I found out during the first week I joined fanpop. I couldn't believe that I didn't figure it out but I'm not taking it too seriously. Considering Ariel's not a goddess considering her and her family can die, gods and goddesses can't die. Plus there's also the fact Hercules is no where near as attractive enough to be related to Ariel.

Well, I think they aren't relative. I know just a little bit about Greek mythology, but I know that their gods were like human being, not hybrid, half animal - half human, like in Egyptian mythology. So as Triton is merfolk, he is some kind of hybrid, and he is not Poseidon. If he were Poseidon, he should be called Poseidon, not Triton. And KataraLover put a intesreting point about Ariel's family being mortal, gods are immortal.... I think I speak too much, but it's very weird thinking about Ariel and Hercules being relatives =S

Poseidon was NOT ever confirmed to be Triton's father. If you really do your research on Greek Mythology you'll find experts don't know who Triton's parents are, Poseidon being his father is a myth. Secondly, the Triton in "The Little Mermaid" is not the same as the mythological triton, they just have the same name. In fact, on the Little Mermaid DVD they talk about naming him AFTER Triton, not that he is the same. But even if he was, he has no relation to Poseidon. In the "Hercules" tv show, Triton even appears and it's not the same Triton as in TLM. Thirdly, in TLM story, the little mermaid's father is not Triton at all, just some random merman, in fact no one in the story has names. Triton is modeled off of NEPTUNE, actually, not the actual greek creature Triton, but the Triton in TLM is not the same as the greek character. They just were named after it. Same goes for Athena, because the Athena in Greek Mythology was actually a daughter of Zeus,which would make her much older (she would be an aunt to him) than the greek Triton. They're just names, it doesn't make them the same person. Sorry, but they are NOT related.
they modeled him after Neptune (who is a ROMAN god, but romans basically copied all the greek gods and gave them their own names. so triton is the equivalent of poiseidon, but seeing as that he's clearly not immortal....he is not a greek deity at all.)

I TOTALLY agree with princesslullaby, and I'm bored of people saying that Ariel and Hercules are cousins... It doesn't make sence at all anyway: Hercules is a character from the Greek mythology and Ariel is a Hans Christian Andersen character.

If Posidon is Triton's father, then Hercules is uncle to Ariel, not cousin.
