Maddy's POV
Run.
The word echoed around my head.
I could hear the heavy footfalls of a male wolf behind me - and no ordinary wolf.
A werewolf.
Bryn was right, and you were stupid.
I knew I should never have left the pack, the Wayfarer, but after Bryn killed Lucas, I just couldn't stand to be there any more. Couldn't stand to have her as my Alpha.
Objectively, I knew it was Lucas's fault. He challenged Bryn - and a challenge to the Alpha must always be met in a fight to the death.
And now you are alone, Madison, alone as always.
I tried to ignore my mental voice and focus on getting away from my persuer.
Bryn had been right about what she'd said before I left - as a lone wolf, I wouldn't belong to nobody; anybody could claim me.
Any male could claim me - for or against my will.
Let me explain: Female werewolves are rare - rare enough that no male would mind forcing me into the role of his mate.
I'd tried to stick to No-Man's-Land, small pieces of land that were so small and worthless at fighting over that the Alpha's had a gentlemen's agreement to leave them alone - but there was one thing I had forgotten.
Other wolves like me lived in No-Man's-Land - wolves who tried to avoid Alpha's.
Rabids.
The word sent a shiver of fear down my spine. I had been born human - then when I was, like, six, a Rabid werewolf had attacked me, turned me against my will, and made me a part of his sick little 'Pack'. And, yes, you should pay attention to the quotation marks.
Bryn was only human, but less than a year ago, she'd been the one who rescued me and all the others from the clutches of Wilson the Rabid.
And now there was another Rabid on my trail, and there was no Bryn there to save me.
I was on my own.
The wolf chasing me finally had enough of simply having me run - and pounced.
I gasped, and waited for his claws and teeth to cut through my skin, for him to claim me, mark me, take me as his own.
But instead, he shifted back to human form and rolled me over.
I opened my eyes so I could have a glimpse at his face, and gasped at what I saw.
Lucas.

The sun fell on Amber's face and she woke up by the heat of it. She rubbed her eyes, trying to orientate, as she saw a man sitting next to her. He looked familiar. As she tried to recall she felt an insistent pain in her neck. She lay her hand on it, to see what it was.
"I bit you, that's why you're in pain" Stefan explained. Amber looked at him. "Who are you?" she asked, crawling backwards. Stefan reached out his hand. "I'm here to help you" he said softly.
Amber shook her head. "No, stay away from me!" she said terrified. Stefan didn't move an inch. "You need help. You're in transition, it's not a nice feeling if you don't feed anytime soon. I bet you're starving" he said.
Amber shook her head heavily as her stomach rattled. "I'm going home" she said with a breaking voice. "Leave me alone!" She scribbled up and staggered away from Stefan.
