"Why can't you believe me Bella?" he asked me softly.
"Because . . . Because what you told me in the forest that day Edward . . . Was all true about us. I'm not good for you, I'm not enough for you."
"Yes. You. Are." His eyes were black fire as they gazed determiningly into mine.
I looked away, wishing with all my might that I was good enough for him and all of his perfection. But I wasn't.
"Please Bella, how can I make you see? Will you let me attempt to explain what you mean to me?" he pleaded with me until I finally met his gaze.
When he made sure I was listening, he continued.
"Before you, Bella, my life was like a moonless night. Very dark, but there were stars - points of light and reason . . . And then you shot across my sky like a meteor. Suddenly everything was on fire; there was brilliancy, there was beauty. When you were gone, when the meteor had fallen over the horizon, everything went black. Nothing had changed, but my eyes were blinded by the light. I couldn't see the stars anymore. And there was no more reason for anything."
I wanted to believe him. But this was my life without him that he was describing, not the other way around.
"Your eyes will adjust," I mumbled.
"That's just the problem - they can't."
I wanted to say something, but then he kept continuing.
"Bella, I love you. I have always loved you, and I will always love you. I was thinking of you, seeing your face in my mind, every second I was away. When I told you that I didn't want you, it was the very blackest kind of blasphemy."
I gazed at him for the longest, trying to believe everything he said. He lied to protect me, and now remorse shined in his midnight eyes. And I was a fool for him, I would believe anything that came from this man.
"I believe you." But I wouldn't let myself hope. Because that hope would kill me.
He smiled a full-blown grin and kissed me again until I was in need of air.
"Thank you Bella, I love you." He spoke in absolute contentment and he rested his forehead against mine.
"I love you too," I said as the words burned into my heart.
We were both comfortable in the silence that followed.
Suddenly, a loud cry filled the air and I knew who that cry belonged to.
