Professor Hamilton flipped through a bunch of pages in his clipboard before looking at me. "Ah, Jeannette Thomas. How are you doing?"
"Shh!" I hissed, feeling ridiculous.
He laughed. "Oh yes, you are called the Nightfury, am I right?"
"Yes." Great. Now I had to add a mask to my superhero suit.
The professor took a box from the cupboard and opened it. "Batman didn't want to risk exposing your identity, so that's why he assigned me as your doctor."
There it was: the needle. The pointy part in the end shone in the light.
I gulped. "It's just one shot, right?"
He didn't answer. "It won't hurt too bad, Nightfury. Now hold still..." The needle was just a centimeter away from my arm.
You could do this Jenny, just think happy thoughts. I breathed in and out.
I clutched the cot tightly. He's almost done, Jenny. You could do this.
"THINK HAPPY THOUGHTS!!" I yelled, which startled the professor.
"Sorry," I said sheepishly.
I closed my eyes tightly, and I felt a pinch on my arm.
"There," the professor concluded. "Now was that so hard?"
I hopped off the cot. "Not really. Thanks, Professor."
He nodded, then went back to his work.
I breathed a sigh of relief, then headed for the bioship.
"Anybody home?" I called as I stepped into my house.
"JENNY!" screamed my 13-year old sister, Victoria. She pulled me toward the kitchen counter. "What's the answer to this math problem?"
I rolled my eyes. "Figure it out. Where's Dad?"
"He's out on a business trip."
I dropped my bag by the counter and went into livingroom, where my 19-year old brother played his video games.
"Hey," I said as I sat next to him.
"How was the doctor's appointment?"
I showed him the band-aid on my arm. "How do YOU think it went?"
He smiled. "Never mind."
I got bored, so I went to the room I shared with Annaliese, my 16-year old sister.
"...And she was wearing POLYESTER! Could you believe that?" Great, she's hogging the phone.
I shoved her away from my side of the room. "Don't touch my stuff!"
She stuck her tongue out, then went back to her conversation.
Ugh, why did I have to share with the queen of brats?
Anna hung up the phone and looked at me. "Jenny? Your nose is bleeding."
I gasped and ran into the bathroom to see if she was lying.
She wasn't. I quickly cleaned up, but a major headache was forming.
I rubbed my forehead. Now my stomach was hurting. The pain stung me like a wasp, making me numb and unable to move.
I lay on the floor and held my knees to my chest. "It'll go away..." I told myself.
My throat was so dry. I clutched the sink and turned on the faucet, but I started coughing. Little red spots covered the sink and a little of the mirror.
Blood... Blood made me nauseous; even if it was my own.
I fell to the floor, coughing out more blood.
"What's going on in there?!" Anna burst through the door and screamed.
"CHRIS! SOMETHING'S WRONG WITH JEANNETTE!!!"
The last thing I remembered before fainting was the flash of red in Anna's hair.
"Shh!" I hissed, feeling ridiculous.
