The Black Lake holds a misty fog as young Severus Snape stands at the edge of the murky water. Twenty minutes he had been standing there. Twenty minutes he had been waiting. It had been too long and the night brought a freezing air. Why had he even expected her to come? It was stupid, she wouldn’t come to accept his apology…Not after how badly he had spoken about her blood. She was probably curled up by the fire in the Gryffindore common room with her new love.
“Damn it, James,” Snape muttered aloud to himself.
Snape hated James Potter with a passion. Not only had he tormented Severus from day one, but now he had stolen away Lily Evans, the only girl Severus Snape has ever loved. The only girl he will ever love. This had been Lily and Severus’ favorite place to come on the school grounds. They used to sit by the small tree, and just stare at the lake. But now the lake held no more joy, not to Severus at least. This place was only evil and filled with memories. Memories and hopes of what could have been. He turned away from the water and headed back to the school, not wanting to waste anymore time waiting for someone who wouldn’t come.
The leaves crunched beneath his feet with every step as Snape walked back to the castle. As he approached the top of the hill, he saw a familiar figure waving at him.
“Snape!” the boy called out as he waved.
Severus squinted at first to get a better view of the teenager through the darkness but soon recognized that it was Lucius. Lucius Malfoy was a bit older than Snape, but they were still good friends.
“I’m going to Three Broomsticks with Rabastan,” Lucius said. “You should come!”
Snape finally reached where his friends were standing and frowned.
“Thanks for the offer,” he began glumly, “But it’s cold and it’s getting late…I think I’ll just turn in for the night…”
“Oh cmon Sev!” Lucius whined. “It’s only 9:30! What, are ya not feelin’ well, or something?”
Snape shook his head. “I’m fine,” he replied, “I’m just tired I guess…”
Rabastan, who was standing behind Lucius huffed.
“Severus Snape, tired? I’ve never heard of such a thing! Cmon, just come with us! I even heard Lily was going to be there…”
Snape’s eyes lit up. “Is she?”
Lucius and Rabastan both nodded. Snape thought for a bit and threw up his hands in surrender.
“Alright, alright. I’ll come okay? But I’m NOT dancing!”
Lucius laughed. “whatever you say, Sev.”
The three boys soon arrived at Three Broomsticks. At first, Severus regretted in going, but had a fun time walking with Rabastan and Lucius. Lucius was always a hot shot, but Rabastan didn’t talk much. It wasn’t until tonight that Snape realized what a funny guy Rabastan Lestrange really was. Lucius pushed open the door and most heads turned to face him immediately. Lucius always had a way of calling attention to himself…
“I got a call from the authorities that this party has gone too far!” He says jokingly.
“Oh is that right?” a girl’s voice rang from one side of the room.
Severus, Rabastan, and Lucius all turned to see none other than the eldest Black sister, Bellatrix Black smirking at Lucius. The dark haired girl was sitting on the lap of her boyfriend, Rodolphus Lestrange who was snickering silently.
“And what are you going to do? Arrest us? Lucius, I must say, I’m surprised we made it here before you!” Bellatrix remarks.
“Hey, it ain’t easy getting out of detention when Slughorn’s watching you like a hawk, okay, Black!” Lucius snapped as he walked further into the room.
“You didn’t just say that you had to use the bathroom? That’s what I always do…” the girl said cockily.
“Yeah, I actually thought that’s where you’d have Rodolphus right now Bella. You know for some… alone time..”
James Potter came into the picture with an arrogant look upon his face. Lucius and Rabastan both laughed mockingly. Snape however, glared at James. His blood boiling. Sure, Bellatrix ran around with every guy she saw suitable and the joke was probably a good one to represent her, but Snape just hated how James had to stick his nose into the conversation.
“At least she’s not courting some Mudblood trash,” Snape muttered lowly but just loud enough to be heard. Lucius and Rabastan both exchange glances, both wearing a huge grin. Bella and Rodolphus both looked shocked. And James, he looked as if he were going to beat Severus to the ground.
“What was that, Snivellus?” James growled.
“You heard me Pot-head Potter,” Snape snapped back. “Or you hard of hearing?”
“You better shut your mouth, Snape!”
“Or what? You’ll go tell Dumbledore?” Snape mocked.
Lucius stood snickering with Rabastan when two younger girls approached them.
“What’s going on?” the taller one asked, looking worried.
The girls seemed to be close in age. They too were part of the Black family, Bellatrix’s younger sister’s to be exact.
“Nothing, Dromeda. James is starting trouble again and Snape just is trying to show him who’s boss,” Lucius whispered to the tall, brown haired girl. Andromeda Black was the second eldest sister, Narcissa black being the youngest of the three. All three girls possessed qualities that caused other girls to either be jealous or call them b**ch… Bella was just the girl who showed her beauty by seducing every guy with a pulse, Andromeda was the know it all, always trying to flaunt her intelligence, and Narcissa was the dramatic little brat who always got what she wanted.
Andromeda glanced around the room to see her older sister waving her hand, telling her to come over.
“Pardon me,” Dromeda said before running off to Bellatrix. Lucius could see the sisters whispering and giggling about something. What it was, he had no clue.
Shaking his head, Lucius turned to Narcissa, who was staring at the argument between James and Severus.
“Would you like a butter beer?” he asked kindly. “I’m buying…”
Narcissa smiled widely and nodded her head and went off to the bar with Lucius.
