Writing Question

Anyone good at coming up with names for mythical creatures?

I love writing stories about mythical creatures, but it's hard to come up with names for them. Anyone know some good names?

Use latin. Just take the thing it's most like, (and if you don't know latin roots or anything, use a translator. just google it.) and mesh it with latin. Everything sounds cooler in latin. Basically, just translating anything into a different language makes it sound cool. :)

That does work well, but when people who know latin read your story they think your an idiot. :)

Doesn't have to be Latin, I was just using that as an example. and I don't think anyone is fluent in latin, it's a dead language, but actually, not to sound egotistical, it makes you sound smart. and everyone mixes languages, look at JK Rowlings writing.

Euri said:
The way I come up with my names for mythical creatures is taking a bunch of letters and jumbling them together. Sound them out in your mind and tweak them until you have a neat sounding name. Like Alkavon, Milfina, Jidano.
Another way to do it is to take words and remove some of the letters. Like take abbreviated and take away the "b" and the "ted” and you come up with Arevia. This way usually works best with longer words.

Other languages, mixing languages, mixing words, mixing names... just flip through the dictionary to find two random words and mix them til it sounds cool. Claste, Swate, Swill... (made from click and paste, soap and plate, and grill and switch) rearrange letters or add somthin somewhere (like I did with swate) and somethin cool will come.

It does depend on whether you want first names for them or creature names.
