Something seemed to shine in the night sky. It looked like a star, but it was moving. She didn't hear of any shooting star trackings, but then she remembered that she heard on the news that Halley's Comet was supposed to swing by.
As Monique felt the breeze from sticking her head out the window and watching the comet fly by, a voice in her head was telling her something.
I know you don't mean for him to get in trouble, but sooner or later, Kowalski's going to have to choose between you and the team she thought to herself, don't make this decision difficult for him.
Monique put her head back inside and closed the window. She took out a suitcase and put what she might need in it, and anything smaller she might need, she put in her purse. The last thing she put in her suitcase was a framed picture of her and Kowalski sitting on a bench. Fortunately for her, she managed to keep herself from crying.
She left her apartment and looked over at the apartment the team stayed in. She didn't want to just leave Kowalski on the spot. She snuck in and found Kowalski's bedroom. She noticed that Kowalski was snoring, but that didn't bother her. As she came closer to him, she continued thinking that not only is he the reason she has to go, but he's the reason she doesn't want to go. As she finally reached his bedside, she held his hand, kissed his cheek, and told him I love you for what she believes might be the final time.
As she left and exited the building, she decided to look back at what she was leaving behind. As she looked back, she noticed someone was running in her direction. As she squinted a little, she was shocked as she recognized the person to be Kowalski. She walked over to him and as they reached each other, he was catching his breath.
"Wait, Monique," he almost shouted.
"Kowalski, how did you know where I was?"
"Did you really think I would be deeply asleep after the observation of Halley's Comet? I struggled to be in a deep sleep and when I heard and felt you, I knew I couldn't go back to sleep. The bigger questions are why are you leaving and where are you going?"
"That's the thing. I don't know where I might end up. But as long as I'm no longer here, you have no trouble to worry about."
Kowalski seemed puzzled, but was upset as he came to realization that skipper's strict attitude got to her.
"Monique, do you understand that I'll feel horrible if you go? You're important to me."
"So is the team. Kowalski, as skipper's distrust in me increases, so is his distrust in you. Sooner or later, you'll end up needing to choose between me or the team and my leaving will make it easier for you. Believe me, it'll almost be like getting another chance to live on my own."
Kowalski took in what she told him and a tear came out of his eye. Just then, he had an idea.
"Well, I'm going with you," Kowalski concluded while grabbing her hand.
Monique was shocked when she heard that. She didn't want to be selfish.
"Kowalski, the team needs you as much as you need them," she responded.
"The only one who would really notice and care is Private. Skipper just wants me to decrease my intellect due to a few mishaps and Rico is a bystander that goes along with authority. I need another chance to feel like my intellect isn't a curse, plus I'll still be with you," he explained.
Monique looked down at the hand Kowalski grabbed on to and realized that there shouldn't be any arguing with him. She just gave a sigh.
"You really want to leave with me?" She wanted to be sure.
"More than anything," he responded.
Monique closes her hand around Kowalski's and they both looked back, silently saying good bye to what they were leaving behind. As they were walking away, all that was on their minds was that is was a mystery what this second chance will bring to them.
