I remember visiting this website once...
It was called The Little Mermaid
Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:

Great review Lindsay. I honestly didn\'t know you had a burning hatred for The Little Mermaid. This was a movie I grew up watching and I liked it, but I was never a fan of it.
WELL I LOVE IT! This movie is sweet and innocent and good and you broke it! You hurt my feelings and I\'m going home!
*sniff* You\'re right. I\'ve been home all along.
innocent?! have you ever heard of all the subliminal messages that are in disney movies?
lol, great ending, and yes even I started singing along to you guys when "Part of Your World\' played. How can you not?
Didn\'t she already DO a review of The Little Mermaid, and hasn\'t she said before, numerous times, how she hates this movie except the villain.
Disney has even admitted before though, to be fair the NChick, that no one liked making the prince before Aladdin because since they weren\'t the focus of the story and were just there to pop in now and then, no one cared about the Prince and usually just tried to get through making him and go back to working on the more interesting characters. Aladdin changed that since the prince WAS the focus of the story for a change, and since, Disney has created more interesting male leads.
Well, I agree, however what about Beauty and the Beast? The plot revolved around the Beast and Belle equally because the story starts out with the Beast first as the audience understands that the plot of the story starts with the Beast via stain-glass window as he refused the plea from the beggar woman/enchantress where he turns into a Beast because of his selfish nature, and therefore the story revolves around the Beast being saved by Belle. That\'s an even bigger contrast because Belle doesn\'t need to be saved or anything. Yes, she has a lot more personality than her predecessors, however she\'s also not the main focus of the film since she has really no conflict from the get go until the Beast held her father prisoner. Plus, sidenote, Beauty and the Beast is the only Disney Princess movie that Lindsay (NChick) actually likes because Belle is not the focus, and she\'s the one rescuing him from his conflict instead of the man saving the girl, and even have enough backbone to confront the situation than being passive like 85% of the Disney females. Then it continued with Aladdin a year later.
EXACTLY! Beauty and the beast is the best Romance stories Disney has ever made. The Romance develops into actual love. Yes I am a guy and Beauty and the beast is my favorite Disney film of all time as well as one of my favorite movies of all time.
I just loved Elisa Phantom Fandom. Phantdom, if you will.
Crap, now I\'m gonna have the entire soundtrack to this movie stuck in my head for the next week. Help me David Bowie, your my only hope. Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes!
Also still haven\'t forgiven you for Dune. *Cold Stare* Maybe a little.
David Bowie is the salvation to all things! Do not despair, for his music shall wipe the earworms from your mind and replace them with delightful treats of your choice! :D
I guess you could say that infamous VHS cover is one of Disney\'s greatest boners.
Oh man, we have lost the VHS but my family still has the box mainly because of that infamous tower!
"I guess you could say that infamous VHS cover is one of Disney\'s greatest boners."
that\'s pretty funny, but don\'t get to cocky; that was Disney\'s mistake.
I do love how the internet has allowed us to stop maturing at fifteen. :D
Wow! You guys can sing! Okay, so Allison\'s an alto, but she\'s still perfectly on pitch. And, woah, Kaylyn: You stole the show! We need more MarzGurl music stuff!
And you guys aren\'t fooling anyone. Todd in the Shadows may not like Nostalgia Chick, but Todd does like Lindsay. You don\'t go to two crappy movies with someone you don\'t like.
I like the Little Mermaid on on average level. But oh man Lindsay. I\'m sure you wouldn\'t really like Disneyland\'s Mermaid ride with your line of thinking.
It\'s basically like the Haunted Mansion only Little Mermaid and really good animatronics. It just takes the most popular songs to tell the story. So it\'s really intended for younger kids. I mean, personally I thought it was alright. I was able to check it out before I quit working there.
Anyway, nice video. Nice singing voices ladies!!
My only beef with what you said is that the Haunted Mansion\'s animatronics are amazing.
