*To Want A Vampire*
The air outside was warm and sticky, just like the North Carolina summer should be. I climbed out my window with newly found braveness, stretching my legs down to a tree trunk that looked ten times too small. My vampire courage moved me to the branch where I inched my way to the base of the tree.
This is stupid.
What the hell are you doing Catherine! I yelled at myself.
But I ignored the part of my brain that wanted to go back inside and lay in my warm bed, because that part wasn't nearly as strong as the part that wanted Gregory.
Once on the ground, I set out in a full on sprint. Down the road and to the almost invisible path Gregory had carried my through on our venture. I heard my feet pound the ground and I hoped he could hear them. Pounding for him to come save me. Pounding the same rhythm as my heart, which felt like it was going to jump out of my chest.
After running for was felt like an hour I came to a small pond. Either I missed this when we were running only a few hours before, or I was lost. God how I hoped i wasn't lost. I walked over to the edge of the water and stared down into the blackness. My reflection was dirty and beaten. Scratches running the length of my right cheek and my hair in a tangled mess. I tried to run my fingers through my hair but it was no use. Plunging my hands into the cold water, I splashed some on my face, rubbing as gently as possible. It felt nice. But not as nice as Gregory's arms would feel around me again. Listen to me! Get a grip Catherine he saved your life, he didn't propose.
I continued past the pond, knowing for sure now that I was lost. Nothing looked the same. It even smelled different. Like rotted meat, or decomposing flesh.
Thats when I noticed a large pile of something in the distance, on the other side of the pond. I ran to it, and as I did the stench got stronger, filling my head so it took all I could do not to run the other way. When I got close enough, I saw an arm.
A human arm.
Then another, then a leg, a hand, a face...
I felt a scream break my lips and my entire body shook with terror. I was looking at a pile of bodies. Just when I thought I was going to faint, a shadow came from behind the mound. I tall, slender shadow that had a graceful, almost angelic walk. I watched as it came around the mound until it was three feet away from me. I almost passed out from the smell of the bodies I didn't even realize how pale this person was. Or how hungry.
He smiled at me, his thin, fragile lips stretching over a pair of very sharp white teeth.
Another one! What am I a vampire magnet tonight? I couldn't breath. What if this one wasn't as forgiving as Gregory. I had a feeling he wasn't when he started licking his lips and getting a little too close for comfort. His hand lifted slowly and touched my cheek. His hand was colder than Gregory's.
He brushed it down my cheek to my neck and stopped, holding two fingers on my neck like he was checking my pulse. Was he checking my pulse? I felt myself begin to shake, my legs two seconds away from giving out and leaving my in a heap on the ground. Right next to these other poor bodies who didn't stand a chance against such a powerful creature. He started leaning in, his teeth growing a little longer as he got closer and closer to my skin. I could feel his icy breath on my skin when all the sudden he let go and was thrown to the other side of the pond. I heard him hit the ground with a soft thud, and when I whipped around to see my rescuer, my head swirled with joy.
Gregory.
