I just knew I had to write this article after seeing a lot of fans debating on the topic:

"Are the books or movies better?"

So first of all, my love for Harry Potter didn't start from the books. My mother kept recommending them to me, but I was younger when the books came out first. That days, I always judged a book by its cover. So when I saw a random boy with a scar on his forehead standing and 7 books about him, I said, "Mom, stop. I don't wanna read it, I feel like it won't be interesting,"

My mom said ok, and we left the bookshop. But from that day on, my friends started watching Harry Potter like crazy. I was left out because I didn't even know a word they were saying. Who the heck is Voldemort? What is a "muggle"? My best friends were potterheads and I knew I had to learn it, so the next day me and my sister started watching Harry Potter.

My English wasn't that good, and we opened the movies in English. I couldn't get a thing from Harry Potter. What is the purpose and you might find this funny but Minerva was scaring me. At the first scenes I quickly shut the TV, and didn't watch the movie for YEARS.

Uhh well.. One day, I thought I was enough grown up for the series to not scare me, and I opened them. The movies were amazing and as a stupid kid I couldn't help but have a crush on Harry-sorry about that. I still didn't get some parts of the movies but I kinda got the wizarding world and the fantasy JKR made just amazed me! Plus, I related to Hermione a lot, so I bought thousands of Hermione stuff.
I kept reading fanfics on the internet, watched the movies a thousand times again and again, and finally became a potterhead. I couldn't live a day without thinking of the movies lol.

Since I read a lot of fanfics and liked the first movies the most that days, I shipped Hermione and Harry. My opinion hasn't still changed though, but that's not the point. When I learned Ginny and Harry were together, I was in shock. Plus in many more reasons, (mostly the hermione x harry ruining) I started to dislike Ginny.

That's when people started to force me to read the books, and since I watched the movies and they got me in the potter world I couldn't think the books were better. And I knew I had to read them because people wouldn't accept me as a Potter head.

But I am a big bookworm, and the day I started reading the books, I finished them all in a week. Ofc, I'm still periodically reading them because they are my fav books! So I just preferred the books, still do. First of all, the books explained everything in details, and made everything clear that were mixed up in movies. For example, I missed why Dobby was saved and while reading the books it turned out Lucius threw the sock and Dobby caught it, since Lucius threw it, Dobby was free.

And I didn't get the scary soul-suckers and what they were doing in Hogwarts. But in the books, its clearly explained that the dementors came all the way from Azkaban to protect the building from Sirius, but got to the Dark Lord's way later.

Through books, I managed to like characters better ( for example I loved Ron in the books but disliked him in the movies) and Hermione became my favorite character. I like Snape more in movies and same for Ginny (even though I dislike both Ginny's) and its just it.

Just a small problem: since I watched the movies first, I imagined the character appearances in the movie, though in the book most didn't match. In the book, Hermione has big front teeth, in movies, she's perfect. In the book, Dudley is blond, in the movies he is a brunette. In the books, Harry has green eyes and Ginny has brown eyes, in movies they have both blue.

Not counting that appearance detail, the books are better for me. Just an opinion :)

C'ya !

I originally posted this as Kieran, at RPG-D and at my own Harry Potter RPG's forum. But I thought this would be useful for Harry Potter fanfiction writers in general as well.

There are countless ways you can perfeclly easily bring a muggle main character into any Harry Potter story or RPG & have a whole world of possibilities open for it - even if they don't know or never learn about magic's existence! They can know or learn, of course. Just, they really don't need to in order to be endlessly and colourfully written to a muggle's full potential.

If interested in how I connected my muggle...
