Peach Creek High had stood deserted for the last three months. But this particular morning, the parking lot was filled and the courtyard alive with teenagers moving in and out of the building. It was the first day of the 1999-2000 school year.

Among all the cars moving about was a rusty 83 Datsun, which speed in front of the school into the parking lot, giving an earsplitting squeal of burning rubber as the car stopped rapidly in a parking space. The two doors opened, and one by one, emerged Ed, Edd, and Eddy.

Ed had been driving the car, and he grinned when he realized his parking accuracy. I did a good job, Ed told himself, smiling. Although his intelligence had improved considerably since his childhood in the cul-de-sac, he was still the slowest of the Eds. He was also still the strongest, stronger than many of the football players, even though he had never lifted weights before. He wore blue jeans, a green t-shirt, and a black trenchcoat with a red anarchy symbol embroidered on it. (He and the Eds friend Spud were going thru an anarchist phase, believing they were rebels but had actually caused no trouble or held any real anarchist beliefs.) His auburn hair had grown out quite long, and fell in his face frequently.

Ed, you could have had us killed! Edd exclaimed, emerging from the passenger seat. Personality-wise, Edd hadnt changed very much. He was still an advocate for cleanliness and rules, although his appearance and musical tastes didnt always suggest it. He wore baggy dark blue jeans, a long-sleeved red-orange shirt, and his familiar sockhat. His three black hairs were considerably longer, and now he had a goatee. And, his favorite type of music at the moment was grunge and alternative; he was about to start a band, as long as it didnt interfere with his studies.

Dont have a bird, sockhead, Eddy said, jumping out behind Edd; he had been sitting in the backseat. Eddy still had an ego the size of a small continent, and repeat rejections and insults had never brought it down. He still enjoyed a good scam now and then, and had been suspended from school more times than he could count. Now, Eddy wore light blue jeans, a wifebeater, and a yellow sort of Hawaiian shirt. His three hairs were carefully slicked back, and he ran a hand thru them as he stared up at Peach Creek High School.

I cant believe summer break is over already, Eddy groaned.

Just think, Eddy! Edd exclaimed, grabbing his bulging backpack and heading towards the entrance. Eddy and Ed grabbed their bags and hurried to catch up. Were seniors now! Isnt that great?

No one else above us, Ed said. That *is* nice!

You guys dont know a thing about nice, Eddy said, as they crossed the courtyard. He pointed to a girl none of the Eds recognized, and said, *That* is nice. If here neckline were any lower wed be able to see her

Suddenly, Eddy received a firm slap on the back of his head. When do you boys ever learn? said a familiar voice, sweet yet low compared to most of the girls.

Edna, you bitch, that hurt! Eddy exclaimed.
The three Eds turned to face their best female friend. Edna laughed, pushing her brown hair out of her eyes and adjusting her blue sunglasses. She was still more or less the same old Edna from their youth, headstrong and crafty, although her distaste for dating had slowly faded. Now, she had been going out with another of the Eds friends, Spud, for about three months. (The Eds were all three single, although they each had gone out with several girls in the past, Edd in particular.) She was wearing blue bellbottoms and a purple bowling shirt.

Sorry, Eddy, she replied, looking around the courtyard, most likely for Spud or her younger brother Brian, who was a sophomore. I just couldnt help it. My hand slipped.

Ed and Edd chuckled, and Eddy frowned. Yeah, right, he replied.

Look, wed better get inside, weve got classes to attend, after all, Edd said, checking his watch.

Of course, Edna nodded. Ill talk to you boys later, okay?

The Ed-boys nodded, and Edna dashed off. So, the guys continued on their way, entering the school and looking for their lockers. (Each of them had received a schedule and locker number at registration.) Finally, they found them, well hidden in a dead-end hallway next to the Physics room.

Im never going to remember this, Ed sighed, unloading his things into his locker.

Yeah, we dont know anyone by us, Eddy said, looking at the other people sorting their things in their lockers.

It could be worse, Edd sighed. At least were not next to the

Hello, boys.

The Eds turned quickly, gasping in surprise. Standing in front of them were Lee, May, and Marie Kanker.

Hey, here are our lockers! May exclaimed, pointing at three lockers next to those of the Eds.

What luck, Lee said, dropping her bookbag with a loud thud. Edd backed into Ed in surprise.

Dont worry, Double D, Ed whispered. The Kankers havent liked us for *years*!

Yes, lets hope it stays that way, Edd whispered back, and the three Eds watched silently as the Kankers arranged their lockers and headed for class.

I cant believe they didnt say anything else! Eddy exclaimed. What a relief that they dont like us anymore

Eddy! Edd yelped. Were going to be late! So, as fast as they could, the Eds grabbed what they needed and raced off to find their first hour classes.

*******************************

Perfect! Edd said, admiring his carefully written-out sign, announcing auditions for his alternative band at his house after school the next day. I really hope some people show up!