My aversion to "The Little Mermaid" has more to do with the typical Disney "happily-ever-after" ending. The first animated version I saw of this story was a 1975 anime that ended the same way as the original story: bitter-sweetly. It kinda shocked me, at the time, but I was also very, very young.
That was Dark Nella. You gotta pay more attention!
I remember loving this as a kid...now I\'m trying to remember why...
Even when I was I kid I saw that something was off about The Little Mermaids message. I saw Ponyo recently and loved it.
Go the Distance is the male equivalent of Part of That World.
And in my opinion,is much more of a typification of "someone actually deciding and doing something" than Little Mermaid. Which is why I like it better.
I didn\'t know ursula was modeled after Divine 0_0
What\'s that Nella? You want me to tickle Amy?
Anyone seen the anime version? Ends in suicide & tears. In hindsight, it was not a good idea for Major Video to put it in the kids\' section. That would be just like showing X1999 the movie to a child, the part where Kamui decapitates Fuuma.
*Disney\'s mermaid: Abandon your family for a guy you just met; make sure he\'s rich & handsome & doesn\'t mind that you\'re jailbait.
*Original mermaid: Abandon your family for an already-engaged man & kill yourself when he just wants to be friends.
*Original Snow White: Marry a pedophile necrophiliac you\'ve never laid eyes on before.
*Original Sleeping Beauty: Marry the already married man who raped you & killed his wife.
*Cinderella: You could have married a man in your class & got out of that hellhole years ago, but you aimed high & stayed there till you snagged someone rich.
Ah Rosie; there\'s another person who didn\'t make it to Suburban Knights.
It would have been hilarious if MarzGurl dressed up as Marvin the Martian for that.
I see, it\'s a chain; Lindsay calls Todd, Todd & Nash call Lupa. But who\'s calling Lindsay & Nash? Who does Lupa call? We have not achieved clusterf**k status yet.
Divine looked like King Jareth\'s fat mom.
Double coincidence on the Phantom of the Opera bit; I always thought that the girl who played Christine in the movie sounded like a dead ringer for Ariel\'s voice actress. Oh yeah, & the Phantom\'s name just happens to be Eric.
It\'s worse than that. She\'s cursed to die if the prince marries another. Her sisters sell their hair for a dagger that can return her to the sea if she kills her beloved and lets his blood fall on her legs. She loves him, so she won\'t, and she is vanished by morning. Though, if I remember correctly, she goes to Heaven in the world\'s longest and most tedious ending.
That anime version scarred me as a child. I was fresh from watching the Disney version, all starry-eyed and optimistic about life, and then I saw that anime. There were many tears that day.
Same thing happened with "The Fox and the Hound." Cute widdle puppy and fox cub playing together, "best of friends" song that makes life seem wonderful and bright... and then all depressing-ness breaks loose. Why, movie makers? Why do you do this to me?
Have you seen Bambi yet? How about Old Yeller? The Lion King? Up? I think Disney secretly enjoys traumatizing children.
So it seems that Disney\'s interpretation really is better...
hmmm run this \'storyline\' till all of team tgwtg is involved in a chain of unrequited love... :P
Original Beauty & The Beast - Redemption is its own reward. Basically the Beast dies at the end because even though Belle falls in love with him they see her father sick and dying so he sends her away to look after her father fully knowing that the curse will kill him before she comes back.
Its not a disney happy ending but seeing a character truly grow from a sadistic, cruel man to someone who is willing to sacrifice himself for somebody else\'s happiness is a much more gratifying.
B&tB is one of my fav Disney movies because of Geston LeDouchebag; he was a completely original character added to a story that technically had no actual villain, & Belle never really gives into Stockholm Syndrome. My other 2 favs are Fantasia & 3 Caballeros.
Don\'t forget Welshy calling Lupa, Bennett and Nostalgia Critic trying to give her "mouth-to-mouth" in Suburban Knights, and Film Brain at the end of their Hercules review. XD Seems everyone likes Lupa.
