*This article contains graphic imagery, violence and gore, and disturbing content and may not be suited for some readers. You have been warned*

Corner of Horror has been rather tame since I first brought it up, haven’t I? Well, I think I should now start talking about subjects that appear to be a bit more disturbing. We live in a world that is full of fear and nightmares. We may not have monsters from our own dreams and from stories we hear running around, but we have people who can do some terrible things, or moments that could put us in a state of fear. That is what brings fear to us truly. The human psyche can only handle so much. So, I warn you know, this isn’t going to be like your typical light-hearted Corner of Horror episodes. These will contain some disturbing content, so I do not recommend this for those who are easily scared. As for those who are used to disturbing concepts, I am sure that what I have found will at the least make you a little uncomfortable. So, let’s get to it then

Manhunt

Manhunt was a game made by the company Rockstar back in 2003. Rockstar has been known for having lots of controversy with the Grand Theft Auto series, but the Manhunt series created a whole different sort of controversy. The series follows disturbed individuals who are forced to take part in a snuff film for mysterious individuals, who will film them as they murder dangerous and deranged serial killers and gang members in brutal ways, and then sell the films to those who wish to view them. The games are rather disturbing, as the violence is something that has never been seen before. There was much outcry against the game, stating that it was responsible for countless murders, and was given an Adults Only rating, even in the United States. Multiple countries banned the game entirely, making it illegal to play, including countries such as Ireland, Malaysia, New Zealand, South Korea, and possibly more. The extreme amount of violence in this game is most likely what made people not want this game sold in stores. Though it seems dated by today’s standards of video game violence, there are still countries who refuse to release the ban on Manhunt, and it will most likely stay that way. No news has been given on continuing the franchise, but Rockstar has given a few ideas on what they may do if they do decide to continue the Manhunt franchise.

Genocyber

Genocyber was a 1993 Japanese manga that still remains unfinished to this day, with only one volume being published of the story of Genocyber. Genocyber takes place in a world of a tyrannical government are in a violent battle with rebels who wish to overthrow the government. As a young couple tries to survive through it, a strange machine known as Genocyber, which is known for having extreme power. The Genocyber is created with the souls of two sisters, who are filled with anger and hatred for the world, and the people fight one another to obtain the control over something as powerful as the Genocyber. Though Genocyber is not known for it’s manga, the OVA that it has is much more infamous. The violence in Genocyber is not what you would wish to see. The first OVA, a group of masked individuals enter a hospital to find one of the major characters. They go around, mutilating and killing everyone in the hospital, and remove all the skin and flesh from a police detective, leaving his organs visible. In the second OVA, a group of young children are shot at by a helicopter and are ripped apart in very graphic detail. I think that what makes it more disturbing is how none of the characters seem to show any care about these people being slaughtered. Even when they are companions, there is little care for one another in the world of Genocyber.

Super Columbine Massacre RPG

The Columbine Massacre that took place in 1999 is something that still haunts many to this day, with shootings in schools still occurring today. When a video game that was based on the events of the Columbine Massacre was created back in 2005, it created a large amount of controversy. In this game, you play the roles of the notorious Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold as they begin their attack on the school. You are tasked with setting up bombs, and eventually killing as many students in the school as possible, before the duo commit suicide, which is then followed by a series of images of students corpses, and survivors shocked by the incident. The second half is a more of a dark comedy, showing the duo in hell as they do tasks for fictional video game characters and real life individuals, such as Ronald Reagan and John Lennon. The game was said to have been created to show the media's outlook on school shootings, such as describing the influence of video games, religious fundamentalism, and gun control. The game was despised by both the media and those who had experienced the Columbine Massacre, who described the game as offensive, and nothing but a glorification of the shooters. However, some game critics praise the game for it’s social commentary on society. While the game is in a rather digital sixteen-bit style, it still manages to be a rather unnerving experience.

Human Centipede

The Human Centipede was a 2009 horror movie that was mostly worked on by one man by the name of Tom Six. The movie follows a mentally disturbed German surgeon who is fascinated with the thought of a centipede and decides to create one out of humans. He kidnaps a man and two young woman, and begins his experiment. The three individuals are sewn together, the man at the front, one girl in the middle, and the other girl in the back. They are sewn together from their mouth to their anus, with the ones from behind forced to eat the excrement from the one in front of them. Their legs are badly damages, forcing them to crawl on the ground. The movie goes on showing the suffering of the three, as they are treated like some sort of bizarre animal by the surgeon. The movie was despised by critics, claiming it as nothing but a disgusting gore fest. However, the movie was loved enough by some fans to get two more movies, with each one being more and more disturbing and grotesque than the last.

Pupa

Pupa is a Japanese manga that lasted from 2011 to 2013. It follows the story of two siblings, a young boy named Utsutsu and his little sister, Yume, who grew up with an abusive father who would beat them and their mother, who left him to be with a different man. After their father left them, the two were left on their own, and Utsutsu promised to take care of Yume. After the two find red butterflies, they are infected with Pupa, a virus that turns any organism into an unstable monster that wishes to feed on humans. Yume has become a monster, and wishes to feed on humans, but Utsutsu, instead of turning into a monster, has the ability to regenerate his flesh. So, to keep the virus in Yume suppressed, Utsutsu must have Yume feed on his flesh while he takes a sort of drug to suppress the Pupa in him. The manga shows many kinds of disturbing imagery, such as Yume eating parts of Utsutsu, and with different kinds of monster imagery. The violence is disturbing enough, but with plenty of incest undertone and child abuse, the manga can be much more disturbing than you would imagine. An anime for Pupa was made, but, if you do wish to see Pupa, I’d prefer reading the manga. The anime isn’t that great.

As you can see, there are a few haunting things out there in reality. This is only the first list I have, with much more to discuss. If you have any recommendations for what I should talk about, feel free to let me know. I am sure that there will be plenty of disturbing things to discuss soon. Take care.

So let’s talk about something that the horror community hates me for (Because lord knows I love pleasing massive droves of people), and that’s that I like zombies. Well, most of the time. I like George A. Romero movies, I like Shaun of the Dead, and I like Resident Evil. But I’m willing to admit that zombies are far from being scary, or even creepy. They’re kinda dumb when you think about that. So then comes Dead Rising to tell you how dumb they are. But first, let’s talk about the sequel Dead Rising 2.
Dead Rising 2 follows a different protagonist from the first game, Chuck...
