It was a sunny Wednesday in Kettle Falls, Washington. The sky was cloudless, the air fresh and clean. It was two days after Kate, Scar, and myself had returned from a vacation that I would never forget as long as I lived. Sure, the destination made it so, but more than that, it was Scar and Kate that made it unforgetable.
I had needed to run to the store for a pickmeup for Scar, who was just now starting to show the weird cravings brought on by her pregnancy. I had been sent to fetch hotdogs, A1 steak sauce (yum), and chives. (Yes, I know that this combination of ingredients creates a delectable hot dog for us humans, but to wolves, it's a very unheardof mix.)
As I pulled into the driveway, I thought of what was coming to us in mid-August. The thought made me smile.

(5:18 P.M.)

"Scar, I'm home with your food!" I called as I walked through the front door. The house was dark and clammy, something that immediately struck me as odd.
"Scar? Kate" I called warily.
I recieved no answer.
I called out again and when again I got no response, I unsnapped my holster and drew my Walther.
The P99's muzzle led the way as I scanned each and every room for any hint of upset or change.

The formal dining room, which was at a glance determined to be empty, was first. I went down the hallway, checking the powder bath, the guest room, the weight room (which is never used), and the normal bathroom all checked off clean.
The livingroom was also empty.
The kitchen, however, contained the slight odor of turkey and swiss cheese.
I nudged open the pantry door and peered into the trash can. Sitting on the top of all the other detrius that Kate, Scar, and I had created over the past day was a freshly made turkey and swiss sandwich with Frank's Hot sauce.
This was curious, but not neccessarily worrying, so I moved on.
The garage was clear, of humans or wolves, that is, but the cars were there as they should have been.

It was upstairs in the master bedroom that I found something that chilled my blood.
Kate was sprawled across the tan carpeted floor, unconscious. The entire left side of her face was coated in crimson red.
"Kate!" I cried, dropping by her side.
I ripped a chunk from my shirt and started gently sponging the blood from her face.
As it came off, the source of it was revealed.
She had sustained a blow to her left cheek with something sharp enough to draw blood.
Kate came around just as I was finishing cleaning her up.
"Kate, what's happened? Where's Scar?" I demanded.
She looked at me through hazy, unfocused eyes.
"Where's who?" she mumbled. Her fur was cold to the touch.
"Scar! Where's Scar!" I almost shrieked, but caught myself.
She just shook her head, confused.

I gingerly picked her up and put her on the bed.
"Stay here, okay?" I told her. "I'm gonna go search the rest of the house." Which admittedly wasn't much.
But my search was to go no further, for in the bathroom was a sheet of plain printer paper, folded twice. On the top fold read "To Colby"
This was odd, but I dismissed the unnatural feeling creeping up my spine, because maybe it was from Scar!
Grinning slightly, I picked up the note. It was heavier than I had expected.
I turned the note upside down and a small, thin disk of metal fell into the sink.
Curious, I picked it up.
It was a tag of the sort Scar wore, with a paw print on the side facing me.
Printed on the other side was:
"Scar
2893 Copperhills Drive
Kettle Falls, Washington
214-843-4090"

A terrible premonition gripped me. I put the tag on the counter and quickly unfolded the note. It was typed. The back of my mind registered that the font was Times New Roman, 12 point.

An eye for an eye,
a nose for a nose.
Your love has been taken,
by someone she knows.

Your first clue is this.
She's somewhere nearby.
It's so easy to miss
where she could hide.

The location is close
to a place that she caught
herself a break
she knew she should not.

If I see any cops,
you know what I'll do.
She'll regret it deeply,
as you will too.

I will call you at twelve,
so I would be ready.
Something will happen,
so I would stay steady.

Signed,
S.K.

Next to the initials was a drop of red. I didn't need any analysis to know that it was Scar's blood.