Ed wrinkled his nose. Alternative is Not as cool as progressive rock.

Its not nice to insult other peoples music tastes, Ed, Edd whispered, as they walked down to the cafeteria for lunch.

Thats what progheads do, Ed said knowingly.

Edd sighed. Just try to be nice, okay?

Ed nodded, as they entered the lunch line behind Eddy.

I hate school food, Eddy complained, as the lunch lady slopped a suspicious-looking slice of ham on his tray.

Yum! Ed said, as the lunch lady gave him extra ham.

No thanks, Edd said quickly. Im a vegetarian.

They pulled up to their usual table and plopped their trays down.

How has your day been so far? Edd asked Ed and Eddy.

Hard, Ed said, scratching his head. I shouldnt have taken Chemistry.

Tell me about it, Eddy said. We do a tiny first-day experiment and we almost blow up the school!

Figures, Edd frowned, taking a bite of salad.

Suddenly, Brian walked up and tapped Ed on the shoulder. Hey, Ed, Brian said, grinning.

Brian, my man, Ed said, giving Ed a high five.

I brought that King Crimson CD you wanted to borrow, Brian said, setting Red on the table. Its got some sweet bass riffs, he added.

Thanks! Ed said, setting it on top of his General Math books he had brought with. Ill listen to it as soon as I get home, okay?

Yep, Brian said. Oh yeah, Double D, I saw your poster coming down here! Mind if I try out?

Not at all! Edd grinned. I havent heard you play in a long time.

Ive been practicing, Brian smiled. Well, Ive gotta go, see ya!

Brian raced off, and the Eds returned to their meals. Ten minutes later, they had finished eating and still had time before class started.

I need a smoke, Eddy complained. Ill be back.

I wish hed quit, Edd whispered to Ed, as Eddy walked away. And I wish I could stay and talk to you, but I have to put up more posters! With that, Edd dashed off, leaving Ed alone. He shrugged his shoulders and walked back in the direction of his locker, books clutched tightly. He began thinking about Edds band and Eddys smoking problem, spacing out so much he didnt realize he was about to collide with someone.

Oh, Im so sorry! Ed exclaimed, staring down at May Kanker, her books, and his books, scattered on the floor. Im clumsy, Ed said, helping May to her feet.

Dont worry about it, Big Ed, May blushed.

Here, Ed said, helping May pick up her books, and the picked up his own.

Whats that? May asked, pointing to the King Crimson CD.

Red by King Crimson, Ed grinned.

Ive never heard of it, May said quietly.

They are progressive rock, Ed said. Its not a very popular music style.

May nodded. Well, Ive got to find my sisters, she mumbled, staring at her feet. Thanks for helping me pick up my stuff

No problem, Ed said, and May scurried away. Ed simply shrugged his shoulders again and continued towards his locker, hoping General Math would go better than Chemistry.

*******************************

At lunch, the campus was always filled with High School students. Some of them would toss around a Frisbee, some of them would sit and talk, some of them would simply walk around.

And some of them would go behind the storage shed and smoke.

Ive needed this all day, Eddy sighed, also happy to see that today he was alone. The strain of school was already getting to him today, hed had two teachers yell at him and he had almost walked out of class one of those times. It had taken all his willpower to stay. He wondered how Ed and Double D could get thru their day without a smoke.

Eddy lit up and took a deep draw. They dont understand it, he said, blowing smoke into the air. Double Ds all, Its so bad for your health, Eddy! He laughed to himself.

It *is* bad for your health, babe, said a familiar voice behind him. Lee Kanker stood in front of him, and he shrank back into the wall. Eddy knew fully well that Lee must be stronger than him she *was* PCHs football quarterback, after all.

Lee snatched the cigarette from Eddys hand, dropped it on the ground, and stomped it out with a swift foot move.

What do you want? Eddy sneered. You just wasted a perfectly good smoke.

You Ed-boys sure know how to charm a girl, Lee laughed. Is that the attitude that made Dana leave you?

She didnt leave me, really I left her, Eddy winced at the memory. Their relationship was on-again, off-again, until their sophomore year, when she had caught him making out with another girl. At first she had been mad, but finally relented and they agreed not to date, but to just be friends. It hadnt worked out like that, though they had hardly talked since then. He had always felt a little guilty about it, hoping someday he could make it up to the only girl he had ever really cared about.

But for right now, he had to deal with Lee. However you want to put it, Lee smirked.

Why are you doing this, anyway? Eddy asked cautiously, trying to slide against the wall away from her.

Dont leave, Lee said in a sweet voice, grabbing his shirt. Dont you know its rude to walk out in the middle of a conversation?

Youre scaring me, Lee, Eddy said with wide eyes. Suddenly, the bell rang, and he sighed with relief.

I dont want to be late, Lee said, letting Eddy go. Ill be seeing *you* later.

Lee walked away with a confident stride, and Eddy sighed, following her back into the school. He met up with Edd inside, and right away he noticed something was up.

