Ahh, high school. I took in my surroundings as I entered the newly built building and towards my locker.
The 'Welcome to RidgeWood' sign was still hung above the main entrance, there was still little splashes of glitter near the gym floor from our last school dance, (which of course I didn't go to) and the halls still smelt like perspiration, and despair. I slowly walked over to my locker and entered the combination '2...24...3'. I grabbed my AP Chemistry, and AP Calculus books. Those were my only two classes for the day because this week we had... Lion's Den!
Lion's Den is this whole 6 days that we totally have to ourselves to do whatever the hell we want. It was like recess. Since we were a small school, it worked out. Lion's Den only happened twice a year, so I know I have to make it worthwhile. Grabbing my sketchpad along with my two textbooks, I quickly made my way to Calculus.
I walked into the classroom to see that Trent saved a seat for me at his lab table. He's so sweet. He smiled at me and waved me over. I smiled back and started walking, but Courtney Fairbanks beat me to it. I rolled my eyes, watching her attempt to flirt with my boyfriend. Courtney has always had a thing for Trent. But, I never got jealous. I can trust him around other girls, + , it's Courtney. :P Looking around the room, I saw that there was no other seats left, except for the one next to...Duncan. What was Duncan doing in AP Calculus? He's actually really smart, but just doesn't choose to show it. As the bell rung, Mr.Studnickey (a.k.a my favorite teacher), walked up behind me.
"It seems that no other seats are available Gwen... oh wait, why don't you take a seat next to Duncan in the back?"
Just then everyone turned their heads to face the mohawk wearing punk. He was pretty quiet in his AP classes because practically everyone there thought that they were better than everyone else who wasn't in their classes. And seeing someone so popular and care free in their realms,I guess insulted them. But, I didn't really mind. A person's a person. Slightly blushing, I walked over to the seat next to him, occasionally shifting in my seat as the lesson went on.
"Ok, so I want you guys to work with the person sitting next to you to solve the next few equations for the rest of the class. Get started." It took a while for everyone to adjust to the instructions but eventually, each pair got to work, except for mine...
"So..." I trailed off. Duncan slightly raised his head so we could make eye contact. Wow, I never knew he had blue eyes... I love blue eyes.
"You wanna get this over with sweetheart?" he asked me, a little harshly. I slightly nodded, opening my textbook to the correct page. "Ok, 3x-"
"We met earlier today-" he started, looking me straight in the eye.
I just stared at him.
"Right?" he continued.
"Depends on your definition of 'meet'." I said, putting air quotes around meet.
"Anyway, I'm Duncan." he said smirking, holding out a hand as if I didn't already know his name. I mean, who doesn't?!
"Gwen." I bluntly responded, shaking his hand. Duncan scoffed.
"Nice first impression. Brighten up for once in your life." he commented, rolling his ocean colored eyes at me.
"Maybe I just don't like being happy." I replied, already starting the equations on my own. "Oh yeah. Even if I do... this?" he asked putting his hands on my stomach and tickling me.
"Duncan!" I giggled,
"Stop, stop..." Duncan finally stopped tickling me after what seemed like forever.
"Jerk." I laughed, punching him in the arm. "I've been called worst." he retorted, slightly chuckling. We both did the old laugh and sigh routine.
"You're not so bad Gwen. And I thought all of the kids in this class were boring sticks in the mud. I guess I was wrong." he explained, eyeing Trent specifically.
I gasped.
"Trent is not a stick in the mud! He's sweet, and kind, and-"
"The dude is like a modern day Elvis."
"Well that 'dude' happens to be my boyfriend!" I defended.
"Oh, so gothy has a boyfriend? Well we just can't have that can we?"
"Who are you to tell me what to do?!"
And that's how it started, for the rest of the period we just kept talking about the randomest of subjects; barely completing any work at all. For a popular kid, he wasn't that bad. When the bell rung, I was actually quite surprised. I guess time flies when you're having fun.
"Heading to chemistry sweetheart?" he questioned grabbing his books.
"Yeah." I smiled.
"Well, let's go then madam." he said putting on a fake British accent and taking my arm in his as you would see in an old Victorian movie. I giggled. I never really noticed how funny Duncan was.
"Yes sir, come along now." I said, mimicking his actions. We walked into Chemisty together cracking jokes along the way. The class pretty much went the same way as our last class. When it was over, I felt so happy! Lion's Den, here I come!? Just as I was about to walk out of the classroom, Duncan grabbed me by the arm and turned me around to face him.
"We should do this again sometime Gwen." he smiled at me. I smiled back.
"I'd like that."
"Cool."
The last thing I thought before exiting the classroom was,
"Maybe I should give this guy a chance."
