Cando and Scar got out of bed and went out. They were only going to stay for one more day, but Scar wanted a longer trip.
“Hey, Cando, I want to have a loner trip. Where should we go?”
“You want a longer one? Well, our trip duration will only be four and a half days.”
They both thought for a little bit. Cando had an idea!
“Sacramento, California!”
“What about it?”
“We can go there for an extended trip.”
“Sounds good!”
Humphrey reported to his squad leader. The four other wolves, Joe, Steve, Jason, and Robert were also there.
“Alright, wolves! Commander Smith will drive! I hope I can rely on you five!”
They approached a Hummer H-2 and they all got in. Adrenaline filled in Humphrey’s body as they drove off. Kate watched her mate leave and felt tears run down her cheeks. What was he going to do? How long would he be gone? Or the worst, would she see him again?
“It’s alright, mom. He’ll be fine.”
“Will we see him again?”
“He’s Humphrey! The Omega easily transformed to Alpha!”
“True.”
Hutch also came to comfort Kate, “If I know my little brother, Humphrey, the only way he’ll die is of old age.”
“Are you sure?”
“He’s my brother, of course.”
Hours passed, and Humphrey and his squad soon arrived in California. There was a base right next to a base. Except one was a human base, and one was a wolf base. They arrived at Francis Enforcement Base, which was the base right next to Travis Air Force Base, which was a human base. Humphrey and his squad got to the briefing room.
“Alright, there will be you five wolves and General Thompson going into that base! This is our mission, keep in mind that two other squads have failed. The two squads never returned. Our mission is to steal a plane from that base. Do you see that big bulky one?”
The wolves looked over at a massive C-5. It was a giant, but slow cargo plane that carried only 50 passengers, but was able to hold multiple tanks and helicopters.
“Yes, that one. One squad didn’t even make it to the plane, and they were captured on sight. The other squad made it to the plane but no one knew how to fly it. We believe that squad was killed. But we have our secret weapon this time. Warrant Officer Humphrey please stand.”
Humphrey was surprised. Was he really that good at operating human machinery? He stood up, “Yes sir!”
“This wolf was the first to ever drive a human vehicle. We figured he would be good for this mission. That is why you are here, officer.”
“It’s an honor, sir.”
“Take tonight to get a good rest. We will meet at the gates of Travis Air Force Base at 11:00 am.”
Humphrey and his squad stayed in the barracks that night. They met at The Air Base, and jumped the gates.
“Stick with our plan,” General Thompson said, “We stay in formation in the bushes.”
There was a sniper they didn’t see that sniped Joe. Joe went down with a bullet hole in his chest.
“Joe! No!”
Robert, the medic of the group, assisted Joe. There were soldiers approaching them.
“Leave me,” Joe said, “You need to complete your mission!”
Robert but Joe on his back, “You’re coming with us. We are not leaving an officer behind.”
Humphrey threw out a flash grenade to blind the soldiers so they could escape, “Cover your eyes!”
The flash bang blinded the soldiers and the wolves ran to the flight line. Jason spotted an SP vehicle.
“Get to cover!”
The SP vehicle passed and they moved into the flight line.
“Aircraft 3405 we’re stealing. God help us get through this,” Thompson said, “You all believe in God, right”
All nodded, “Good!”
A Bobtail truck passed, along with a few tow vehicles. They got to the plane, which had a ladder to it.
“Steve, go in and see if anyone is in there.”
Steve checked the plane and no one was in it, “We’re clear!”
Humphrey got to the flight deck. When he got there, he saw all the controls and buttons he had to press. Even the throttle was different from a car. On a car, to go you have to press on a tall skinny pedal to go and a fat short one to stop. The controls where your feet are is how you turn the plane with the rudder.
“Oh God! Ahh, crap! General, I don’t know what to do.”
“You’re able to drive a car but you can’t fly a plane!?”
“Look at all this crap!”
Thompson came and saw the madness, “Crap! Alright, you managed to get that car going before Garn came to you. Except this time, it’s cops that want to kill you. Think of it that way.”
Humphrey was under too much pressure, “Oh God, I can’t! I…I… I’m under too much pressure!”