Did something happen, Eddy? Edd asked. You look like

Like I was thrown against a wall? Eddy finished for him. Thats not so far off. Ill tell ya about it later.

*******************************

Edd looked around, pleased by the turnout. It seems as though my band might succeed after all! he said to himself, watching bassists tune and drummers fight over the trapset for a chance to practice. Some of the people he knew, some he didnt.

Um, hello everyone! Edd yelled, and everyone turned to look at him. He grinned, and said, Welcome! Im Edd thats with two Ds, so you can call me Double D. I am an alternative and grunge guitarist with aspirations of starting a band, and I hope to find some talented musicians to join me!

Edd started with the bassists; all of them were guys and most of them were not very good, which was very discouraging. Perhaps starting a band was not a good idea, after all But then Brian walked up, and his confidence made Edd smile.

You look very put together, Brian, Edd smiled.

Im really nervous, Brian replied. But Ill give it my best.

Edd listened intently as Brian started playing a familiar, not to mention tricky, bassline, and then began improvising off it. Everyone at the auditions turned to watch him as he finished off with an incredibly complicated and perfectly executed riff.

Wow! Edd said, and the other bassists instantly began grumbling and packing up their instruments.

That was great, Brian! Edd said. Welcome to the band!

Thanks, Double D! Brian exclaimed.

Just Wait over there, and once I get thru the other auditions we can try playing a bit.

Next we have drummers! Edd said, and a group of ten or so drummers lined up. The only one Edd knew very well was his friend Spud, who was nice enough to go first.

Hey Double D, Spud said and grinned. Spud looked similar to how he did when he was younger, but had grown out his hair and dawned a huge brown coat that was embroidered with the anarchy symbol, like Eds.

Greetings Spud! Edd replied. I didnt know you were a drummer!

I havent played in a while, Spud confessed. I dont know if Ive still *got it*.

Well, lets hear you play, then.

Spud played, very well, to Edds delight. The competition between drummers was tighter, though, and he had a tough time picking just one. But, finally, he decided Spud would be the best bet because they already knew each other.

As the drummers left, there were only singers to go. The singer group was much smaller, only four guys who all looked a bit intimidated by each other. One by one, they sang, and all four of them were a bit too timid for Edds taste.

This is a real pickle, Edd said to Brian and Spud. None of them have the lung capacity to pull it off.

You want lung capacity, huh? I got yer lung capacity right here!

Everyone turned around to the garage entrance, to see a very familiar figure standing there, hands on hips. Marie Kanker? Edd asked rhetorically.

None other than, Marie said, walking in and grabbing the practice microphone. Stand back, boys.

Marie proceeded to sing the same song the guys had sang, and even though it *was* sung by a guy originally, Marie was closer to him than any of the guys that tried out. She had volume and aggression, which was exactly what the band needed.

When she finished, Edd said meekly, I think Marie is our new singer.

The guys trying out for vocals left, leaving the four band members in the garage. So, would you guys like to try a song or two?

Marie, Spud, and Brian looked at each other and nodded. Sure. So, they went to their instruments (or microphone, in Maries case) and Edd started explaining the riffs in the first song they would work on to Brian and Spud. It was only a matter of minutes before they were playing it, and Marie caught on to her vocal part very quickly.

This might work after all, Edd whispered.

*******************************

And when I hit another foul ball, everyone on the team, even Coach, stared at me. I dont know what my problem is; I practiced all summer but everyone else still seems better than me

Mmm hmm, Edna mumbled, trying to do her Government homework and listen to Spud talk about his bad day at baseball practice at the same time. Youre not bad, Spud, youve just gotta keep on trying.

Yeah, but I think that maybe if I hadnt tried out Spud continued, when suddenly there was a frantic knocking on Ednas bedroom door.

Hang on, Edna said, and yelled, COME BACK LATER! to the door.

As you were saying, Edna said, and Spud continued with his story. But he hadnt said more than a few words before the door burst open and Brian came charging in. He had a look of extreme happiness on his face, and when he realized Edna was on the phone, he grabbed the phone out of her hand and hung it up.

Whatd you do that for, dink? Edna yelled, glaring at Brian.

You wont believe it! Brian exclaimed, his eyes lit up like a kid in a candy store. Brian didnt often look this excited, most of the time he was fairly calm and reserved. He had gone to therapy when he was in Jr High to work out his gender issues, and had come out feeling like a new person, no longer needing to act masculine all the time. He grew out his hair, sprouted a goatee, and started listening to progressive rock, which was also Eds favorite type of music. And he wasnt embarrassed of himself in the least. He seemed happier than ever, in fact. But even with his breakthru, he was still very strong and played on the PCH football team to work out his aggressions. He also was very talented in music, and Edna suspected that had to do with the reason Brian was so excited.

Let me guess, Edna said, smiling at Brians enthusiasm. Youre the bassist in Double Ds grunge band.

