“We ran as fast as we could but they had a car waiting on the highway. We know who it is and so dose Nessie!” Alice exclaimed in a high pitched voice handing me a crumpled branch. I sniffed it delicately. Everybody held their breath awaiting my reaction.
All of my memories came flooding back to me as I arched my back and flipped back into a low crouch feeling a sudden burst of energy. I knew this scent; it was Nahul’s the only half vampire half human boy in existence.
“How could he?” I whispered outraged, “I thought he was my friend!”
“But Nessie maybe he wanted more than that that.” Rosalie comforted me, stretching out a long pale hand to help me up.
“You think he was in love with me?” I questioned doubtfully as Rosalie pulled me up, “what would he see in me?” I laughed.
“So like your mother.” I heard dad mutter under his breath as Emmet and Jasper chuckled along with him. “Come on Nessie, you have had enough running around for one day, if you want to talk about this with us you can do it on the sofa.” He said more clearly as Jacob scooped me up in his arms as I made his way towards the sofa.
“JACOB PUT ME DOWN NOW!” I yelled feebly, boy was I fed up being treated like a baby, “please?” I added in a much smaller voice knowing that it might work.
“Don’t you dare?” Dad growled in a playful but menacing voice.
“Sorry Ness but I value my life to much!” Jacob joked as he sat me down on the sofa. I dint laugh, I was still brewing over why Nahul would try to attack 13 fully matured vampires to get to me.
“Do you think he will come back?” I questioned looking directly at Carlisle
“It’s a possibility, but why he would try to track our defences alone is a mystery to me. Tanya what are your theories?” Carlisle mused.
All of a sudden I froze, why somebody would try to attack our defences alone because they weren’t really alone.
“He’s not alone.” I whispered in a strangled voice.
“Nessie there was only the scent of one vampire on the highway.” Jasper said kindly but unsure.
“No that’s not what I meant, “everybody was looking at me now awaiting my theory, “he came alone today to see how strong our defences were; he has others waiting. Ready to attack.”
“Hmmm, she could be right,” Jacob said, “but wouldn’t he attack in La Push, Nessie and I spend lots of time there.”
“No, he knows what you are and with sixteen fully grown wolves is almost as dangerous as attacking us.” Mum whispered.
“Look I think that you should teach me to fight and then we can all go out and wait for him to return, it’s the most obvious answer,” I muttered, knowing that even Emmet wouldn’t let me have my own way on this one, “Jacob will be with me, we will be safe.” I continued, looking at my feet.
“Look Edward,” mum murmured gripping dads hand, “maybe we should teach her. Its better for her to be well protected than not at all.” She said gently.
“Well when you put it that way...” Dad said trailing off.
“Yay! Thanks mum thanks dad your the best,” I laughed jumping up, “Emmet, Jasper, Alice come on!” I squealed as I staggered drunkenly towards the door.
“Hey, hold on their Ness,” Emmet chuckled catching my arms, “I think we should wait until you can walk properly before we start teaching you to fight.” And placing me back don on my bed of captivity.
Mum gave dad a meaningful glance as he slowly walked forward to my IV.
“No, please no!” I shrieked, but he was already pumping the clear fluids down the tube.
“Sorry my Nessie,” he whispered as he kissed my forehead, “When you wake up again you can learn to fight.”
I tried to protest but my limbs wouldn’t do what I wanted them to as I sank in to a deep untroubled sleep.
