What are the factors that make a animated movie a good animated movie? Alpha and Omega is one of the finest examples of a animated movie gone 100% right. Lionsgate and Crest Animation did one heck of a job creating Alpha and Omega. In these troubled times everything revolves around a slim budget and meeting the goals intended for it. A&O in my opinion is one of the greatest wolf Romeo and Juliet-style pictures that I have seen in a long time. The characters, all of them mind you, had a unique personality of their own. Kate and Humphrey were of course the center of the action but Tony, Winston, Eve, Garth, Lilly, Can-do, Hutch, Shakey, Salty, Mooch, the vegan wolves, and any others I may not have mentioned all had great roles in the movie. Marcel and Paddy were truly unique in their own way, although somewhat annoying they were quite funny. Interrupting Kate and Humphrey's little nosy-nosy in the trunk of a tree the night after the flood. The train scene where Kate is sleeping and Paddy comments on her looking beautiful while she's sleeping was cute. Then lastly the scene where the two are introducing Tony and Winston to golfing at the end. Now on to the adventure with our two main characters Kate and Humphrey
We see them at the beginning as very young wolves less than a year old I would guess. They are soaring through the air and they spot one another and join paws and exchange a brief conversation about lunch in Humphrey's stomach, to Kate's discomfort he ends up having to swallow it down. Then the conversation with Winston to Humphrey explaining why alphas and omegas can't "howl" together, he then goes on to explain about how she will be a trained alpha by spring. Jump ahead a winter passes and we see Jasper green in the spring. At first Humphrey and his trio of omega friends are attempting the tobogganing down the mountain where all is well until they discover the lack of brakes has a way of coming back and biting them in the butt, literally Mooch did good playing that role! Jump ahead to Kate's first hunt with the caribou. There is a dangerous stampede involving her saving two wolves from the eastern pack and thanks to the Omegas who prevented a dangerous fight between the two hunting parties. Humphrey's performance there was really sweet! He really is a cute character. Shortly thereafter we see the scene with Tony and Winston and Kate is informed about marrying Garth, to her bewilderment she accepts to meet him at the moonlight howl. Meanwhile our band of Omegas are planning on trying to court a few female omega wolfs on the climb up to the howling rock. Salty was really awesome here! I could see so much of me in that image! Humphrey intends to show him up on the next pair of female wolves to come up. To his astonishment it turns out to be Kate and Lilly, whom spot Garth standing on top of a howling rock, and are shocked to see how stunning he is standing framed with the moon. Humphrey ends up in a tree and falls right in front of Kate and Lilly as they are talking with Garth. He begins to kick up dust and swish his tail in Garth's face pretending not to know he is there. Kate is mad and shoves him off with Lilly and joins Garth at the top of the howling rock in which he stood previously. She is momentarily charmed by him but upon hearing his howl she finds a excuse to leave him to get a "drink of water". She is spooked by Humphrey who seems to have enjoyed catching her off guard at a pool of water. Kate has little time to get mad at Humphrey when she is struck in the rear by a tranquilizer dart. She goes into a trance and gets into a intimate mood exclaiming that Humphrey is cute and yada yada. He is struck by the next dart and he too joins in the trance with Kate by salivating over her and she bats the long strand of saliva with her paw. Soon they are passed out on each other and we see the human rangers coming in the picture to pack them up and take them off to Sawtooth park. The two wake up in crates after Garth and the rest of the packs discover Kate gone missing and Tony getting a little upset with Winston.
