Why are keywords so important?
Why are keywords so important?
What are keywords?

Why should I use them?

How can keywords help me?

Keywords are tags that you place on the content you submit to Fanpop so that other fans can find it. You don't need to use a lot of them, just the relevant ones. You'll want to use words that describe what's in the content. Who is in it, what episode it's from, etc.

Example:
supernatural, dean, 4x18, the monster at the end of this book
supernatural, dean, 4x18, the monster at the end of this book

This example is very simple. It's an icon from the show Supernatural [keyword], the subject is Dean [keyword], it's from episode 4x18 [keyword] 'The Monster at the End of This Book' [keyword].

It's also sometimes helpful to say what kind of image it is. For icons, wallpapers, fanart and screencaps it's unnecessary because there are already categories that will sort that for you. But episode stills and promotional photos all just end up in the photo section.

Example:
supernatural, meg, rachel miner, 6x10, caged heat, episode still
supernatural, meg, rachel miner, 6x10, caged heat, episode still

The above image is a little more detailed. It's from the show Supernatural [keyword], the subject is Meg [keyword], the actress is Rachel Miner [keyword], it's from episode 6x10 [keyword] 'Caged Heat' [keyword] and it's an episode still [keyword].
In this image I put the actress's name because more than one actress has depicted this character.

Batch uploading

If you are uploading several icons at once, please make sure that your keywords are relevant to each image in the batch.

Example:
supernatural, dean, sam, all dogs go to heaven, 6x08
supernatural, dean, sam, all dogs go to heaven, 6x08
These two icons were uploaded in the same batch, they have the same keywords. But not all of the keywords are relevant to each image. They are both from the episode 'All Dogs Go to Heaven' but obviously both Sam and Dean are not in both of these icons.
supernatural, dean, sam, all dogs go to heaven, 6x08
supernatural, dean, sam, all dogs go to heaven, 6x08
They should have been uploaded separately. One in a batch of 6x08 Dean icons, the other in a batch of 6x08 Sam icons.

Let's talk about why you should use keywords and how they can help you and your fellow fans.

Keywords help make your content searchable. If you're looking for something specific [an episode, character or type of image], keywords will help you find it.

Example:
Let's say that you were going to make a pick about Dean in the Supernatural episode 'The Monster at the End of This Book'. You wanted to put relevant icons on the options. In theory, the best way to find those relevant icons would be to use the 'Search Club' bar in the Supernatural Spot. You would type in Dean, The Monster at the End of this Book and/or 4x18, then choose 'images' > 'icons'.

This image has Dean in it and is from 4x18. It might be perfect for your pick. But it has no keywords at all. It would not show up in any search, no matter what you typed into the search bar. It is essentially nonexistent. Unless you happened to see this icon when it was first uploaded and showed on the front page, you'll never see it [unless of course it's reuploaded by someone else but that's a whole other issue].

supernatural
supernatural
This image has Dean in it and is from 4x18. But the only keyword it has is Supernatural. Which makes it pretty useless. Why would you go to the Supernatural spot and type Supernatural into the search bar? The only reason to use Supernatural in the keyword section is for outside search engines [ie Google] to be able to find it. It should never be the only keyword.

supernatural, dean, 4x18, the monster at the end of this book
supernatural, dean, 4x18, the monster at the end of this book
This image has Dean in it, is from 4x18 and has all the keywords necessary for you to find it! Out of the the thousands of icons that have been added to the Supernatural spot- you found the one you needed! That is the whole point of keywords. That is why they should be used with every image. Otherwise, you're just uploading air. The whole point of Fanpop is to gather content together and share it with your fellow fans. If they never see it, you're not sharing it.

Repeat content is pointless
Repeat content is pointless

Keywords would also help cut down on repeat content. If everyone used keywords and if everyone used the search bar to check to see if something has already been added [promotional photos especially!], then there wouldn't be near as many of the same images uploaded over and over and over again. I realize that's a lot to hope for but I figured I'd mention it because that is one of the ways that keywords could be useful.

This video has all the keywords necessary for someone to find it.
This video has all the keywords necessary for someone to find it.

I also want to give some tips on how to keyword videos. It's the same as the images but since there are no subcategories for videos like there are for images, it's more important to say what kind of video it is. Is it a fanvid? An interview? Special features? Gag reel? A scene? A promo?
Since most of the videos added tend to be fanvids, keywords that let people know what kind of video it is can be really helpful for those searching for non-fanvids.

Adding keywords is incredibly simple. All you have to do is take a moment to think about what you're uploading and what you would type into the search bar if you wanted to find it. It doesn't take that much time and is simple common courtesy.

Pass the message along!
Pass the message along!

I know that most of the people who will read this article already know the importance of keywords and use them. However, I think it might be helpful if we all pass this article along. Post links to it in spots that have poor keyword usage. Try to educate as many people as possible to why they should use keywords. Maybe we can see an improvement.

Some of you may not no this but if you have a mac you can only upload five images at one time onto fanpop.

Most of you probably don't care because you have a PC or don't upload images that much.

It didn't really get on my nerves before, but now I want to upload Heroes screencaps to the Heroes spot which I have a die-hard medal in and I know PC users can upload much more than five images at a time; especially if they have a die hard medal in the spot they want to upload in.

I know you can open loads of tabs but then again it is more work and annoying.

It's unfair on people who like to contribute anyway, so I hope there is some change in the image uploader for mac users.

P.S. If you joke and say I should have a PC or whatever, then very funny but no.

This article describes two different kinds of feedback to the Fanpop staff that are often confused for one another, and was last edited on 28 October 2008.

