A debate that broke out on “The View” last week was so heated, that it caused a whole lot of commotion and backlash following its airing. The ladies of “The View” had been discussing the “N” word, which led to a debate over whether the word could be used in any context.

Whoopi Goldberg tried to explain to Elizabeth Hasselbeck, why it was okay for black people to use the word, but not white people. Hasselbeck, making the point that we should be moving towards a world in which we are all the same, made the point that she didn’t think it was okay for anybody to use the word.

The debate left Hasselbeck in tears, and acknowledging that it was a very difficult conversation to have, but that they on “The View” could have it, because they loved each other. Apparently, the critics didn’t buy that there was all this “love,” and the women felt they needed to address the way in which they all relate to each other.

Barbara Walters and the rest of the women wanted to respond to critics who had lashed out against them, suggesting that the conversation had been mean-spirited or out of control. Walters hit back first, and wanted to make clear that the women hadn’t been involved in a catfight, but rather a spirited debate, and that “The View” was one of the few shows where debates like the one in question could take place and it’s “not personal.” Barbara Walters said meaningfully, “We like each other,” and the women chimed in that they’d been able to enjoy the rest of the episode, and had a photo shoot following the episode, which they all enjoyed. We guess, once Elizabeth dried those tears, the fun could begin immediately!

Elizabeth Hasselbeck compared the relationships that the women on “The View” have with each other to the ones people tend to have with their family members, where “unconditional love and respect” is present. Whoopi Goldberg wanted to make sure that people knew that she was merely expressing an opinion, not attacking Elizabeth during the debate. Said a poised Goldberg, “Please don’t mischaracterize me. If I was going to attack somebody, you would know what it looked like”

Later she said, “If you want somebody to beat up on somebody, look on some other show. We’re not beating up on each other here…talking heads on all those other shows, look at your own house and see how dirty it is.”

We have to say, that bringing Whoopi Goldberg onto “The View” was one of the smartest decisions the shows producers ever made. It’s refreshing to see a woman express herself succinctly, calmly, and with passion. We say, keep up the good work, Whoopi.
