After 5 months

New York

I was exhausted. And I looked terrible. Of course I have many reasons to be happy : first, I've just arrested one of the biggest dealers in the state, second, I am alive and not even injured after that. I shouldn't worry about my appearance right now - I was working undercover. But few guys on the other side of the road whistled and I felt bad again. I wasn't used to walking on street dressed like girl who probably sleeps at night clubs. I stopped to look at my reflection in the window: tight and short black dress with too big decollete, bright red belt and matching high heels, vivid make-up. Why that stupid Lesley had to forget to bring me my clothes? And why he had gone without bringing me home first? He's gonna pay for it tomorrow. An old man on the corner grinned when he saw me. I should definitely hurry to come back home and get dressed properly. I was glad that it was late and no one of my neighbours saw me coming. I grabbed keys from my purse but then noticed that door was unlocked. Oh, God, please tell me I wasn't robbed. I pulled my gun out and glanced through the gap. The lights were on. And suddenly someone opened the door - I jumped back a step and stretched my gun. I needed few seconds to realize that I know the man standing in front of me. It was Edward.
"Hello" he said but I wasn't able to respond. I was in shock. What is he doing here? Did they changed their mind and he's here to kill me? But why would they do that? I haven't told anyone about them, I even destroyed every evidence I had. While I was standing frozen in the corridor Bella appeared in the doorway.
"Hi, Lilly. Hope you don't mind that we entered you apartment?" I looked behind her and noticed that everyone was here. My tiny apartment was crowded.
"Ehm... No, I don't mind" I was confused but I let down the gun "You know I could shoot you? I thought that it was a robber" but this fact didn't scare her, she just laughed.
"So why are you here?" I said coming in and closing the door behind. And I finally saw heir faces - expressions varied from concern to anger and fear. I just hope it's not my fault.
"Well, you mentioned that if we need help, we can ask yours, so here we are" Bella tried to say it as much happily as possible but I could feel anxiety in her voice.
"Lilly?" Alice frowned.
"What?"
"Did you change your style?" her words made me remember how I look like and I felt a wave of embarrassment. I knew how much she likes elegant and expensive stuff so my cheap and provocative appearance should really irritate her.
"I was undercover" I murmured and quickly went to bathroom. I felt much better when I changed into robe, washed my make-up and brushed my hair.
"So what kind of help do you need?" I asked coming out of the bathroom. Please please tell me it's not something illegal.
"You better sit down" Carlisle suggested and I noticed that they all were standing except Jacob who was eating a huge sandwich. Wait! That's my sandwich! He innocently met my gaze and smiled.
"You're not mad, are you? I was just a bit helping myself. Must say your fridge needs to contain more edible stuff" I was ready to snap out when Carlisle draw my attention to the matters.
"We are in a big big trouble, Lilly. We weren't sure whether to ask you or not because it's extremely dangerous, but we have no other choise. And you're involved too"
"Spill it"
"The problem is that there are more like us. Some of them are, lets just say, superior. They keep an eye on everyone to make sure that normal people would never know about our kind"
"Normal like me?"
"Yes. A few years ago there was danger to our family. I guess it's no big deal if I tell you their name - Volturi, they came to punish us cause they thought that Nessie is a threat"
"Nessie?" I interrupted cause I couldn't believe how this cute child could be threat.
"Well... Nessie was little and they didn't know what she will become when she'll grow up"
"And what she'll be?" I hoped he won't say Loch Ness monster.
"Nothing dangerous, I assure you. But what matters right now is that on their previous visit they met Jacob and and his friends. Don't get scared but they also belong to the supernatural world." he stopped to see my reaction but I was calm. One more supernatural thing? I guess I'm getting used to it. When I remained silent he continued.
"There are rules for our kind and they have nothing against us to destroy my family. But there are no rules for Jacob's friends. Alice saw the vision of Volturi coming to execute them. They are hoping to provoke us into fight either."
"OK..." I was a bit stunned. Their world is also full of intrigues and dishonest politicians. "Can I ask how can I help in this situation?"
"I didn't mention but one of Volturi - Aro can also read mind like Edward, but differently he need to touch person. If he's going to touch someone of my family he'll know about you. And trust me it won't be good for you"
"That's scary but you haven't answered my question - what will be my part in this situation?"
"We remembered that you're shield" Bella said with some real happiness now "I'm a shield too, but my ability is very... Whole? I can only use it whole or not"
"In different words" Edward continued "Aro will hear thoughts or not"
"Isn't it good enough?" I asked