YES! Brian exclaimed, sitting down on Ednas bed and trying to take deep breaths. He said I was by far the best out of everyone who tried out!

So, who else is in the band? Edna asked. Spud told me hes the drummer, and of course Double D is the lead guitarist Whos singing?

Marie Kanker, Brian said, laughing. I never would have dreamed she had a good singing voice, but she just belted it out like no one else! It was awesome!

Think youll do any prog rock? Edna joked.

Brian wrinkled his nose. I doubt it, Brian replied. But maybe something by an 80s hair band?

Edna chuckled; although Brian hadnt been a major hair band advocate for a long time, he was still fond of their music. Edna, however, was still as big of a fan of disco as ever.

Well, Im sure youll have lots of fun, Edna said, picking up the phone again. Youd better go practice.

Yeah, youre right, Brian said, and in a flash, he was out of Ednas room. She chuckled, and dialed Spuds number.

Im sure hell understand, she mumbled as the phone rang. When Brian gets excited, its downright dangerous.

***********************************

When Lee burst into the living room, May almost jumped out of her comfortable spot on the couch, where a soft music was coming from the boombox in front of her. May, what are you doing? Lee yelled at her sister.

May glared at Lee. Im just using the CD player! she replied. Calm down!

But it sucks! Marie said, entering the room. She ran over to May, grabbed the CD case, and laughed. King Crimson? Who IS this?

May frowned. I know someone who happens to like this music, thats all, she replied indignantly. And its not that bad.

Would that someone happen to be our local anarchist, Ed? Marie giggled, sitting down on the couch next to May. Do you think if you get into his music, you might get into his heart?

None of your business! May replied, blushing. Lee and Marie laughed.

Its too obvious, May, Lee sighed, sitting down on Mays other side. Youre long gone on the boy.

You two shouldnt talk! May replied, glaring at her sisters. Marie, its no secret that you still like Double D! Youre singing in his little band just so you can get closer to him!

Hey! Marie yelled, blushing. Thats not true Well, not totally

And you, Lee, May faced her other sister. Its obvious that being the football quarterback AND telling him what to do and what not to do is NOT impressing Eddy at least I know what to do to interest Ed! You shouldnt be talking, Eddys never said more than three words to you since seventh grade!

Lee punched May in the arm. What do you know! she exclaimed, jumped up, and left the room.

Now look what you did! Marie exclaimed. Im off to practice my singing. She batted her eyelashes, laughed, and walked away.

They dont understand me, or Ed, May frowned, looking at the CD case. I guess thats something we have in common.

*******************************

Thanks for taking me here, Spud! Edna grinned.

No problem, Spud replied. He had brought Edna to Stage Right, a disco joint that could have been straight out of the 70s. He knew Edna liked to dance, and this place had just opened up, so it seemed perfectly logical to take her.

Although Spud couldnt dance (he often joked he had two left feet), he loved to watch Edna dance she was really good, from years of practice, and she was really passionate about it, bouncing around and laughing.

Cmon, boy! she giggled, dancing around. Get into the music! How can you *not* have fun, with Disco Inferno playing?

I *am* having fun! Spud smiled.

Youd rather be playing baseball, though.

Im good at baseball! Or, I *was*, at least

Lets not argue about this now, Edna pleaded. I know you dont like dancing

Spud laughed. No, I dont.

Ill take you to a baseball game in the city, okay? Edna winked.

Awesome! Spud gave Edna a high five. In that case, boogie down, girl!

Spud struck a cheesy disco pose and Edna clasped a hand over her mouth to contain her laughter. He grabbed her hands and swung her around on the floor.

As they danced, Spud said, I assume youre coming to my baseball game next weekend? I know its the day before the Homecoming Dance and all

Thats no problem at all! Edna smiled. The only drawback is that Nazz is coming home from PCU for the weekend and Mom wants me to hang out with her. That stinks really bad.

Nazz? Spud asked, suddenly remembering the girl that had once been the object of his affection. It seemed so long ago now he hadnt even seen her since she went off to college the year before. She had been home a few times, Spud knew, but he hadnt had a chance to see her then.

Spud was suddenly aware that Edna had stopped dancing and was looking at him funny. Whats wrong? he asked.

You dont Still like Nazz, do you?

Spud was taken aback by Ednas question. No! Of course not! But hey, you know, you could bring her with to my baseball game

I cant believe you just said that, Edna sighed. Ill bet youre still crazy about her.

Im not, Edna, Spud assured her, taking her hand. Ive been over Nazz for a long time. Shes pretty and nice and all, but shes not you.

Damn right shes not, Edna laughed.

She wouldnt make me disco, Spud joked.

No, she wouldnt, Edna said, and began dancing again. Lets just have fun and forget I said anything about Nazz, okay?

You said something about who? Spud joked, and he started dancing as well.

