About some time ago back in the year 2010, I remember walking into this one store, that sold Xbox 360 games for ten bucks. Clearly we were dealing with bargain bin games. From what I’ve learned, bargain bin games are the worst games you can get. However, from what I’ve been told, that is a load of crap. Bargain bin games are kinda like a mine. Sometimes, you’ll find useless crap, but other times, you may just strike gold at the bottom. Seriously, they were selling Brutal Legend in those bins. That’s how underrated that game is. But, we’re not here to talk about that. We’re here to talk about another game. That game is Rock of the Dead.
Rock of the Dead is a game developed by Epicenter Studios, who made…………………….. The game was published by Conspiracy Entertainment and UFO Interactive, who both worked on………………. Ninjabread Man…….. Wait, that’s not a good example. Anyway, the game follows a young man, named only The Dude, who plays guitar when suddenly, a meteor crashes into earth, which brings the dead to life. Soon, he finds out that his guitar is able to destroy the zombies, so he goes across the small town, fighting zombies with his guitar. Sure, it may sound stupid…. Because it is. But, granted, it’s a stupid idea that some people can have fun with.
The characters you play as in this game, you’d expect to be the developers themselves. However, shockingly, the two major characters in the game are actually voiced by Neil Patrick Harris and Felicia Day. It’s shocking to see these two get put into a game like this, especially with how the game looks, it clearly shows this game didn’t have much of a budget. The script also manages to have some good humor in it as well. I would never expect a game to be this good with it’s humor. Now, the writing may be good. How about the gameplay?
Well, surprisingly, the gameplay is the game’s weakest part. It shouldn’t be hard to recreate Guitar Hero or Rock Band and just use it to kill enemies, right? Well, yes, they do manage to let you use a guitar, but most of the time, it’s hard to press the notes, when zombies try to Zurg rush you. It’s easy to kill them one at a time, but most of the time, they come at you at once, and it gets pretty annoying at times. But, if you’re playing with a controller, you can just smash your thumb on all the buttons at once and kill everything on screen. Unless there’s just one zombie that requires you to play a solo to kill them. These solos range from songs such as… usually just a bunch of rock remixes of classical songs. And other times, it’s just Rob Zombie. Why is Rob Zombie the discussion in most of these recent reviews? Anyway, I would have liked to hear some other music by other artists. I’m not saying Rob Zombie is bad, but I’d like some variety with the game’s soundtrack.
So, yeah, this game is pretty mixed. Not bad, but nothing great. I’d give it a try if you’d like to hear some good humor and a stupidly hilarious story. The gameplay is simple, but it’s not terrible. Honestly, this has to be some of the best ten dollars I ever spent. Sure, the game may be simple and look as ugly as a PS1 game, but it’s got some charm to it. Just make the gameplay more fun and add some more music artists to the game. Just saying. Take care.