Kate is doing her best to get out of the crate that she is in next to Humphrey. Once the rangers set them free they set off and discover that they are no longer in Jasper; we then are introduced to Paddy and Marcel where Humphrey learns a little bit about the downside of having equipment down there. That part was pretty funny and Kate's reaction to Humphrey being a goofy omega who just wants to have fun. They are shortly informed that they have been transported here to repopulate the area with baby wolves and now more than ever Kate wants to go home to Jasper. Next Marcel and Paddy have arranged a ride back to Jasper in a black Dodge with a camper on the back, they narrowly escape being seen by the driver and his wife and scramble into the back as it takes off with some type of nitro gas that shoots out yellow flames. What follows is Humphrey trying to entertain Kate by dressing up in some kind of hippie outfit and dancing around the small camper. Kate falls asleep only to wake up in a wig, bra and sunglasses, they have stopped at a gas station. After shaking the garments from her she notices Humphrey cowed down by the door with his paws between his legs; he then explains his circumstances and insists on going outside to go, to Kate's advise of no he exists the camper to go do his business. Kate watches him and to my astonishment Humphrey is discouraged at her watching him go so she turns and all the while Humphrey finds a cupcake and goes about eating it but appears to be frothing at the mouth. The backdoor opens and the storekeeper comes out with a bag of trash and notices the wolf by the dumpster, who appears to be rabid. A gun is brought into the picture by another man in the store and Kate saves Humphrey being blown to bits and they escape to the hills where it begins to thunder and rain outside. Upset about losing her ride, Kate ditches Humphrey and goes about trying to find her way home, she does not really notice that the rain is now torrential and a flash flood has occurred in a valley that she needs to cross. She attempts the jump but mistakes the grade of the wall on the other side and starts to slide toward the gushing river of broken trees and debris below. She is about to slide all the way to her ultimate death but Humphrey to the rescue! He swings in on a vine and Kate takes her alpha jaws and grabs his tail and is swung to safety where the two finally decide to bed down for the night. They wake in the morning having a nose-to-nose entanglement in the cave in which they are staying in, Humphrey is all for this but Kate immediately pushes away and leaves the cave to find that Marcel and Paddy have been golfing rocks at them. Kate and Humphrey are now fully rested and no longer upset about the previous night's actions. Kate asks Marcel to point them the way home over a very tall, snowy mountain that supposedly has a train somewhere on the other side that passes through Jasper. They trek off in that direction and race to the top where they have a snowball fight, "Omega one, Alpha zero!" Humphrey exclaims after having thrown a snowball and pegging Kate on the back. Kate forgetting her alpha nature kicks up snow with her hind legs and buries Humphrey on the side of a rock ledge. They continue to run about and play all the rest of the way up the mountain and Humphrey finds a young bear cub whom he begins to play with as Kate has run to the very top of the mountain to see if she can spot the train somewhere down the other side. He throws a snowball at the cub, accidentally pegging it in the face and upsetting the mama bear and she chases Humphrey who is calling out to Kate to come save him. He plows into her halfway to the top and she asks "what's wrong with you?" he points at mama bear "that!" Mama bear has now rallied up two more bigger bears and they are ferociously growling and swiping their paws at the two very small wolves in comparison. They battle their way out and end up sliding down the mountain on a hollowed out piece of tree bark, Humphrey teaches Kate how to toboggan down the mountain and they miraculously end up on the train that happens to be passing by. Now safe on the train home they share some of the most critical moments that prove they have fallen in love. Humphrey says they make a pretty good team and Kate says she thinks he's crazy, but the passion of love that sweeps over her face in that scene was enough to convince me that she was in love with Humphrey. They howl together after Humphrey begins the cue while passing the moon, they both have beautiful howls and that alone is what made me love this movie so much.
After the howl we see tensions mounting between the eastern pack and western pack whom all are now ready to fight for what is rightfully theirs.
Back to Kate and Humphrey who now are asleep in the train car. Humphrey wakes to find Marcel and Paddy flying along beside the train and they exchange a conversation about love and nearly wake Kate when the two birds have their share in bouncing off objects going past the train. They then inform Humphrey that Jasper is fast approaching and that they better prepare to depart the train soon. Humphrey wakes Kate and they are about to share each others feelings for one another when Kate looks out of the rail car to see the two packs in a viscous fight. Humphrey is about to tell her he loves her when she jumps from the train and runs toward the fight. You should know what result so lets get back to Kate and Humphrey.
Humphrey is really upset that Kate has agreed to marry Garth who by this time is in love with Lilly. He intends to leave Jasper and everything he ever loved behind him to try and start off a whole new life elsewhere. He is leaving when a deadly stampede once again has erupted in the valley and sends Tony and Winston on a run for their lives. He is running down the side of a valley wall when he crosses ways with Kate who is over-relived to see him there and he suggests they grab a toboggan and go for another ride down the slope, this time to save the lives of the two packs leaders. They succeed in their mission and Kate tells Humphrey "I told you we make a good team!" He responds but in a split second a caribou tramples over Kate and she is instantly feared dead when the dust settles after Tony and Winston have scared the remaining caribou around the logs. Humphrey looks down at Kate, her eyes are closed, her body appears to be broken, he nudges her and she won't move at all. With a horrifying look of regret and realization on his face he sits down and beings to howl at the empty blue sky and all the other wolves join in with him, fearing that the next great alpha is gone forever; golden light streams across the ground and Kate wakes while Humphrey and the others are still howling in tribute. She looks around, shaken and bewildered and manages to utter "Humphrey?" in her very soft, beautiful voice, Humphrey looks down at her, "why are they all looking at us?" They then pass their vows for one another in front of all the wolves in Jasper and prove that alphas and omegas can be together in harmony. Garth admits his affection that he developed for Lilly and the movie ends with all the wolves at the howling rock. Humphrey and Kate, now the leaders of the pack are on the top of the tallest howling rock and together with all the other wolves they make the most beautiful sound I've ever heard in a very long time. The camera lifts to the sky and we see the moon and deep blue sky and the end credits begin. Whoever the critic was that said this movie was the worst animated movie in the world did not know what he missed in Alpha and Omega. This movie easily deserves a solid 10x1000 in my opinion! Sorry if I missed a lot of little details but my laptop is nothing like my computer back home and I cannot type like I normally do there, the keys are too small and too close together, I hate that about laptops!