*******************************

The first few days of Sabrinas senior year had been enjoyable. She enjoyed seeing Leo, her new boyfriend, in the hallways, and he was even in a couple of her classes. She was looking into several different extracurricular activities, and had already started taking advanced violin lessons. She was especially pleased with her appearance as well she wore a blue shirt and orange cargo pants, and her hair was cut fairly short and styled wavily.

The only thing that was less than pleasant for Sabrina was spending time in the same building as Megan Hildebrant. Both girls were ex-girlfriends of Edd, and although they no longer harbored feelings for him (as far as they were aware), they still had a bit of distaste for each other. Sabrina had dated Edd after Megan, and she always felt as though there was still some chemistry between them even as she dated him. The two girls had never gotten along. They also had an academic rivalry both girls were incredibly school-smart.

The other problem was that they were both ordinarily such nice, caring girls as everyone always said. Their angers had to vent somewhere

Sabrina was pondering this at the end of English, and the bell disrupted her thoughts. She gathered her things together and walked out of the room. Outside the door, Leo was waiting, and it brightened her day just to see him.

I got out of study hall a little early, Leo smiled. Thought Id wait for you.

Thanks! Sabrina beamed after her spotty boyfriend-related past (before Edd), it was always nice for a guy to go out of his way for her.

What do you have planned after school? Leo asked her.

Well, first Ive got to stop at Mr. Roberts classroom to ask about the C I got on his quiz surely theres been a mistake Sabrina started, but stopped in her tracks. Megan was walking past her, talking to another girl.

I cant believe you aced Mr. Roberts quiz! gushed the girl, and Megan grinned. Im sure I failed it.

Dont be so hard on yourself, Megan soothed. It *was* hard, I have no idea how I passed at all With that, the two girls rounded a corner and were out of sight.

Whats wrong with Megan? Leo asked, but figured out the answer for himself before she said it. Does this have to do with that Edd guy?

Its more than that, Sabrina frowned. I mean, look at how smart she is! Do you suppose she said she aced it just to make me mad?

I doubt it, Leo said, giving Sabrina a hug, right in the middle of the hall. You shouldnt worry about it so much. I like to see your smile, anyway.

Sabrina smiled at him. Thanks, Leo, she said. Youre the best. But now Ive got to get to class wouldnt want a tardy in the first week!

No, you wouldnt, Leo smiled. See you later.

Bye! Sabrina exclaimed, and dashed to her locker. Megans academic success had angered her slightly, but Leo had made the ordeal worthwhile.

*******************************

Brian dashed across the football field, his eyes peeled for Lee and the football. He was open why didnt she pass it to him? Suddenly, he saw her throw the ball, and leaped up for the catch. He caught it skillfully, and landed with a thud on the ground.

Coach blew his whistle, and everyone looked at him. Good practice, boys! he exclaimed. Go shower and head out!

Brian sighed with relief it had been a hard practice! He jogged to the locker room, and took out his hair-tie, letting his brown hair fall in his face. He showered and dressed quickly, but felt a little uneasy when he heard some of his teammates snickering behind him.

Hey Brian! one yelled, and the other burst out laughing. Still got your pink blanket, boy?

Brian rolled his eyes. Her name is Sheet, he said, walking up to the football player and pushing him aside effortlessly. Dont mess with her. With that, he walked out of the locker room and across the field. On the other side, Spud was waiting in his car, ready to give Brian a ride to practice with Dry Rain (the band name they had decided on at lunch that day).

Hey man, Spud said, as Brian got in.

Hey, Brian said, smiling. He admired Spud and Eds anarchist group, and although they never really struck him as anarchists, it was an amusing charade anyway.

Tough practice? Spud asked, noticing Brian was still sweating.

Oh yeah, Brian laughed. Tough baseball practice?

As always, Spud grinned. Coach is trying to whip us into shape in time for the first game that man expects too much of us. Were high school students, not professionals

Spud parked his old car in front of Edds house, and he and Brian got out. They entered the garage, where Edd was tuning his guitar and Marie was warming up her voice.

Sorry if were a little late, Brian apologized, grabbing his bass (he had left it there that morning) and began tuning.

Its quite all right, Edd replied. I know you two have your extracurriculars to attend.

Lets go, boys! Spud said, and frowned when Marie sent him a withering glance. And girl, he added.

Hmm! Marie huffed. Yeah, lets go. So, Edd began playing, and the others picked up on his lead.

Brian was in great form today his timing seemed right on and he felt incredibly inspired. The only thing that affected his mood was the way Marie was constantly smiling at Edd, looking over his shoulder at his TAB music, asking him questions and listening intently What was up with that? Brian could remember when Marie used to like Edd but surely that had long since passed!

Brian wondered if he should mention it to Edd he seemed totally oblivious to her! Finally, when the practice wrapped up, Marie watched as Edd put his guitar away and turned to go inside.

See ya around, Marie smiled, squeezing Edds hand. Then she walked away without a backwards glance. Brian and Spud exchanged confused glances.

