It seemed as if everything went quieter when Alex and Iris sat down, I could see we were all tensed and hopeful. Although it didn’t seem Iris had gotten over her anger of us how she never said a word and just frowned at her tray unless Alex was saying something to her.
What irked me was that when Alex would talk to Iris, you could tell it was really important by the way they looked, but the geniuses had the conversations between the two in different languages. One minute there speaking what I assume is Spanish, the next they switch to Italian, or French.
I would try to catch snippets I probably would understand, but they could speak so fast and fluent that I was lost. When the bell rung we all stood up and threw our food away, since Iris and I shared the next class I decided to follow the path she was walking.
Iris glanced at me. “What are you doing?”
I looked at her, confused. “Following you, we have the same class next, remember?”
Iris pursed her lips, looking straight ahead. “Your not going the right way then.”
“So your basically skipping.” I say, looking at her. “Why Iris?”
“I just want to be alone, not be in a classroom full of nosy boring people trying to get my work done when I could be getting a nice nap.”
When I don’t leave Iris looks at me. “Your missing class.”
“So are you,” I say, still following her.
Iris sighs. “Why can’t you at least let me have some peace, you know, alone.”
“The last thing we need is for you to be alone while were at school, something could happen.”
“Like at the park,” she shot back.
“Iris! Please! We didn’t know…or maybe we did, we just wanted answers, and we still do. That place, it was probably oozing with power!”
“We didn’t need power Abe! That’s what I’m trying to say, we didn’t need to go to some deserted place. We could’ve examined it in the car! At our beach! At home! It wouldn’t have made a difference. If something happened, something happened.”
“Iris-”
“You guys should’ve known it the moment we opened that book! I did! Of course we can’t outrun trouble, but we can defeat it. With that book, but you had to not listen and go to an obviously haunted/cursed place.”
“I’m sorry, okay! Look I care about you, a lot! And if I had known that might’ve happened, I’d personally lock you in a room to keep you far away from that! We all would! But were not wise, smart yes, but wise. Were just kids! We shouldn’t have this much pressure on our shoulders!”
Iris stared at me silently, not saying anything.
I sighed. “Iris, we love you. I love you. Were not going to let anything happen to you, and it would kill me if it did. I’m sorry.”
Iris looked down at her feet, “doesn’t mean it’s so easy to forget, I forgive you guys. But you hurt me, just give me some time, please.”
“Just stay with us, stop ignoring us. Give us a chance.”
Iris looked at me, “forgiving and forgetting, a thing I must get used to, but being angry at you guys is a whole different category.”
“So…”
“I forgive you guys, but it’s going to be hard to hang out and whatever, I just…don’t want anything to do with that stone, leave me out of it. You can tell me, if you want me to hide it in my house whatever, but group sessions with it, whether studying or blah, don’t count me in, I’ll stay home for that.”
I nod. “Of course, so…that means were okay?”
Iris rolled her eyes. “I just said that I forgave you guys, smart one.”
I smiled slightly, shaking my head. “I meant you and me, are we okay?”
Iris looked up at me, surprised, her cheeks pinkening a bit. “Yeah, were totally okay.”
I smiled, “good.”
I held out my hand and she, after looking at it doubtfully with slightly red cheeks took it, and we walked away.
From the suffocating school.
From the ties.
From the popularity.
From the stress.

It's sad
It's the truth
Fighting through what it is
But I'll be stronger
I've gone through
Mounds of pain
I've been through
The deepest waters
Nobody can change my past
It's the truth, and it changed me
Sad to even hear the truth
Sad to...say the truth
Reality's always sad
And no one's gonna escape it.
It's how I became who I am today
It's how I didn't brag.
Why does this have to happen?
Why did it have to end?
Why does the world have to be so confusing?
Why did the fun have to end?
The world's just a crazy place
And no one's gonna stop that thought
Cause I'm broken for good...
Because of...the truth.
It's the truth
Fighting through what it is
But I'll be stronger
I've gone through
Mounds of pain
I've been through