Thompson started yelling at Humphrey, “I will kick your ass if you don’t get this plane started! If both of us get out alive I will rip that Warrant Officer badge right off your uniform! I will…”
The words faded away as Humphrey had a flashback of Hutch and Humphrey playing together. Hutch stopped Humphrey and told him his “Words of Wisdom.”
“Humphrey, keep in mind that nothing is impossible. If there are people chasing you, and you have a very tight limit of the to do or where to go, just think that nothing is impossible. You can jump a 20 foot tall wall and escape. I hope these ‘Words of Wisdom’ helps you with a tough situation.”
“I’ll keep that in mind Hutch! Thanks brother!”
The flashback faded away, and the words of the yelling General came crashing in, “Get this plane started or I will tear you arms off and do it for you! Do you hear…”
“Shut up! I need to concentrate!”
Hutch’s words came into his head. Soon he realized what he had to do. He had to flip a switch to turn each engine on individually. All four engines were on, and he clicked another switch to set off the brakes, and pushed the throttle forward the slightest amount to speed the plane to about 25 MPH.
“Is everyone strapped in?”
“Yes!”
Humphrey was on the taxiway but didn’t know where to go, “Do they expect me to take off on this?” He saw a long black strip of concrete. It was the runway! “I must have to take off there.” Humphrey got on it, but when he sped up, it didn’t feel right. “What’s going on? It won’t let me get in the air!”
He saw they were approaching the end of the runway and set the brakes, but the plane wasn’t stopping fast enough, “Oh God! This is bad, what do I do!” Humphrey saw reverse throttles. It said ‘Reverse’ really big there. He pushed it back and slowed it down more, it still wasn’t enough. He saw the last thing, the airbrake. He deployed that, which caused the plane to slow down 25 MPH a second. They hardly missed the end of the runway.
He turned off reverse thrust and the brakes, went around an tried again. There were SP vehicles. He pulled out the manual to see what to do. On the first page, it said to set flaps in order to take off. Humphrey set the flaps, and started going again. This time, he caught air! Thompson came up to the flight deck.
“Good work, officer! I like your style!”
“Thanks! Let’s go land this thing!”
Cando and Scar were arriving into Fairfield, a large town that Travis Air Force Base is in. A C-5, actually the same one Humphrey was flying, flew above.
“I always wanted to know how planes work.”
Humphrey was about to land on an abandoned road the wolves closed off. He landed and every wolf in the base was surrounding the plane, cheering, and yelling in joy.
General Thompson came out, and behind him were Joe, Jason, Robert, and Steve. The wolves were applauding, but Thompson stopped them.
“Don’t applaud to us, applaud to our great Warrant Officer, Humphrey!”
Humphrey showed himself in front of the wolves and they all cheered and applauded. He heard a bunch of brags, “He’s so talented!” “He has so much skill!” “He deserves more than Warrant Officer!” But the most shocking he heard was, “Good job, Humphrey!” in a familiar voice. It was Cando! Humphrey got off the plane and ran to Cando.
“Dude, what are you doing here? Weren’t you in Las Vegas?”
“Nah, Scar just wanted to extend the trip.”
Humphrey smiled. He heard the Colonel of the base call him, “Officer Humphrey!”
“Yes, Colonel!”
“Come here, I need you!”
Humphrey came to the Colonel, “What do you need?”
“I just wanted to congratulate you! Good job man!”
“Thanks Colonel. It’s an honor.”
The day passed, and Cando and Scar were still there. Humphrey could get permission from General Thompson for them to stay with him in the barracks.
“Yo, General Thompson!”
“Hey Humphrey!”
“Can I have a few friends stay with me in my barracks?”
“Why?”
“They have nowhere to go. They didn’t book a hotel.”
“How many beds are available in the barracks?”
“Actually, sir, just one. That’s why I wanted your permission.”
“Yes, they can. Just for this one night though.”
“Thanks, General!”
Humphrey saluted to show respect. He got to Cando and Scar.
“Hey, you two! General Thompson said you could stay in my barracks. Wanna come?”
“Is there privacy?”
“That’s the problem, you can’t romance tonight.”
“Alright, we’ll stay anyway.”
Cando and Scar stayed in the barracks that night.