And now this... I think they\'re deliberately trying to create a love... octagon or something. It\'s kind of hilarious.
It\'s like how desirable redheads are in comic books, especially with DC & Marvel. Nerds are programmed to want them.
And in anime. I\'ve always wondered why Japanese anime has so many redheads when the bright red hair trait did not exist there prior to globalization.
Your forgetting Beauty & the Beast:Forsake your family for a shaggy creature that ends up dead.
Other Disney films with dark hindsights
I really can\'t stand those princess merchandise. Overly gowned statuettes smiling in the camera as to say "I\'m pretty, buy my products".
I had my own reason for hating this movie: my sister must have made me watch it 400 times. Some days she would watch it three times before sunset. I was thrilled when Beauty and the beast came out and she started watching that instead.
Incidentally, Nella: is that scarf supposed to look like the Fourth Doctor\'s?
I loved that joke with Todd. I do like the running gag of Todd stalking Lupa, it\'s always bizarrely funny. Glad to know it hasn\'t completely died just yet or if that\'s the last joke based on that at least it was a good one.
Song at the end really good. Partially because Lindsay gained enough experience to know how to edit this one together better. Mostly because everyone who took part in this one can sing extremely well as it seems. Where the hell did Marzgurl hide those pipes?
That said I still preferred the One More Day song the team did. Might have been the song itself or the unexpectedness of it but that one felt more impressive.
One more explanation as to why there is a dedicated Lupa fanbase (stalker Club)though I must admit. Paper shells on her boobs... not attractive.
Watching this made me realize how much the TGWTG girls... are actually very creepy!
...I know all the words to "Part of Your World"...I need to go cook a steak and watch "Road House" to reaffirm I have testosterone levels above that of a 12 year old girl.
While my manly tears didn\'t agree with what you said about Dune, I am sure to say I am totally on the same page with what you said on this movie. I loved this movie as a child and I always watched it over and over, but now seeing it as an adult... I realize how much of it is just bad.
I hate the selfish spoiled fangirl, I hate the cardboard cutout prince, I hate that the characters that should of learned something in the end, didn\'t and that Ariel got what she wanted in the end, and I hate that everything turned out all for the better, sappy and unrealistic.
While people hate to admit it, that\'s what it all is, a terrible coming of age story with great songs and animation.
Thank you for being brave enough to stand by your beliefs.
...I know all the words to "Part of Your World"...I need to go cook a steak and watch "Road House" to reaffirm I have testosterone levels above that of a 12 year old girl...
There\'s always the more masculinity friendly parody Slaughter Your World if that helps in your quest reassert your manness.
as a guy, i had a very hard time trying to not sing along at the end
me too man. we gotta be strong when fun stuff like that is going down =D
I\'d never thought about the story actually being about King Triton\'s changing beliefs. That\'s a really interesting point.
The Ursula fat jokes were tasteless, though. I couldn\'t tell if you were making a point about how other people view her, or if you were just calling her fat.
Now, then. Heh heh. Yeah, when I was seven I made a tape of myself singing "Part of Your World" with my awesome Fisher-Price tape recorder. I also begged my mom for a Little Mermaid hand-held video game (remember when each game was its own hand-held device? ah, nostalgia...and wastefulness XD ). I also always wanted to be a mermaid for Halloween, but Mom never got me a mermaid costume. *cue "Why does this happen to meeeee?" ;)
But anyway, you have a right to your opinions, and more power to ya!
"The Ursula fat jokes were tasteless, though. I couldn\'t tell if you were making a point about how other people view her, or if you were just calling her fat."
I\'d like to assume in good faith that Lindsay was merely being sarcastic and commenting on how problematic it was to have the villain be fat, since it codes fatness as being inherently bad (just like how all dem skinny intellectual villains code being skinny and/or intellectual as bad traits, feeding into the notion that BEING BIG AND DUMB = GOOD!)
