Chapter 3: Rest and Relaxation

Later that day, as Mick and Oscar began to get awkwardly acquainted with each other, Jax, Jonas, and Martin set out for a short patrol around the border. As they returned, everyone noticed a terrible stench in the air.

“What is that smell?” Martin asked, trying not to cough in disgust.

“Hey, Steven,” Jax said casually, paying no attention to the awful odor in the air, “it kinda smells like the trail to your den after you brought that rotten carcass home last year.”

“Hey, back off!” Steven replied, defensively. “It wasn’t me. And that was a very trying time, by the way. We were having trouble finding food to begin with. Do you think I had much choice?”

“True,” Jax said, “but that still doesn’t excuse you stinking up half the pack for a month.”

“Well, you know what I always say,” Jonas chimed in, “he who hath smelt, hath dealt it.”

“Indeed. You always had such a way with words,” Jax replied.

“What are you two talking about?” Martin asked, confused. “I’ve literally never heard you say that.”

“Well, just because you’ve never heard us say it, doesn’t mean it never happened,” Jonas said.

“Agreed,” Jax replied. “I mean, if a tree falls in the woods and no one’s around, does it make any noise?”

“Good point,” Jonas said.

“It isn’t me!” Steven exclaimed.

At that moment, Mick came walking past. The smell only got stronger.

“Oh, god!” Steven exclaimed, coughing. “Mick, is that you?”

“Is what me?” Mick asked, obliviously.

“That smell.”

“What smell?”

“How often do you bathe?” Martin asked.

“Once a month,” Mick said, smiling, “and I’m proud of it.”

He looked around at everyone and the looks they were giving him.

“Fine,” he sighed, “I’m going.”

Meanwhile, back at Viggo’s campsite, Robert and Viggo were busy relaxing and catching up, as it had been a long time since they had last seen each other. The two were sitting in lawn chairs outside of Viggo’s tent, both with drinks in hand and casually talking as if nothing was wrong, like they were regular people having a friendly chat rather than two relentless wolf hunters out to destroy a pack.

Viggo mainly stayed silent, hardly telling Robert anything about why he was so obsessed with the Western Pack and always managed to avoid saying anything whenever Robert brought it up. Instead, he asked Robert how he had been doing and what he had been up to since they had last seen each other.

“Well,” Robert said, “not long after you left and began plotting and scheming or whatever it is that you do out here, I continued my hunting work as much as I could while also maintaining control over the Crimson Pack. While they were out on missions, I would sometimes go out myself and do some recreational hunting. And sometimes, I would make it challenging and more fun for myself and leave my rifle behind so I could hunt with my bare hands.”

“Well then,” Viggo said, raising his eyebrows and looking genuinely impressed, “it seems you have more skill in the forest than I gave you credit for, my old friend. I had no idea you were so near my level of skill when it came to hunting. Any man you can kill a wolf with their bare hands is a skilled hunter indeed.”

Viggo raised his glass in a suggestive toast. Robert raised his as well.

“Here’s to friendship and victory,” Viggo declared.

“To victory and friendship,” Robert replied and the two took a drink from their glasses and continued their friendly conversation.

Rest and relaxation were a luxury they didn’t have much of nowadays and as eager as they were to destroy the Western Pack, they were glad to get as much of it as they could before the war truly began.

Chapter 12: Truce?

A few weeks passed without any encounters with Viggo. Viper had been traveling back and forth between the ruins of the Central Pack and the valley to spy on Viggo. She hadn’t been able to stick around for long because like Kenya had said, her vibrant colors caused her to stand out more than she would’ve liked and Viggo was dangerously aware of his surroundings. From what little she could find out, she knew that Viggo was planning something big, but she didn’t know exactly what since she couldn’t read maps or writing.

One night, Kenya was out on patrol. She was walking...

Chapter 5: Old Frenemies

The sun rose in the valley the next day. By then, Viggo and his men had begun to once again make themselves at home. Some of the Crimson Pack had been put on border patrol, others were guarding the western wolves with some of Viggo’s men in the western area of the territory.

By midday, Robert arrived, along with some more men and supplies from the base in the Northern Region. As the men began setting up, Robert approached Viggo.

"Well,” he said, “where are they?”

“Where do you think?” Viggo asked casually. “They’re gone.”

“You mean they escaped? Again?”...

Chapter 3: Into the Walls of Fire

Humphrey called for a pack meeting, not even caring about the fact that he didn’t have the authority to do so, and immediately began briefing everyone on the plan to get Kenya back.

“Okay,” he said, “Viggo is most likely taking her to his main campsite, deep in the Northern Pack. We’ll take a group of around ten wolves to go rescue her.”

“So,” Claudette said, “who’s going?”

“Kate and myself,” Humphrey replied, “plus Adam and Steven, along with Stinky and Runt and Jax and Jonas. Mick and Oscar are coming too.”

“Now you’re talking,”...

Chapter 7: The Second Battle of Jasper Park

Viggo and Robert had made themselves at home in the Western Pack. His men had long since settled in, with Viggo turning Kate and Humphrey’s old den into his own personal abode.

As Viggo and Robert were heading back up to the den, they passed by two men playing a simple game of chess. Robert looked at them with annoyance as he walked by.

“Chess,” he said with a hint of disgust, “childish nonsense.”

“Never any good at it?” Viggo asked, smiling a bit.

“Why kill pieces of marble when you can kill wolves instead?” Robert asked casually.

“Explaining...

Chapter 19: Wolf Fight

Back at the sandstone cliffs, many, many years later, Adam had become a great leader. One of the greatest in the region, in fact. He was almost a fully grown wolf, just entering his twenties. He had led the pack for eleven years and things had been fairly peaceful since Steven left and the dens were complete.

But all of that changed one day when word began to spread of a human who had recently gone on a killing spree throughout Canada. However, he hadn’t been killing other humans. He had been killing wolves, wiping out entire packs. The only name he was known by was “The...

Chapter 3: Omega Hostage

Upon their return to Jasper, the group, now composed of Kyle's pack, hid just behind the tree-line, out of sight of King and his Rouge Wolves. Or so they thought.

As they were talking amongst themselves, trying to figure out what to do, a group of Rouge Wolves came out from nowhere and attacked the group. In the chaos, a smaller group came out from behind the bushes and kidnapped Humphrey, taking him hostage.

"Kate!" he shouted as he was being dragged away. Kate turned to see him being carried off. She went to go after him but was stopped by the Rouges. Their numbers...

Chapter 3: At the Edges of the Territory

It was early morning the next day, and everyone was up and getting ready to go on their journey.
"You don't have to do this, you know," Kate said to Humphrey as they were about to leave.
"Yes, I do, Kate. I have to do this," Humphrey said. "I have to know the truth."
"Okay," she said. "I'm with you either way."
It was around this time that Garth and Lilly arrived at the den.
    "We're ready," Garth said.
    "As...

Chapter 1: Humphrey's Flashbacks

It was a calm day in Jasper Park. It was Father's Day and Kate had everyone over to help her with her father's gift. Winston, Eve, and Tony would soon be arriving, and she needed all the help she could get. Her sister, Lilly had come, along with her husband, Garth. Kate's husband, Humphrey, was also helping by watching their pups to make sure they stayed out of trouble.

"Humphrey," Kate...