With each line of this obscene poem that went through my mind, I grew ever more unsteady, despite what the note said.
Clenching it so hard that it would surely be rendered unreadable, I stumbled into the master bedroom.
Kate was asleep, but no longer.
"Kate!" I said, shaking her until she opened her eyes. "Do you remember who Scar is?!"
She nodded.
"Read this!" I said, uncreasing the page and thrusting it before her eyes.
She read it slowly, but her eyes grew more and more focused as she did.
"What the hell? Who is this sick fuck?" she asked angrily. "You should call the cops."
"Did you not read the fourth verse? If they see any hints of cops, they're gonna do something to her!"
She shrugged her shoulders.
I pulled my phone from my pocket and made calls to Rich and Brandon.
As concisely as I could, I summarized the contents of the note for them and listened to them expressing their sympathies and condolences. But I wasn't hearing them.
I was hearing in my mind Scar screaming with pain and fear. The sound, imagined as it was, tore through my heart.
I glanced at the clock. 5:29 P.M. Six and a half hours to go.
Chapter 19
A few hours had past since the howl. Seth slept between Destiny and Kate. Kate rested her arm over Seth and Destiny slept with her nose in Seth’s shoulder. Seth was considered a mate to Kate and Destiny and it was allowed since his Alpha ceremony was first thing in the morning along with Michael’s funeral. Then the group would start home. Seth would arrange a marriage for him and his new mates in secrecy as soon as they got home. Not only would that elongate their week long honeymoon, but they would have the right to have pups. Seth could tell that out of Kate and Destiny, Destiny...

Chapter 9
Kate, Miranda, Lilly and Saphire approached a shining lake with the moon reflecting off of it. The moon illuminated the dew that wet Kate's pads. The trees surrounded the clearing. Kate sat down and like a human, supported her body, with her two front paws, and took one hind paw and dipped her toe into the water. Not cold, or hot, but cool. Refreshing. She was about to get in when she heard a... "Whoo hoo!" Miranda jumped, did a flip in the air and splashed in the water. Lilly laughed and walked into the water. Saphire sat at the edge, leaned down and began to lap the water. Miranda...

One thing I had to do before starting this was fix a small problem that I had created. The timeline has Lilly giving birth a month or so after Humphrey’s supposed death, meaning she would’ve gotten pregnant around the beginning of Missing Parents.

The reason she had to be pregnant during this time was because Jax, Jonas, and Martin had to be roughly the same age as Stinky, Claudette, and Runt, which means they had to be born as soon as possible after Legend. However, it’s very doubtful that Lilly would’ve gotten pregnant in the aftermath of Humphrey’s death as everyone would be taking...

I’m putting chapter seven into its own section here just because of how incredibly long it is, considering this is when Humphrey tells his story of what happened to him during the seventeen years he was gone.

My original plan was to have Steven find a naturally occurring lean-to when the group settles down with Gerald, but then I realized how incredibly unlikely that would be, so I went back to A Hero’s Past and had Viggo’s tent break in the storm, so then he would be forced to make a lean-to and that could be the one they use in The Final War.

I spent a lot of time dreading this chapter...

Chapter 27: A Noble End

Viggo, Humphrey, and Kate were calmly walking through the woods as the sun rose higher into the sky. Humphrey looked over at Kate.

“Are you okay?” he asked.

“Yeah, I’m good,” she replied nervously.

“The symptoms won’t come on for another day or so,” Viggo said, overhearing them. “By the time we’ve concluded our business, Kate will have the antidote.”

Humphrey shot Viggo a dirty look.

“Oh, don’t be like that, Humphrey,” Viggo said. “What did I tell you about ruthlessness?”

“You killed my son and poisoned my wife, Viggo,” Humphrey replied angrily....

Chapter 24: Aftermath

Humphrey slowly walked up to Runt’s lifeless body and laid down next to it, setting his head down on top of his son’s body and slowly beginning to cry. Humphrey simply laid there, not moving, remaining with Runt long after his eyes had gone dry, entirely consumed by his grief. Even after everyone else had had their time and left, even as night fell, Humphrey still continued to stay with Runt.

The sun rose the next day and as Kate headed out toward the valley, her heart was crushed to see Humphrey still laying there.

“Has he really been out there all night?” Adam asked....

Chapter 22: The Great Gathering

Steven and Kenya arrived at the Protectors’ pack a few hours later and dropped off the pups of the Western Pack. Steven looked at his son, Luke, who was making friends with a female pup.

“Oh, I get it,” Steven said, smiling, “my son has a way with the ladies. He must’ve picked up a few pointers from his father.”

