such a sweet thing, gave it to me before she died. I remember clearly, she was in the hospital, her health was acting up, she must’ve known because she handed it to me.
“Please no, Grandma, it’s yours.” I had said.
But grandma didn’t listen. “Please child, it’s such a silly little old thing, no importance except for the fact that a young poor girl found it in her time of poverty, take it, sweetie, let it live on. And one day, give it to someone you truly care about, someone you know you’ll love forever, as they loved you.”
I blink tears away as I see that the other girl’s are taking off necklaces, ankle bracelets, bracelets, watches, etc.
“Dorothy, what are you giving?” Meredith asked me sharply narrowing her eyes.
“Oh! I’m giving you guys-”
“Because that amulet is looking pretty precious.”
“Oh, this, it’s just a silly little old thing. Not prized at all.” I hide my smile as I said grandma’s words.
“How about the BFF necklace then.”
I try my best to not look like I’m glaring at her, she knows that this necklace means a lot to me, to Destiny. She also knows how much it’ll crush her if she doesn’t see me wearing it anymore.
She always wanted to be my favorite.
Ever since we befriended each other, she’d always tried to make me hate Destiny, or make me like her better than Destiny. She’d always insult her when I wasn’t around, and she always jumped at the chance to become my #1. Sadly for her that will never happen.
I take off my necklace, and set it in the pile of the other jewelry, Meredith smiling smugly, puts on the bracelet for me as and refuses to help anyone else. As if that should make me feel flattered, but it didn’t.
“All right girl’s!” Meredith yells much more brightly. “Welcome to the group.”
I finger the bracelet, and I’m immediately angry, depressed, and drained. I didn’t want to be a member of the drowning man.
Literally.
I gasp as I resurface back into my own body, my own thoughts. Jessica and Cadence rush to me quickly.
“Desy! Are you okay?!” Jess looks worried and so does Cadence.
“Yes,” I say weakly, “and I’ve learned a few new things that juts might come in handy.”

I'm cheerful on the outside yes, but under this huge hyperfilled, cheerful girl is a fragile antique.
On the outside some see me as normal or energetic maybe the one apple with a hole in the barrel.
I'll plaster a smile every now and then to show the me-the fake me- to disguise the actual one pulling the strings.
As I stand before the mirror starring at myself I see that figure looming behind me his hand on my shoulder.
And at that moment my mask breaks and I'm stunned at my actual self.
I'm filled with depression, sadness, anger and haterid.
Never did I want to ever see the true me.
The mirror breaks and the man next to me whispers "Your mine." I look down in defeat.
Dropping to the ground-on my knees-I begin to cry.
He got the better of me and now I am no more.
"I'm a monster." I say to myself through a sob.

I am a broken-winged eagle
Who cannot fly
Because I have set no goal for myself.
Other people laugh and scoff at me,
And I know that I must quickly find something
To hope for.
Everyday I think,
"What's the use? Nothing is my talent. Give up."
People think I am nothing but stupid,
But I can see that light within myself.
I have not yet soared.
I have not yet found my dream.
One day, I find something unique to dream for.
Writing.
Something that can take me to faraway places
Anywhere, beyond this universe.
And now I can soar.
Far, far, faraway
Where no one can catch me.
Where no one can disturb me.
Where I can be free.
Where I will no longer be
A broken-winged eagle.
Who cannot fly
Because I have set no goal for myself.
Other people laugh and scoff at me,
And I know that I must quickly find something

A broken-winged eagle.
Let us hold hands in joy
Let us sit on the warm white sand
And let us watch the sun set tonight
We're gonna be a pair
We're gonna fly away
And let nobody go into our minds
Toni-i-ight
We're gonna slowly stand up
Listen to the waves
Roar and wash into the sand
And I'm gonna lean on you
Oh where were the times?
Where were the moments?
It seems like last year
When I kissed you and locked eyes
The sun's settin
But we're never gonna leave each other
Not if we stay together
Like ever...like forever
Watch the sun set
Watch the waves roll into each other
Oh my dear,
We're gonna never be separated
Sun sets,
Waves roll,
We're gonna sleep...
Side by side.
