Chapter Two
I stared at her, frowning in confusion. Her smile slowly died, and she looked over at Rafe uncertainly. He had been leaning against the wall, looking dangerously good, but he was straightening now, scowling. In two long strides he had covered the distance between us, and grabbed the other girls arm, dragging her a few feet away.
“ What are you doing Jess?” Rafe’s deep voice rasped sexily with emotion. I slid a couple of inches closer, trying to hear their conversation without being too obvious. The girl jabbed a finger into his chest. I grinned. I liked her spirit.
“ Well, I just figured she was since she’s here.” The girl, Jess, spat angrily.
“She doesn’t know about us.” Rafe said quietly, his green eyes snapping.
“ How do you know?” Jess sounded speculative.
“ I just do.” Rafe crossed his arms over his chest and my mouth went dry. Again. This boy just looked too good.
“ Then how do you know she’s one of us?” Jess persisted. Rafe’s voice dropped lower. I tried to lean closer.
“ I shook her hand, and…” His voice trailed off. “ It happened.”
Jess’s mouth dropped open. “ Are you sure?”
His eyes narrowed and he flicked his hair out of his eyes with his fingers.
“Okay, okay.” Jess held her hands up in a gesture of surrender. Rafe’s wide shoulders rose and fell as he sighed. I watched his muscles ripple under his shirt, eyes wide.
“We need to tell Dakota, soon. You know that right?” Jess stated after a moment.
Rafe nodded slowly and ran his fingers through his hair. My fingers curled into fist at my sides, fighting the urge. I wanted to run my fingers through that glorious hair.
“ Yeah. Ever if she isn’t one of us, it still happed.” his voice was so low, I was concerned I imagined his words. His intense eyes rested on me. I turned away quickly, pretending to study the decorations on the wall.
“Just tell the pa-” He stopped quickly and cleared his throat. “ I mean, tell everyone we need to meet. Soon.”
“Ok.” Jess’s voice sounded resigned and her steps echoed down the hall.
“Shayda?”
His voice saying my name made my stomach clench. I glanced up quickly, stunned by his closeness. And how tall he was! His eyes were staring down at me, almost a foot over my head. He was just… gorgeous. His full lips pulled up a little, like he was fighting a smile.
“Are you ready?”
I nodded and watched him turn gracefully, his lean body leading the way down the hall.
“Wait, where are we going?”
“To introduce you to the Elders.” He broke off. “ The principles. I meant principles.”
I glanced over at him, but just said, “okay.”
I stopped trying to make conversation and let my mind wander. What had Jess meant when she asked me if I was “one of them”? And what had Rafe meant when he said it had happened? Was that a good or bad thing? I hadn’t been here very long. A week tops. How could I have done something wrong in such a short time.
I saw Rafe’s large hand coming before I actually felt it. I hadn’t noticed he had stopped before me, but I had kept walking. It settled on my shoulder, sending shock waves down my arm. It felt like the one time I got shocked by our electric fence. Mildly extreme, but sort of pleasant in a weird way.
I jerked, my heart increasing its rapid staccato. Rafe’s eyes were wide and his hand tightened its grip on my shoulder. My breaths were coming quicker and quicker, and I was unable to look away from his gaze. His grip loosened slightly, and I was afraid he might take his hand away. But his hand slid down my arm, gripped my forearm and pulled me closer. His hand was sending a searing warmth through my shirt. I didn’t realize he had pulled me so close, but I was up against his hard chest, the length of our bodies touching.
His chest rumbled beneath my cheek as he sighed. His breath tickled the top of my head. The thought that I had only known him for less than an hour crossed my mind, but I had never felt so safe before in my life, then right now, incased in his strong arms. His powerful body shifted beneath me, and the door behind us creaked open.
“Rafe.”
I stiffened and Rafe stepped back.
“Elder Jacobs.” Rafe’s voice rumbled through his chest, which was still too close for me to think straight.
“ Ah, Shayda. Your mother called us earlier. Please, come in. We have much to discuss.”
I stared at the older man uncertainly. His face was wizened with lines and creases, but his blue eyes were soft.
I glanced up at Rafe, wanting to be reassured. He nodded slowly.
“ I’ll be out here.”
Elder Jacob’s turned around and led the way into the room. I drug my feet following him, feeling oddly cold since Rafe wasn’t with me.
“Come Miss Black. We have much to discuss.” Elder Jacobs called as I trailed behind him.
“What kind of things?” I questioned. He turned and stopped, looking me straight in the eye. His blue eyes hardened.
“ Very serious matters.”
