His eyes flick up, every now and then, simply watching her.
She teases him, twirling a bit of hair around on her fingers where he can see it.
He wants to grab it, desperately, but his teacher will see, and his teacher hates flirting. Of any kind.
Twenty years later, he is in the same predicament.
Except now, she isn't twirling her hair or biting her freshly painted nails.
She's aiming a gun directly at a killer, telling him to get up and put his hands behind his head.
Normally he'd be watching her from behind...
If he weren't lying underneath another guy.
So he appreciates the view from below.
Her mocha hair falling around her face, brown eyes deliciously firey, she is telling the guy on top of him to get up.
The only problem?
The guy is keeping Tony alive.
Tony has been shot in the worst place possible- just missing his stomach but in a place to lose a lot of blood.
The killer shot at Ziva while her back was turned.
Tony stepped in the way.
The killer's “accomplice,” sees and sits on Tony to keep his blood in.
Keeping the agent alive is more important than getting killed himself.
But Ziva does not know this.
She is calling 9-1-1, saying she has an uncooperative suspect, when in reality she needs an ambulance.
Tony tries to yell this.
She does not understand.
He apologizes before his eyes shut and he sinks into blackness.
Because even an overweight Marine can't keep a person alive for long.
The moment his eyes close, the moment the suspect begins yelling at her, that's the moment when she understands.
She frantically dials 9-1-1, asks for an ambulance.
Already the man cannot feel a steady heartbeat, cannot feel Tony breathing.
The ambulance arrives in record time, but Ziva is still crying.
They restart his heart.
Still she cries.
It should be her.
It should be her.
Even when she receives the news, she still has silent tears running down her face.
It should still be her.
Even when Tony calls her in, tells her it's not her fault, she still has tears running down her face.

Tony knows.
Tony always knows.
They're prepping him for surgery, but he still pulls her in for a passionate kiss.
It shouldn't be her.
Better him than her.
He can't stand to see her cry.

When he does, he limps immediately to NCIS and surprises them all.
Abby, happiness and relief that he's alive.
McGee, total wonderment over how he survived.
Ziva simply kisses him, tears running down her face.
Gibbs wonders why this hadn't happened sooner.
Later, Ziva asks him why he did what he did, what he was thinking.
Tony's response?
Anyone but her.
He pulls her in for another kiss.
It shouldn't have been her.
That kiss makes her realise that.