Feedback on the web site
Like any commercial software enterprise, web sites provide a product to their customers. In Fanpop's case, the product is a great site for joining together with other fans of topics that interest you in order to share quality content and make friends. But as with any product, feedback is very important to both maintain and improve the product. But feedback for maintaining the site is fundamentally different than feedback...

Here is a little poem (if you can call it that) that I wrote about fanpop. Believe it or not this actually took a long time. It is really difficult to find words that start with P. Let me know if you guys come up with anything better :) Ok Dave, Papa, Cliff, and Michael this one's for you!

Okay, first of all I don't write these articles but now I'm fed up! Can anyone please enlighten me because I am confused. What is the problem if I or anybody else posts more links/videos/images than another fan? If I happen to be the one with the most links/videos/images or whatever on Fanpop that is because I like helping out the website. It doesn't make any sense for people to feel jealous or attack me or other people for posting more content than them. That is the most absurd reason to get angry. I am posting content mainly to help out the website but I also know that some people on here...

Plugging away at our laptops
Plugging away at our laptops
It was just about one year ago that link and I were having our regular lunch meetups downtown in the Financial District of San Francisco. Years ago we shared a cube in Santa Clara at Yahoo! where we first met. Now we were being reunited just a few blocks away from one another and having lunch like old times. We decided to pay a visit to our favorite hole in the wall, the International Food Court on the corner of Bush and Kearny Streets. Most people would never have spotted this joint and even if they had they would pick up their pace and keep on walking. Being the adventurous (and cheap) guys...

Ten years ago, Fanpop made its presence on the Internet and people joined the site one way or another. I first found out about Fanpop when I did a Google Image Search on "link". That was back in May 2010, in which I signed up for the site as CHILDISHY; now I use my ReptarZolo account to match with my current DeviantArt account. All those years, Fanpop became cluttered with various types of violative content, including and especially pornography. With only four admins, I don't believe Fanpop will last any longer; this can be prevented if the admins promote some users, preferably those they trust, to become moderators and help clean up the site.
Of all of my peeves, this definitely bugs me the most. It's like if you're gonna pick a fight then at least have the decency to keep your original post. Don't call someone names, wait for them to fight back, and then edit your comment to subtract the insults so you can look like you didn't do anything wrong. It's just the most cowardly and kind of annoying thing to do. At least when I throw an insult I have the balls to leave it up and the respect to acknowledge that it may have not been the nicest thing to say and be up front about my snarkiness. People like that are why I have to screencap...

Ok so I'm sooo sorry If I waited to long to do the story I SWEAR! that i'm going to do it tomorrow i'm so sorry. I have to many problems and i'm very emotional the last couple of days and it's a big problem with my family and i'm very sad but i really will start the story I swear! I cant really tell u about my family issues but I need someone to talk to. But on the other hand if you can be my co-writer i would LOVE that but you have to be good like not basic, you know how when people push the story too fast...

Example for some of you dumbass trifflin ass cunt ass bitches: Yolanda dated this boy named Prince then he bullied her then he liked her afterwards the got married had a baby named Rolanda and Prince got hit by a car trying to see an old friend a cross the street 2 years later Yolanda sold Rolanda n got on crack, died, and lived happily ever after with Prince in heaven.
[note: when I first made this article "clubs" were called "spots" so just imagine anything that says "spot" actually says "club" ;)]

Well it seems like people are always asking how so here is a step by step guide on how to with images, yay! (there is a little thing in the FAQ but people seem to relate to images better)

Step 1: Make sure you are on the Fanpop main page

Step 2: Search for the spot first so there are no duplicates (if not then go back to the main page)

Step 3: Scroll down till you see this image and click "create new spot"

Step 4: Type in the name of the spot...

ATTENTION: This is just a user opinion's on what could be cool for Fanpop.

1. Customize Profile: Everyone likes to have a nice profile homepage, so my first idea is we have a chance of customize our own profile, with backgrounds, colors, fonts etc...

2. Medal Meter: I think every Fanpopers like to know how much are they far to get a medal on the spot, so my 2nd idea is FP give us the chance to see if we are far or close to get our medal.

3. Profile Viewers: How many and what users did check our profile.

4. Comment Reply Notice: Be notice in you updates when someone reply you in a comment.

5. Possibility to Change User name: Sometimes people don't like their user names...a opportunity to change would be nice ;)

Hope You Enjoy It

No more nudity and disgusting images!!
Please don't post nude or indecent pictures in any spot. There are children on this website. Please don't post anything you wouldn't want your own kids to look at. If an actress is being made fun in a picture please don't post that in their spot. And you should know better than to post naked pictures of them also. There is a place for those images and it's called PerezHilton.com. It's disrecpectful to post inhumane pictures of an actress/actor in their spot. This is fanpop not hatepop. Another issue that has been irking me is duplicate images. I know I have accidently posted duplicates before...

I feel like it is time that I tell you how much you all mean to me and how Fanpop has changed my life. About a year ago I became a stay-at-home mom. Which was really a blessing, however a huge stressor in my life was the fact that I had essentially no adult interaction during the day and no way of really feeling validated. I found Fanpop one day while browsing for Office episodes online. I saw the picks and it looked so fun, that I just had to join! Since then I have spent hours everyday on Fanpop. It is my outlet for all the stresses of being a young mother who is nearly solely responsible...

Okay, first off, that title is a lie.

Based on the way things are going with the new club update feature so far, I thought we could use some guidelines. These are not official, they are merely suggestions on how to decide on a new icon or banner as a team. Only large clubs have the new suggestion options, so there are thousands of people there whose opinions count! (Not that smaller spots aren't valuable, you guys rock just as hard.) The suggested steps for changing a club's look are the same up until Step 3 for both large clubs with the new poll feature, and smaller ones with user-run polls...