Id better go, too, Spud said, walking out to his car. See ya!

Brian knew he had to tell Edd, because it seemed he *still* didnt know about Maries passes! Yo, Double D! Brian said quickly. Can I talk to you for a minute?

Of course, Edd smiled. About what?

About Marie, Brian said, suddenly feeling very awkward for telling Edd this. Have you noticed how shes Well Head over heels for you?

What? Edd laughed. No shes not! Did you see the way she was looking at you? Brian asked. Its more than obvious, dude. And when she squeezed your hand thats definitely not just a friendly gesture.

Edd frowned. Youre right about that. Marie never seemed like the affectionate sort to me.

Shes not, Brian agreed. I just thought Id let you know what Ive noticed

Thanks, Brian, Edd smiled. Im glad to know. With that, he walked inside, and Brian walked out of the garage.

Whatcha doing, Brian? asked a familiar voice nearby.

Yo, Johnny! Brian laughed, trotting up to his best friend. Johnny was in his front yard, reading thru a script for Drama Club. Preparing and performing in Speech and Drama was his passion, and it kept him incredibly busy he didnt often have time for his best friend anymore. I just got out of band practice.

Neat! Johnny grinned. Wanna go get a pizza? Then I can tell you about our new play!

Sounds cool, Brian agreed. In his mind, listening to Johnny talk about his drama was a lot better than thinking about the real drama everyone else was enduring.

*******************************

It had been a long time since Ed had hosted a monster movie marathon. So, Wednesday night, Ed called up Edd and Eddy, asking if theyd like to come over and watch a few of the classics. Of course, both of them eagerly agreed.

It wasnt more than 10 minutes later that the three boys were camped out in front of Eds TV, ready to watch Robot Rebel Ranch.

Remember when our parents wouldnt let us watch this movie? Edd laughed. That seems like such a long time ago

It was, Eddy confirmed. We were 12! That was five years ago!

I feel old, Ed laughed, pushing play on his VCR.

We were weird little kids! Eddy exclaimed, jumping up from his seat. Wed race around, looking for jawbreakers Eddy moved around with lots of actions, representing how they acted in their youth, and Ed and Edd were in stitches.

And wed do lots of crazy stuff where Eddy was suddenly cut off, when he tripped over Eds CD player and fell backwards into his closet. (Eds room was *still* a huge mess!)

Eddy, are you okay?! Edd exclaimed, racing over and helping Eddy up.

Im good, Eddy said, rubbing his head. I just crashed into a box, thats all.

MY BOX! Ed exclaimed, a look of horror on his face. WHERE IS IT?! He raced over to the closet, pushing Eddy and Edd out of the way, and kneeled down to examine a plain-looking brown box. It had been ripped, and the contents were spilling out onto the floor.

Hes pretty sensitive about a stupid box, Eddy muttered, and he and Edd looked over Eds shoulders, trying to catch a glimpse of what was inside.

Its not a stupid box, Ed frowned, picking up a picture frame and hugging it close to his body.

Give me that! Eddy exclaimed, grabbing the picture frame. As soon as he saw it, his attitude dissolved.

Im sorry, Big Ed, Eddy apologized, handing the frame back to Ed. I didn’t know

Its okay, Ed said. He looked down at the picture, tears welling up in his eyes. It was of him, and his ex-girlfriend Penny Lane. It was taken when they were 15, of them dancing in Pennys shack in the meadow. It was one of the last times he ever

saw her.

I thought you were over her, Edd commented. Youve never said a thing about her, not in the last year at least!

Ed pulled out more contents of the box a Beatles LP Penny had left at his house, a pressed flower, and a big tye-dye shirt she had made him and he had actually worn several times when they were still dating. It had a big purple peace sign that Penny had embroidered on the front herself.

Ed sighed heavily, looking down at the anarchy patch on his black trenchcoat. What would Penny say if she knew I was an anarchist? he asked himself sadly. She was all about peace and goodwill, the hippie free spirit And how would she feel about prog rock? It can be incredibly distant from the music she always enjoyed I feel like Im betraying her memory

She up and left for no apparent reason! Shes not being betrayed! Eddy exclaimed, and Edd glared at him.

Were all sad that Penny left, Ed. I agree that it *is* strange that one day we went over there and she and all her belongings were just Gone But at least you have these beautiful memories.

I miss her so much, Double D, Ed sniffed. I never got over her Shes the most beautiful girl in the world. She was the only person who really understood me.

We understand you, Big Ed, Eddy said, patting Ed on the back. Were your best friends!

Ed smiled Eddy was right. Thanks, Eddy, Ed said. You are still my ideal friend, soft and

Yeah, yeah, I know, Eddy groaned. Soft and cuddly like mashed potatoes.

Yes, Ed grinned, giving Eddy a big hug.

A sudden scream from the TV brought Ed back to reality. Were missing the movie, guys! Ed exclaimed, carefully putting Pennys things away and returning to the TV. Edd and Eddy smiled and returned to the TV as well.

