When I was 13, I heard the worst news ever.
My best friend had been kid-napped, and murdered.
I couldn't believe it.
As a matter of fact, I didn't.
I yelled and screamed. I kicked. I cried and tried to convince myself that it was all a lie.
I finally cracked and admitted it to myself when the news came on.
And they showed her dead body, lying there.
I missed her.

Two months later...
There was a knock on the door. I got off my bed and went to answer it.
It was the detective.
"Miss Johnson?" "Um.. yes?" "We found out who killed Alyssa." I gasped. "Come in!" He stepped inside. "I am only informing you because Mrs. Carnin told me that you were like family." "I nodded. "There was a questioning before the court trial. The killer admitted." I sniffled. "He also gave this note to the deputy." He handed me a crinkled sheet of paper. My hands shook and as I took it.
Dear family & friends,
Hi guys. I know that this note will be that last thing I write in my earth life.
I just wanted to tell you to go on with your lives. I will always be with you, no matter what. Please don't let this ruin you.
Adam- I love you. So much. I want you to know that there are other girls and I will never ever forget you and I pray you won't forget me. Love you. ♥
Kaytlin- Hi besty (: I love you! Don't forget me. I'll always be with you. I won't forget our mani pedis or our sleepovers/moviedates. Our plan to be besties forever is still in action. Stay beautiful. ♥
I started crying.
Mommy, Daddy & Sierra- Mom & Dad, I learned everything I know from you guys. You brought me up in the perfect way and I know that did the right thing. I love you guys.♥ Please don't tell Sierra about me till' she's 16. I don't want her to be devastated. She should just live her life. She'll know when she needs to. And when you tell her, let her read this part.
Sierra- When I had to change you and feed you, I complained. But I realize now that the short amount of time I had with you was so important. Please, remember that your big sissy is watching over you and loves you. ♥ (:
Granny, Grampy, Mawmaw, Poppy, Aunt Kayhsen, Aunt Melody, Uncle Dominic, and Uncle Matthew- Thanks for being the best family ever. You guys, mom, and dad should know that I love you guys and owe you all I know. I love you sooo much! ♥
I'll always be watching over ya'll. Stay gorgeous. Oh, and put me in something teal, my favorite color.♥ Love you all! ♥♥♥♥♥
Love times infinity,
Alyssa Marie Kayhsen Carnin ♥ (:
I dropped the note and sobbed.

My name is Caroline Abigail Johnson, and I am a kindergarten teacher. When I was 13, my best friend was killed. But she told me not to let that ruin me. And I didn't.
I married a friend of her boyfriend. He is perfect and beautiful and I was she'd been my maid of honor, dressed in yellow like I swore she'd be.
She was watching from Heaven though.
I thank her for the time she spent with me. For the tears she cried with me when my first boyfriend dumped me. When my cat ran away. For the facials at the spa and all the shoes, nail polish, and clothes she lent me. I thank her for the giggles, the tickets to all the Twilight movies, the help with math, for the time she spent with me. I thank her for being there.
I remembered her like she asked. I know she remembered me.

How are the winners determined from the losers? Easy. Whoever gave in first.
And if no one gives in?
Giving in is often easier. But not the desirable choice.
Taylor tapped the glass coated floor. The tiny black droplet that bloomed on her forefinger fell with a soft plink on a triangle of glass below.
Taylor cautiously lifted the shard to the light. There it was. A small stain, barely the size of a pinhead, darkening the glass.
That's all I am. Just a flaw on an otherwise clear surface.
Just a flaw. A mistake that was never meant to be.
"I'm leaving," Taylor muttered to herself, getting back to her feet. She strode towards the corner, vanishing just as soon as the shadow fell over to embrace her slight form.
She closed her eyes and felt the end of her plait, fumbling with it until wove free.
She knew where she was going, if only this once.
But when she got there? She hadn't thought that far.

No sun--no moon!
No morn--no noon!
No dawn--no dusk--no proper time of day--
No sky--no earthly view--
No distance looking blue--
No road--no street--
No "t'other side the way"--
No end to any Row--
No indications where the Crescents go--
No top to any steeple--
No recognitions of familiar people--
No courtesies for showing 'em--
No knowing 'em!
No mail--no post--
No news from any foreign coast--
No park--no ring--no afternoon gentility--
No company--no nobility--
No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease,
No comfortable feel in any member--
No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees,
No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds,
November!
