Her lungs screamed for more air, any air, her body begged for more heat, any heat. The energy had already seeped trough her clothes into the surrounding depths. All senses threatened to shut down and leave her lost in the darkness alone and too exhausted to give a care.

The chain around her ankles was keeping her from fighting back and pulled her down, down, down, deeper into the endless abyss. She tried to keep her eyes open, concentrating with non-existing energy on that last blotch of sunlight that filtered through the icy layer that had frozen over. It taunted the helpless girl. The bonds around her wrists wouldn't even allow her to reach up toward that fading beacon of life.

Images fought their way into her fogging mind. Her perfect memory played out scenes and flipped pictures of the ones she cared about. Her squad, teammates, friends, family: Bentley giving her a goodnight-kiss; Melissa and Lexi huddled on the couch in each other arms as their parents looked on with loving smiles; Sam infuriating Becca and causing WWIII, earning eye rolls and laughs from the others; Blade growling at Twan, looking just as intimidating as her boyfriend who watched with a smirk from the side lines; Richi calling upon a banshee, forcing a bloodthirsty mutt to collapse and whimper for mercy; Delta and Fin and Pheobe and Aisling and Seb and Scarlet and Alek and Shadow and on an on the snip-its flashed through her mind too quickly to hold on to.

A dark figure suddenly crashed through the splotch of light and swam closer an closer to her.
"An angel," she thought. She closed her eyes and accepted the peace of what came at the end.

But the peace is gone now. The fire in her veins is relit and coaxes red embers back into flickering flames, resetting the heat in her body and heart and soul. She strives to take a breath of air and coughs up lake water. She reopens her eyes and is met by dark blotches. Multiple blinks bring glistening emerald eyes into focus. A sigh of relief reaches her ears.
"Welcome back to the land of the living," her partner breaths.
