Chapter One: A New Friend for Private
A young penguin was creeping along in the shadows, breathing heavily, trying to stay hidden. He looked around the corner only to see nothing. He tobogganed to the next wall. Almost there, the penguin thought. He froze in his tracks when he heard footsteps, quickly pressing himself against the cold concrete wall, hoping that the person wouldn't see him. Unfortunately, luck wasn't with him, and a penguin saw him.
"Hey, guys! Look!" the penguin yelled, pulling the frightened bird from the shadows. "I found him!"
A group of penguins formed around the two, closing in around them, yelling at the helpless penguin in the stronger one's grasp.
"Where's that fish you promised me?" the bigger penguin sneered.
"I don't have any," the penguin whimpered. "There was only enough for me. I ate it all, Snapper."
"You know what that means, don't you?" Snapper said, lifting the scared from the scruff of the penguin's neck.
Snapper threw the small penguin to the ground, hard. He pounced on the penguin, throwing punches wherever he could, mostly his face and chest.
All the small penguin could do was scream. He couldn't fight back; he didn't know how, and even if he did, he would just get bullied worse. Everyone seemed to be against him. No one ever cared. All he ever felt was pain; pain and hatred. Just as he was bracing himself for another punch, he heard someone yell.
"Hey, leave him alone! Get away!" a voice yelled. The crowd immediately dispersed, everyone running in different directions. A rather small penguin came stomping over, looking extremely angry. "You!" he yelled, pointing at Snapper. "Get off of him!"
Snapper stood up, holding the penguin forcefully by his flipper. "And just who do you think you are?" he asked angrily.
"A military officer," the penguin answered with authority. "And if you don't get off him, I'll have to report you for physical abuse."
Without anymore questions, Snapper quickly ran off, releasing the bird. The officer waddled to the small penguin's side, a concerned look drawn upon his face. "You okay?" he asked.
"I hurt," he moaned, clutching his right flipper.
"What's your name?"
"I don't have a name. No one ever named me."
"You can call me Skipper, and I'll call you Private, 'kay?"
Skipper carefully picked the newly named penguin up and started walking away. The only injuries Private seemed to have was a black eye, a few bruises, and maybe a broken wing. He was no medic, so he couldn't be sure. The child looked extremely young, as he still had most of his down feathers. Skipper sighed sadly. He's too young for this, the officer thought. His thoughts were interrupted when he heard Private ask, "Where are you taking me?"
The question caught Skipper by surprise. He glanced down at the child, who was staring at him curiously. "Uh, to the animal hospital, why?" said Skipper.
"I was just wondering," came the reply. Private mentally slapped himself. What a stupid question to ask! Where else would he be taking him?
They were silent for a while, the only sounds were the footsteps of the penguin and the normal sounds of the city. Skipper stopped when he heard a quiet, almost inaudible sob. He curiously looked at Private, who was crying.
"What's wrong?" the older penguin asked. Private's head flashed up in a moment with fear in his eyes. He slowly turned to the officer, tears streaming down his face. His sobbing increased, as he laid his head on the officer's chest.
"Hey, what's wrong?" the penguin repeated, more demanding this time.
"Just leave me here," Private cried.
"Why?"
The young penguin drew in a breath sharply, "Just do it. I-I... I don't wanna be bullied. If you take me to the hospital, their bullying will increase even more."
"Why don't you fight them back?!" Skipper demanded.
"That's the problem! I don't know how!" Private yelled. "Even if I did, I'm no match for them if they all team up against me, which they do a lot."
The officer sighed and set Private down into a sitting position. He sat down next to him, shaking his head. "Listen kid, if you're gonna survive in this world, you gotta know how to defend yourself. Do you think I didn't get my fair share of bullying when I was little? The only thing that would stop 'em was to fight back."
"My mum said you shouldn't settle a fight with violence," Private sniffed.
"Sometimes you have to," Skipper said quietly, patting Private's back assuringly. "Tell you what: I'm searching for a team to help me with my mission. If I teach you how to fight, will you help me?"
Private's face lit up immediately. An actual, real mission? And he was asked to help? It was to good to be true for the young Private. He would finally have a purpose.
"I'll be glad to help!" Private cried, hugging the shocked Skipper. Skipper wasn't one for compassion. He stiffly wrapped his flipper's around the small child. "Thank you, Skippah!"
"Um, you're welcome?" Skipper said unsurely. "I'm still gonna have to take you to the hospital, you know."
"Okay!" Private replied cheerfully. He released himself from Skipper, clearly happy.
Skipper shrugged it off. He scooped Private up, continuing on the the hospital.

Okay, I'm not satisfied with this, but I don't think this is the final product. I'm still working on it. ^^ Please enjoy the first chapter of my story!