*******************************

Look at the football players! Eddy laughed. Dont they have anything better to do than play meaningless sports? The three Ed-boys were walking to Eddys car past the football field, where the PCH football team was practicing.

Football is a great way to get scholarships, Edd commented. And look at Brian hes a very intelligent young man who has many other interests as well. Brian noticed the Eds walking past and waved to them quickly before the next play commenced.

Brians Brian. Hes a special case. Not to mention a few pawns short a full chess set.

Ed and Edd glared at Eddy, so he kept his mouth shut.

And what about Lee? Edd asked, smiling slyly at Eddy. After that episode behind the storage shed you told Ed and I about

That doesnt mean anything! Eddy protested. Shes not all right upstairs, either! I mean, look at her shes playing football with the boys!

The three Eds watched for a moment as the team ran another play. Lee had lightning-quick reflexes, and threw the ball at just the right second. The teammate she threw it to caught it and ran it for a touchdown.

BRAVO! Eddy yelled sarcastically. Lee turned, and grinned when she saw Eddy.

Why thank you, Eddy! she yelled back, and gave him a thumbs-up.

Eddy slapped his forehead, and the three Eds continued on. And what about them? Eddy asked, pointing at two sophomore girls sitting under a tree. They were talking about writing fanfic stories and illustrating them. One looked like a hippie, and one looked like another anarchist (without Ed and Spuds trademark patches).

Whats wrong with them? Ed asked. Im sure theyre very nice girls.

Theyre talking about writing stories! Who does that, anyway? Eddy wondered aloud. The three Eds continued towards Eds car.

But the Kankers are definitely freakier. I mean, theyre *still* weird, Eddy groaned. Youd think theyd have outgrown it by now!

Were weird, Ed added. We never outgrew it.

Were not *weird*, Ed! Edd objected. Were just A little different than some of the people at Peach Creek High.

Different as in better! Eddy grinned confidently. His high self-esteem had never decreased much. Were the EDS! We dominate!

Ed and Edd chuckled. Yes, Eddy, we dominate, Edd echoed.

Well, lets go my mom said she needed to talk to me about something, Eddy said, and the three Eds hopped into Eds Datsun. She says its really important, he continued as Ed started the car and pulled out of the parking lot.

The drive home was not a long one, and it wasnt more than five minutes later that the three Eds were back on the familiar cul-de-sac. Ed dropped off Edd and Eddy, and Eddy raced into his house, throwing his books on his bed before going into the living room where his mom and dad were waiting.

Hey, he said, sitting down on the couch. Sorry I took so long, we were watching the football team practice, yknow

We were wondering if youd started looking at any careers, Eddy, Eddys father asked.

What? Eddy was surprised by the question he hadnt given it more than a few seconds of thought. Do I need to know right now?

Of course not, his mother chuckled, but you really need to be thinking on it. You need to take something that interests you and turn it into a potential career choice.

What interests me? Eddy scoffed. I like money and girls. Thats about it. Well, maybe that wasnt it, but they were two deciding factors in Eddys life. He was currently on the lookout for a fantastic new scam, and as for girls, well, he had no real interests at the moment. Lee was far too strange to even consider. Dana was still nice, but the feeling wasnt really there anymore. Eddy was just happy to be her friend again that day in school they had talked all study hall, about everything and nothing at all. He had enjoyed the conversations and hoped there would be more.

Thats not much to go on, his father laughed. Youll have to think harder.

Eddy had never really thought about it before, but now it *did* seem important. He had no extracurriculars or special interests. How was he supposed to pick a career based on *that*?

I will, Eddy promised. But Ive got lots of time to worry about that Im just a senior in High School!

We just want you to be prepared, his mother smiled.

I know, Mom, Eddy replied. Im sure I will be. With that, he left the living room and returned to his room. He put on a LP and scattered his books around, wondering if he should actually attempt his homework or not. Was it really important?

No. But thinking on a major was.

Eddy had told his parents he was sure hed be prepared to pick. But deep down he wasnt so sure.

Three drops of Iodine, right, Edna?

Edna looked in her chemistry notes, and gave Edd a thumbs-up. The two were working together in Edds room on some Chemistry experiments their teacher had mentioned in class. So far their luck had been good. Now, Edd carefully added three drops of Iodine to a test tube filled with a bright green liquid. As soon as she added the Iodine, the liquid changed to blue.

A perfect reaction! Edd exclaimed, examining it in the light. Ah, how I love Chemistry.

Chems awesome, Edna agreed, taking off the rubber gloves she was wearing. Thats the last experiment, I think.

Edd set the beaker down again and looked at his notes. Yep, thats it. Edna and he quickly cleaned up the mess and flopped down on his bed, exhausted.

Chems not easy, Edna laughed. I didnt think it would take an hour to do three experiments!

