[End of Chapter 2[/b]
I did what was asked until there were four plates set out, three of them loaded with pasta with sauce, a salad with all the fixing, french bread and corn which I thought was strange but wasn't going to comment about when she cooked it for us. We took two plates out to our Fathers, who were very appreciative before returning to the kitchen where our plates were waiting, mine loaded with food and hers barely half full.
"How's school?" She asked as she pushed her pasta around her plate, her eyes flashing to the clock and up the stairs for some reason.
"Ehhh it's alright." I said, not wanting to talk about school with her. "Yours?"
"Boring," She laughed, her eyes looking at the clock again.
"Are you waiting for something?" I asked, wishing I wouldn't have said it the instant it was said.
"Edward was suppose to call." She admitted as she blushed.
I was just about to change the subject when there was a soft knock on the back door. Bella jumped out of her chair and rushed to the door, her eyes wide as she pulled it open to reveal who she had been waiting for. I paid attention to the look on her face as she reached out to touch his face, but at that exact moment the wind blew around him and the strangest smell hit me.
Chapter 3
I'm not sure I can put into words the smell that smashed into me, it was a strange combination of lemons, acidic metal and ice. I had never smelt something like that before, my hand instantly going to cover my mouth and nose. Edward's eyes looked at me, and it was like he had never seen me before. His head tilted slightly to the side as he lifted his chiseled nose and took a deep breath.
"Sorry, I think I burnt the sauce." Bella said as she watched him sniff the air.
"It isn't the sauce." Edward said as he reached out and pulled her to him, his hands resting on her lower back. "It's....something else."
Bella looked at him, obviously confused but then his eyes came to set on me..like I had something to do with all of this. I rolled my eyes at him, wishing that he would go away so I could have time to talk to Bella alone. In an almost response, Edward laughed a short chuckle as he looked at me. I wondered what he could possibly find so funny?
"I should go, you have company who wants your attention." He said as he chuckled again. "I'll see you in later." He said as he leaned in and kissed her head before nodding at me as he walked out the door.
"He'll see you later?" I asked as she turned back to the table, her cheeks a bit redder then they had been.
"Yeah...tomorrow at school. Jeez Jake, what's with the questions?" She asked defensively as she started stabbing her food.
"Whoa." I said as I raised my hands. "I was just asking, no need to spaz!" Bella looked at me for a second as she took a few deep breaths, then she smiled at me.
"I'm sorry," Bella said as she shook her long dark hair. "It's just the whole 'birthday' thing."
"Birthday thing?" I asked as I raised an eyebrow and smiled.
"Yeah, I would have been completely happy if no one knew when my birthday was. It just makes people feel like they have to buy me things or make me the center of attention." She said as she hung her head in her hands. "I know he's going to do something tomorrow...even though I told him not to."
I had a second where her head was in her hands that I reached my hand into my pocket, feeling the small box that held her present. I was walking through the small shops that sat along the road, meant to draw in the tourists. I had just stopped in to say hi to a friend when I saw the necklace sitting in the case. I knew that Bella meant beautiful and that's exactly what the small necklace in my pocket was. The tiny red rose that was beautifully carved out of a red stone.
"Jake?" She said as I looked up to see her watching me closely.
"Sorry, got lost in my own world again." I said as I smiled at her.
"Jacob, it's time." My father called from the living room.
"Well, even though you hate it...I wish you the happiest of birthdays Bella." I said as I reached forward and hugged her awkwardly.
"Thanks Jake, see ya later." She said as she patted my back.
"Thanks Charlie." I said as I went and began pushing my father to the door.
"No problem, thanks for coming." He said as he held the door for me.
I got my father all situated in the car and before I knew it we were half way home. The night was so dark, the sky clouded over so that the stars were blocked. I squinted as I drove, my eyes searching the sides of the road for deer or other wild life. I jumped a little when I heard my father make a small 'oh' noise.
"What did you see?" I asked as I applied pressure to the brakes.
"Just a friend." He said as he grinned.
I was about to say something about him loosing his mind when I saw them...two eyes, no two sets of eyes that seemed to be watching us drive by.
