“Watch it, Loser,” Jeremiah Case shouldered Graceanne Evans out of the way as the three most popular guys of the school paraded down the hallway. Gracie stumbled and would have fallen if her best friend had not been walking beside her.
“ You’re a jerk!” Camera Phillips shouted at Jeremiah as he and his posse were swarmed with people. Only one of the three looked back and Grace’s heart seemed to freeze. Deylin Davis was the hottest guy at Central High. He was the boy all the girls threw themselves at. Or she should say, all the pretty girls did, leaving girls like her with no chance with him what so ever.
“ Hello! Earth to Gracie.” Camie snapped her fingers in front of Gracie’s face and when she blinked, Deylin had all ready disappeared down the hall.
“ Its almost pathetic how you pine after him.” Camie shook her head and pushed her brown hair behind her ear.
“ I don’t pine after him!” Gracie snapped and resumed her trek down the hall toward her advanced English class.
“ I just admire him…From afar.” Gracie added as she plopped into her seat. Camie plunked her bag onto the desk next to her’s and rolled her eyes.
“ You keep telling yourself that.” She burst into a fit of laughter.
“ What?” Gracie looked at her, exasperated.
“ Your face! You’re so hopelessly in love with him its funny.” She cracked up some more and Gracie glared. Gracie pressed lips together until finally she couldn’t hold back a laugh from escaping.
“ You’re right. I try to forget him. I really do.” Gracie suddenly was serious.
“Oh I know.” Camie got a far away look on her face.
Gracie focused on her. Maybe she wasn’t the only one pining after someone.
Gracie sighed and tried to pay attention to her teacher. Usually it wasn’t hard, but since she saw Deylin this morning, his face was the only thing that kept running through her mind.
Being half Italian and half of some other nationality left Deylin a gorgeous golden boy. He was darkly tanned, had tawny gold eyes, and blonde hair. He was one of those guys who were muscular, but not that type of “ I live in the gym” type of buff. Gracie was around five foot nine, so her unusual height set her taller than most guys. But Deylin was easily over six foot.
“Gracie!” Camie’s voice snapped Gracie out of picturing Deylin.
“ What?” Gracie looked around. They were the only ones left in class.
“ You better hurry or else you’re gonna miss the bus.” Camie looked over at her, her green eyes sparkling.
“ Oh my goodness!” Gracie jumped up and rushed toward her locker. Her bus was one of the first to leave. Usually she didn’t have to ride it, but her little truck was in the shop. She was almost running by the time she got to her locker hallway. She wasn’t even looking as she rounded the corner. She slammed into something hard and her books went flying. Gracie’s head flew back with a snap and she tumbled backwards to land flat on her back.
“Whoa! You ok?”
Gracie froze and felt her face flush. This was not happening.
Deylin’s tawny eyes peered down at her. He crouched down next to her. Gracie scrambled into a sitting position and starting grabbing her things. This is not how she envisioned making Deylin notice her. But at least Jeremiah and DJ were no where to be seen.
“ Gracie right?”
Gracie glanced up at him for a moment, and determined just to get out of this embarrassing moment, looked for her notebook she was missing.
“ That’s right.” Gracie finally replied. She wished the floor would just swallow her up.
“ Are you looking for this?”
Gracie hesitantly looked up at him. He was holding her purple notebook with the pink flowers all over it. How embarrassing.
“ Yeah, thanks.” She snatched it out of his hands and started to get up. Deylin reached out a hand to steady her, and the light brush of his hand sent a searing heat through her shirt.
She stumbled away from him as soon as she was on her feet.
“ Sorry about that.” Gracie apologized and dusted herself off.
“ Oh its fine.” Deylin stared at her, amusement flickering in his eyes.
Gracie felt her blush grow darker.
“ I uh…Better be going. Or else I’m going to miss my bus.” The words had just left Gracie’s mouth when another bell rung, announcing the departure of the buses.
“ Crap.” Gracie muttered.
A soft chuckle came from Deylin.
“Do you need a ride home?” Deylin smiled.
Gracie had to remind her heart to beat.
“ No its ok.” she answered. There was no way she wanted to him know where she went after school.
“ It would be no problem, really. Jeremiah and DJ have football practice, so I don’t have to take them home.”
Deylin insisted. Gracie just about fell over. Deylin Davis, the hottest guy at school, a junior non the less, was insisting she let him take her home? This had to be some kind of joke. Gracie looked around subtly for hidden cameras.
“ Well, if you’re sure you don’t mind.” Gracie finally answered.
“ I’m positive.” Deylin grinned. “Do you need to go to your locker?”
“ Yeah.” Gracie started to lead the way, when Deylin’s hand briefly touched her lower back. Gracie just about fell over again. Her heart was pounding so hard in her chest, she thought for sure he would be able to hear it. She grabbed her stuff out of her locker, and followed Deylin out to the parking lot. He led the way to his shiny black Escalade.
“ Wow.” Gracie took in the fancy car.
“ It was my sweet sixteen gift.” Deylin supplied as Glory stared. It put her little Ford Ranger to shame.
“ It’s amazing.” Gracie said as they drew nearer.
“ Yeah, I guess. It’s my dad’s poor attempt to be a dad.”
Gracie looked over at him quickly. She was guessing he didn’t have that great of a relationship with his dad.
The sound of high heels on the pavement made Gracie turn.
“Hey Deylin.” Tirzah Thomas purred. Gracie felt her stomach drop. Tirzah was like Deylin, only a girl. She was the most popular girl in school, and the one that all the guys liked. Including Deylin.
“ Hey Tirzah.” Deylin leaned against the side of the Escalade.
“ You didn’t forget about our plans did you?” Tirzah swayed over.
“ How could I?” Deylin’s voice was low, and made Gracie tingle. Until she realized he was talking to Tirzah. The reality that he would never like her hit her like a cold splash of water.
“ Great. Well are you ready to get going?” Tirzah flipped her long black hair over her shoulder. She made quite a show of applying lip gloss and swaying over to the passenger side of the Escalade. Right where Gracie was standing.
“ What are you doing here?” Tirzah snapped as she spotted Gracie.
“ Oh.” Deylin sighed.
Gracie felt her heart start to crack. She should have known this was too good to be true.
“ You know what? Don’t worry about it.” Grace grabbed her stuff and started to walk away.
“ Wait, Gracie!” Deylin called after her.
“ Oh come on, Babe. She can walk.” Tirzah protested.
Gracie’s temper spiked. She almost marched back to Tirzah and gave her a piece of her mind. But she had a little social standing. She didn’t want to completely ruin her social life.
So she just stood there, and watched as Deylin drove off with Tirzah, and her heart seemed to crack a little more.