“I doubt it,” Kenya replied. “She’s not dry heaving.”

They approached Mort and asked him for help against Viggo. Mort gladly agreed, taking half of the Protectors with him and leaving Darren to lead while...

Chapter 21: The Lost Pup

As Viggo raised the sword above his head, he became aware of someone standing behind him.

“I wouldn’t do that if I were you,” Kate growled.

Humphrey turned around at hearing Kate’s voice and jumped when he saw the sword raised threateningly above him.

“Whoa! What the-“ he exclaimed.

“Kate,” Viggo said. “It’s good to see you again so soon, but I’m afraid your efforts are too little, too late.”

“I don’t think so,” Kate continued growling. “Now drop it.”

Viggo suddenly grabbed Humphrey by the back of his neck and pinned him under his elbow, holding...

Chapter 14: A Simple Misunderstanding

The group was led into a den and several wolves remained at the entrance to guard them. Humphrey and the others gathered in the back and quietly began to discuss their next move. Humphrey wasn’t participating much, and Kate took notice.

“Humphrey?” she asked. “Are you okay?”

“Not exactly,” Humphrey replied. “He knew this would happen.”

“Who?”

“Viggo. When he gave me this mark, he told me it would cause problems for me in the future,” Humphrey said. “He didn’t just use it to remind me of him. He knew he was going to use it to turn...

Eight years had passed since anyone had seen Viggo and while he was still on their minds, they weren’t as tense about it. One day, in late autumn, Humphrey was out wandering in the woods when he suddenly felt a sharp, stinging pain in his side that burned like fire. He collapsed to the ground, yelling in pain. When he looked at his side, he was surprised to see an arrow sticking out of it. He looked up and noticed Viggo not far away, grinning.

“Such a beautiful weapon isn’t it?” he said looking at his bow. “The deadliest things often are. Take your viper friend for example. Gorgeous...

Humphrey woke up in a strange place. As he opened his eyes and looked around, he couldn’t figure out where he was. He couldn’t even remember how he had gotten here. The place was fairly large, but enclosed. There were various weird items sitting all around him and he was laying on something soft and fuzzy. Slowly, it all came back to him. It was a little less than a month ago when he, along with Kate, his pups, Garth, Lilly, Daria, Marcel, and Paddy had set out to find his parents.

After finding out they were dead, the group had learned that the valley had been taken over by the Rogue Wolves...

Chapter 1: A New Beginning

The sound of howling wolves filled the air once more. Stinky and Runt rushed to the edge of the valley.

“They’re back!” Runt exclaimed.

“I told you this victory was too easy,” Stinky replied. “We should never have sent Claudette and the others back for the caribou.”

“It wasn’t my idea to send her back.”

“Could you two stop arguing so I can kill something?” Mick shouted at them. “You’re really starting to bug me.”

“Alright, everyone,” Stinky said to the wolves behind him. “Second wave incoming.”

Runt slid down from a tree as a group of...

I didn’t include any characters from the sequels because (1) there are way too many to count and (2) there are so many bad characters that it’d be hard to rank. Also I know there’s no actual evil character in the original.

Chapter 16: A Legend is Born

It was a calm day in Jasper Park. The sun was shining and the morning was just beginning. Kate was sleeping in the den with Runt, Stinky, and Claudette. A cool morning breeze blew through the cave entrance and woke her. She lifted her head and turned to wish her husband, Humphrey, a good morning. But all she saw was an empty space next to her, and then she remembered what had happened the day before. The battle, the General. And Humphrey. She would give anything just to spend one more day with him. All she wanted was to have Humphrey back. But no amount of hoping...

Chapter 12: A Bond Long Forgotten

The human slowly approached Humphrey and Kenya, although Kenya was the only one he really noticed. As he got closer he recognized her as his lost dog. The man slowly lowered his gun to the ground and began calling her over.

Humphrey was preoccupied at the moment, but when he heard the human calling to his sister, he turned around and when he saw the human approaching his younger sister, he became angry and afraid for her at the same time. Humphrey rushed towards them and leaped in between the human and his sister. The fur on his back stood up, bristled, his teeth...