The jokes were aimed at Disney\'d portrayal of villains. As Lindsay said the female villains are either super skinny or morbidly obese, there\'s no middle ground.
Go through all the Disney Villainess(es) and you will see that they portray them ugly in one aspect or another. Its very Nazist/Chris De Burgh in that we should despise any female that isn\'t perfect.
Honestly why is the only fat sea-woman in this movie the villain? Because she\'s the villain and you can\'t have a pretty villain.
I wasn\'t too impressed by Lupa\'s singing or that of whats-her-name (the fashion fairy - what *is* her name, anyway?), and obviously I can\'t comment on Nella\'s voice, but Lindsay and Roses were great, and Marzgurl really blew me away.
As for the movie itself, I never really saw it when I was little. I saw bits and pieces of it over the years, and could recognize the characters and most of the songs, but never really got into it. As for it having one of the best Disney villian songs, I dunno about that. It\'s okay, but I can think of at least half a dozen villian songs I like more - right off the top of my head: Hellfire, Playing with the Big Boys Now (Prince of Egypt is Disney, right?), and In the Dark of the Night (by far my favorite Disney song of all time).
Anyway, have any of you read the original version of the Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Anderson? That\'s even worse than the movie! The spell the witch casts to make her tail turn into legs causes extreme pain every time she walks, but the prince keeps making her dance because she\'s very graceful. And to add insult to injury, she doesn\'t even get the prince - he marries someone else, and she dies! Hans Christian Anderson was kind of a dick, ever notice that?
Pince of Egypt and Anastasia are not Disney films. Anastasia I think was Fox while PoE I\'m pretty sure was Dreamworks.
Read up on Anderson\'s life story, and bring a box of tissues. Or check out the Disney animation (Or any other rendition/version) of "The Little Match Girl." Hans Christian Anderson was not a dick. He desperately needed a hug.
Eating the sushi, that was distracting, and a little bit disconcerting. Todd blowing off Lindsay? This opens up possibilities for jokes based on a never ending circle of unrequited love. Up until I saw this video, I assumed that collecting gadgets and doodads that serve no practical purpose was mostly a guy thing... I must be living under a gosh darned rock.
As a Disney fan I honestly don\'t really give a damn about Ariel. My favorite princesses are Belle, Tiana and Rapunzel. As for the movie, the songs are what was so memorable for me, the characters not so much. Ariel is pretty much sushi for all I care.
AAARG! They all have good points. ..... I... don\'t know anything anymore... DX
I do love The Little Mermaid, but I will say that everything you say about it is true. Ariel is kind of an idiot who isn\'t in love with Eric so much as she is in love with something that isn\'t the boring and repetitive existence that she currently has. She\'s a typical rebellious teenager, and...that\'s pretty much it.
Still, the story is great, the music is great, and the villains are great, too. This movie is amazing, despite Ariel being a total ditz. :)
It\'s the same thing for me; I hate the cartoon as an adult but still like the music. As a kid, I watched the shit out of it. Disney did release a VHS of Little Mermaid music videos hosted by Sebastian\'s voice actor.
I guess this kind of goes in with what you guys said about Ariel actively causing everything that happens instead of just being pulled along like the princesses before her, but when I was a kid I really liked Ariel for how adventurous she was. I mean I\'m not denying the more negative things you said about her character but seriously the chick faced off against a shark without completely freaking out, went full speed over a cliff her FIRST time being the reins of horse and a couple other less impressive but still pretty daring things
silence_dais  - No Lindsay Don\'t Listen to them!!!
Look your right about the whole "Little Mermaid not being the real beginning of the Disney Ren". Don\'t be swayed by the foolishness. I had to grow up with this movie, and I didn\'t hate it back then but after re-watching over and over and over and over....oh god make it stop.....Ehm.