I dont mind, Edd replied, and then sighed.

Something wrong, dude? Edna asked, a look of concern on her face.

Edd sighed. I feel so sought-after these days, and I dont understand it.

If it makes you feel any better, Id be perfectly happy if I didnt know you.

Edd laughed. Thanks, Edna.

Anytime, she grinned. So really, whats up with this sought-after thing?

Well, Brian told me a few days ago at practice that he thought Marie still likes me. I mean, that doesnt make any sense, does it? The days when the Kankers chased us around seem like so long ago!

Brian doesnt read into people well it could just be in his mind.

I guess I cant help but wonder about Megan and Sabrina, too.

Whys that? Theyve never shown any serious attachment to you after you broke up. Sabrinas got a boyfriend and everything. And Megans too busy with her studies to get caught up in a guy that should be obvious.

Ive always admired her dedication, Edd smiled.

The question is, do *you* still like any of these girls?

Edd frowned. Im not sure, he admitted. I mean, I look back on the old days with Megan and then with Sabrina with a happy feeling, but that doesnt make me want to go back. Do you know what I mean?

Yeah, I get it.

And as for Marie, well My memories with her werent pleasant but she seems fairly nice now I guess I just have to get to know her better.

Do you like being single?

Most of the time, yes. There are so many things to be concerned about when you have a girlfriend

Yeah, like, what if the girl is still in love with a guy from long ago.

Edd sat up and looked at Edna, who had a pained expression on her face.

His heart went out to her, as he noticed tears welling up in her eyes from behind her tainted blue shades.

Whats wrong, Edna? Edd asked, holding her hand. You can tell me Im one of your best friends, after all.

Edna sighed. I think Spuds still in love with Nazz.

What are you talking about? Edd asked, stroking his bristly chin. Spuds crazy about you! To put it in your terms, the boy is whipped if you asked him to kiss your ass hed bend over and pucker up.

Edna giggled. Charming mental image, Double D.

Its true! Edd continued. He really does like you! Theres no denying that he really liked Nazz, everyone could see that, but that was a long time ago! And now that Nazz is away at Peach Creek University, Im sure Spuds completely forgotten about her.

Shes coming home next weekend, Edna frowned. I told Spud, and he seemed incredibly enthusiastic. He even said, You should bring her with when you come to my baseball game! My God! Maybe he should just take *her* to the Homecoming Dance.

Edds eyes grew wide. The Homecoming Dance! I completely forgot! I suppose I should hunt around for a date, huh?

But Edna wasnt listening. Edd sighed. Im sorry, he apologized. I havent shown too much sympathy for your troubles. Im just surprised you care so much I never had any idea!

Neither did I, Edna sighed. I tried not to let on that it bothered me.

You havent even kissed him yet, and youve been going out for three months!

I know, I know I never bothered him any at least, I didnt think it did He knows what kind of person I was, er, am

We all do, Edd said. And even if you werent such an anti-romantic, wed still understand. I know *I* would want to kiss Spud.

Edna giggled. Youre a great friend, Double D, she said, sitting up and giving Edd a hug. Thanks a million. Im sorry I wasnt a very big help with your problem.

Thats okay, Edd smiled. At least Im not the only one with problems.

Dana sigighed and ran a hand thru her thick blond hair. She took another draw on her cigarette and exhaled, watching the smoke billow in front of her. Her back porch was a great place for a cigarette break a great place to cool off after a busy day.

I thought not seeing him over the summer and having no classes with him would do me some good, Dana sighed. She was not the type of girl who got hung up on guys. But Eddy had messed up her beliefs pretty badly. They had on-again off-again dated until their sophomore year in high school, when they finally called it off for good, agreeing to just be friends. They hadnt talked all that much since then, but she thought about him all the time. Sometimes she dated other guys, and of course they didnt last long. That was fine they were merely a passing form of entertainment to her.

But then there was today Dana murmured, taking another draw. The discussion with Eddy had left her giddy, a feeling she hadnt had in a very long time. Each time she saw him, it seemed he got more and more attractive. Now she could hardly keep herself from grabbing him in the hall and kissing him.

All I need is a way to get close to him again, Dana said to herself, stubbing out her cigarette. There must be something If only I wasnt so damn busy. Dana was taking lots of classes to aid her career choice as a photographer, and their first assignment was to shoot three rolls of film on *something* - no assigned subject, just be creative.

I dont even have anything Id like to photograph, Dana continued. Well, except for Eddy, she said, snickering. Suddenly, her eyes grew large, a lightbulb going off in her head.

Thats it! she exclaimed, jumping up, and instantly felt stupid for the display of enthusiasm, even though no one had seen it. Calmly, she walked back into her house, a smug smile on her face.

Eddys the most narcisstic guy I know, Dana whispered as she entered her room. Of course hed want to be photographed. She closed the door, and leaned against it, feeling happier than she had in ages. You can run, Eddy, she laughed. But you cant hide.
