It took us a day and a have to reach the cave in which Mephistopheles was hurt. The pack would be pissed I was gone, but they could burn in hell. I had to see my friend before he left this plane of existance.
Kelly touched her nose to my shoulder as we stood at the entrance to the cave.
She had decided to come even though I told her she shouldnt, but she wouldnt listen.
I nodded, took a deep breath, and entered the cave.
I smelled awful, like decay, blood, and feces.
I shook my head and continued further into the cave.
He spotted me first as I failed to see him lying in a corner.
"Thou on high,dost thou come to pity one that has fallen from the graces of our lord?"
I smiled, "Pity, my friend, was never in mine heart, to see thee in this fallen company of heretics rends mine soul, worry thou not however, for thee still remain in his grace and have his love. Hello Devil"
Kelly walked up next to me, wrinkling her nose at the smell.
"Hello, Angel," his body was suddenly racked with coughing, and as we got closer we saw there was a large gash down his entire body, oozing pus.
"Angel?" Kelly asked.
"That was his name for me."
"And you call him devil because its shorter than his other name?"
"Yep," I went over and cradled Devil's head in my lap.
"Oh my Devil, who hast laid you so low?"
He smiled, "My darling Angel protector, our old Master has done this deed."
I sighed, "He would be the only one who could beat you, Dev."
"I deserved it, I took his daughter as my mate without consulting him."
"Ah, dammit Devil, you should have known better than to go after Cassandra, as beautiful as she is."
He sighed, "I know, but when you left she turned her attentions to me, I couldnt help myself."
The two cougars entered bringing an old human bucket full of water, and a small deer carcass.
"Ah, here are my two beautiful kittens." his smile widened as they entered.
As he spoke they both began a deep, rumbling purr, that shook to the bone.
Devil looked at me, "Do you remember when we found these two as kittens buried in the snow."
"I do, small things then, not look at them just a year later yet they are huge."
Finally he looked at Kelly, "Is this the Kate you told me about, she is more beautiful than you told me, Angel."
Kelly blushed and looked away.
"Actually Dev, this is Kelly, Kate... well Kate was mated when I returned. Kelly was there for me when I was in a dark place. We have been in love for months now."
"Oh I see. You always had a talent for finding the most beautiful girls, Angel. Wish I had that talent, or at least a girl that actually loved me, instead of using me as a tool, before I died."
I took another look at the wound, it was deep and rugged. The blood had clotted, so it wasnt bleeding, but the pus was a bad sign.
I choked back tears, "I will keep you alive, brother," taking his paw.
"Brother?" Kelly said with surprise.
"I glanced at her, "Brother by blood, brother by bond. It makes no difference."
Abashed she looked down.
I turned back to Mephistopheles.
"Im going to take you to the pack they can help."
"My Angel please, you and I both know that I am dying, but I am at peace. Dont take that from me by prolonging my existance."
I looked into his eyes and glimsted the peace he was talking about.
"Are you really ready to meet the creator, Dev?"
"I am, I looked back at my life and I wouldnt change anything about it, especially things with you."
I finally couldnt hold the tears back, "But what if I'm not ready for you to go, You are my pillar of strength in this world, the untouchable wolf. My untouchable wolf."
He smiled, "I have but minutes left, Angel, the greatest thing you could have done for me is be here when I die." Coughes once again racked his body, "My brother, bond forged in blood and sweat, may the Lord's blessing always be with you--"
"-and may he welcome you lovingly into his arms when your time comes. And may you join his legion with grace and dignity, and with pride prove your worth to Him," I said to finish the blessing.
I gripped his paw tighter.
"I love you, brother, may you someday find peace."
"I love you too," I whispered as I felt life leave his body.
I backed away and let the Lions tend to him.

Far away, a new life entered this life as an old one left. Kates child had been born.
