Do you believe that you can only be a Harry Potter fan if you have read all of the books?

I think if you are a real fan you should read the books. You can be a fan of the movies but if you are a fan of Harry Potter you read the book because that is the really Harry Potter.
What I get from your comment you are a real HP fan because you are trying to read the books and maybe even want to read all of them.

To those people who complains about that they can't read for some reasons, there is a reason there is audio books. I have read and "read" all of the books myself several times (16/7 times, the last one only 6 times). I even learn to read properly from HP but I do listen to the audio books sometimes because I don't like to read so much anymore like I did before, so today I try to walk so much as possible and in the mean time I listen to the books. English isn't my first language but I listen to them in English because I love his voice, I mean he really brings the characters alive. And when I listen to them in English, I improve english at the same time.
I really enjoy that.

You can be a fan at any time, even just watching the movies. However, to be a true, die-hard fan, you have to read the books. But you're already reading the books, so if you continue to love them and read them, then you're perfectly die-hard :)

Personnally I have read all the books and I've seen all the movies but I just consider myself just as a fan.
I don't believe of the crap and I repeat clearly myself THE crap other fans or people call "TRUE FAN" it doesn't exist such a thing or person or group of persons.
It's just a damn way to separate us and to make people feel bad just because they only like the books or only likes the movies.
For me you are A fan because you like what you read or watched or both, that is a fan.
Being a fan is just liking the books or just one book or one movie. People who say: "True fans blablabla" just wants to give themselves some importance. I don't see the big deal about it. We're all HP fans and we're all equal just by that.
True fan stuff is just BS.

If you ask me, the answer is simple. You can be a fan if you haven't read the books. But you can not fully appreciate the beauty held in Harry Potter. So basically what I'm saying is this: you are a fan. Not a true fan. When you've read all the books though...that's a different story.

At least you aren't one of those people who watches the movies then reads the first two pages of the first book and say, "I don't like it. It's stupid." Hope you finish them soon!

My Sister and Brother didn't start reading the books until they saw the films. And my Mother, who has seen all the movies, has never once picked up a Harry Potter book, and she calls her self a "Die-hard" fan.

Maybe to some people that would mean you're not a true fan. But who cares what they think? What matters most is what you think...

I stared loving Harry Potter when I saw the HP1 movie! I was so in love with it. U don't have to read all 7 books to become a fan of HP, HP is sooo cool that you can be a fan of it by only watching the HP 1 movie ;) it's possible. And I did'nt read all books yet,I just read HP 1,2 & 3 and saw all the movies. I agree with @innocenta.

No you don't need to have read all the books I was 3 when I became a fan of Harry Potter and I couldn't read and so far I have only read Chamber of Secrets and the Prisoner of Azkaban

I don't agree with your mom at all. Being a 'real' fan of anything is subjective. I've seen all the moves, read all the books -- starting when they first came out --, been to almost all the midnight releases, dressed up as characters, and had themed parties. But I don't have the books on tape, and hardly have any memorabilia, and some might say that I'm not a 'real fan.'

A real fan is someone who loves the series, regardless of whether they've read all the books, seen all the movies, only got into it because of certain actors or movies, or got into it once it got 'popular.' The way I see it: if someone tells you you're not a real fan because you didn't do what they've done, they're just trying to make themselves look and feel better by making you look small.

You love the series -- that's all that matters.

I think that's a minimum, as everything started there, in the books. There might have been no movies, yet the books are still there.

The movies are great and in so many aspects, they convey what the atmosphere of the books fairly well. Plus the cast is just wonderful. I encourage my students in the English language to watch the movies because they are an highly enjoyable way to improve English, thanks to the impeccable diction of some of the actors.

However, the movies could not tell everything. Many important subplots have been discarded. The books are far richer and it's a pity not to read them.

Well you're a fan of the movies , but to be a TRUE fan you have to read the books . I mean that's what everythings based on and I believe you do have to read the books if you want to call yourself a true potterhead .

No. I'm a very big fan of the movies. But never read the books. Well,except I read a few chapters on book 5. Just sayin.

I don't think you have to read all of the books to be a true HP fan I've only read the last 2 myself and it did help me understand more about some of the characters better like Severus the movies make him look pretty bad but once you read the books you really understand why he had to be the way he was

You're a real fan when you believe you're a real fan, not when other believe it.

You certainly can be a real HP fan without reading the books, but you're cheating yourself if you don't read them. The movies are great, sure, but they pale in comparison to what JK Rowling wrote. When you watch the movies, you're only getting maybe a quarter of the story, and you're getting someone else's vision of it. Only when you read the books do you get the whole story, and you can make your own movie in your mind. You have your own vision of the story, and I think that's far more valuable.

And honestly, you don't really know the true depth of the characters if you don't read them. And if you never read the books, then you will never truly understand how brave, how awesome was our Potions Master, or how great was his sacrifice, because the movies do not do Severus Snape justice. Alan Rickman does, have no doubt, but the films just don't.

And if you're a fan of Sirius Black and Remus Lupin, as I am (passionately), you'll never really know them if you don't read the books. Because the movies trivialize them terribly.

If you never read the books, you'll never meet Peeves, and that would just be sad, because he's such a wicked little guy. I love him. ;)

I don't think you have to read the books to be a fan. I have several friends that like the movies and have never picked up one of the books in their lives. That being said, I always encourage people to read the books. They have so many awesome moments in them that, unfortunately, never made it to the big screen. It takes longer to read a book than to watch a movie, but the books are totally worth reading. You can't get a full understanding of the magical world and of Harry's story if you just watch the movies.

No. There's lots of Harry Potter fans who haven't read the books, they just watch the movies.

Granted, I think you'll like Harry Potter more after you've read all the books because the movies miss a lot.

Everyone has their opinion. But I think it's a bit silly to asume anyone has the ability to say if someone else is really a true fan or not. That's for you to say.

i think being an harry potter fan you don't need to read all the books.you can just watch the first few movies of harry potter to under stand them.

No, you can be a fan if you've only seenthe movies too. But if you're a real fan, you will read the books.

i personally don't think it matters what you do its more of how you feel about something that makes you a true fan if you read all the books and watch all the movies but don't have a huge interest in it than your not a true fan but if you read a few books or watch some movies and absolutly love it than i think that makes you a fan. I think its a personal desicion and judgement whether or not your a fan no one else can say that your not a real fan because you do or don't do something that is up to you. If that makes sense

I think that if you read the books you will understand the movie more but if you just watch the movies then you are still a fellow potter fan because really a potter fan just loves harry potter even if it is just the movies.

No. You don't have to read the books to be a true HP fan. Either makes you a fan. Just as long as you love the story. But you might get a better understanding of the story and get to read somethings that wasn't in the movies if you read the books.