Look Ariel was a nice starting point, lets be honest she really isn\'t the "Iconic" Disney Princess. She\'s a dumb bimbo that thinks "Hey I can\'t see any bad consequences of selling my voice, the very thing I need to communicate with since that is the one trait that actually would be useful to tell the guy I think I\'m in love with how I feel about him, ever backfiring on me in any way, shape, or form!" God the only way they could make her worse if they tried to infuse the "Blonde" stereotype on us by making her Blonde Hair and Blue Eyed. Then again that would insinuate that Walt Disney was a Nazi...
Anywho yes three or four songs are worth remembering but you know whats not? Prince...whatever the hell his name is. Seriously was this Disney\'s interpretation of Keanu Reeves? If so nice job, just put some classes and a black trenchcoat on him, then have him repeat the lines "There is no spoon." "I know Kung Fu..." and "Whoa!" several times and I\'d say the movie would be worth watching again.
Seriously ladies, why are you so attached to this movie? At least Belle in Beauty and the Beast proves that Disney knows how to make beautiful and intelligent women. Hell Jasmine at least helped defeat Jifar in her movie! What about Pochahontas? Least she...well is the Native American version of Ariel but with more intelligence and actually manages to stop a conflict that would have ended the lives of her people.
Look the Crab was a nice running joke, the Preacher with a "Hard on" is funny, and the penis tower...well hell it\'s a penis tower, clearly Disney has perverts among their artists. The movie itself though is...nothing. Just some songs that basically show our protagonist is a selfish ditz, who may have tried to redeem herself by wanting to know more about the world around her, screwed it up by seeing some good looking jerk off that apparently wanted to meet the girl with the nice vocal cords because he realized he could have great sex with her and listen to her moans, screams, and whimpers as they did every position of the Kharma Sutra. -_-
Making belle smart was one of the best things they actually ever did.
In the original story actually Belle was kind of a ditz that had to talk to her father before she realized that that man she as dreaming about and basically tell her "Look past the beasts looks... it\'s me!" because she kept thinking that the mean horrible beast was holding the hot dude somewhere in the castle. =_=
Anyways I prefer The Lion King because it\'s plot line is Hamlet >:3
Did Belle actually ever do anything in the movie to demonstrate how educated, cultured or inventive she was? From what I remember all she ever did was sing about it. Her father seemed to design and maintain most of the machinery, and I don\'t remember her doing much in the castle besides persuading the Beast to stop being a dick.
I can\'t be the only one who preferred \'Rescuers Down Under\' to the rest of the Disney renaissance combined. They\'re all the god damned same: bobbleheaded princess who just \'wants more\', Prince Charming, comedic relief, and large amounts of musical filler which people tend to replay quite a lot. The songs aren\'t all that entertaining even in the context of the movie. The conflict is always carried almost exclusively by one over-the-top villain out of spite or jealousy or some other hollow reason.
yeah you\'re pretty much right, if anything the Great Mouse Detective started the disney renisance because it gave them the confidence to try one more time with the little mermaid.
oh boy Ariel along with Snow White have to be the two dumbest princesses ever. I\'ll sell my soul for a guy who i just looked at....stalker much? and nothing bad happens to here except turning into a seaweed thing for like 30 seconds.
Prince eric........snore. not at all interesting and has the personality of wood. At least ALaddin and Prince whatshebucket in princess and the frog were more interesting....
the villian....this is what grips me..a contract do they not know how to best use fine print. I would put in very tiny print that they just get turned into seaweed the moment they sign. Jeesh that would have been more interesting...
while the animation is amazing especially Glen Keane\'s of Ariel when she can\'t talk or singing part of her world. I just think Disney has made better movies like Beaut and the Beast or Tangled that have better characters and princesses
Kudos to you for mentioning the Great Mouse as an important entry in the Disney renaissance! I was a little kid at that time, and Disney movies were just kind of background noise until I saw Great Mouse Detective, and that\'s when Disney movies really started to matter to me.
To be fair, let\'s say she *did* have her voice with her. Who\'s to say a mermaid from Atlantica can speak English? Whereas here she had three days to learn it (See Tom Hanks\' movie \'Splash\')
