Chapter Three
"Drawbacks"
Maya Herrera and Mohinder Suresh, Somewhere In India
"Calm down" Mohinder advised, in quiet, controlled voice, looking the woman in the face as she lay in the backseat, bleeding and hysterical. She continued to scream as the strange growths pulsated and throbbed on her fingers. "You have to calm down" Mohinder pressed.
She swallowed and closed her eyes, taking some calming breaths, before opening them again to see the green bubbles shrink slightly on her hands. "W-what is this?" she asked Mohinder, trying to inject some calm and composure into her voice.
"I'm not certain" he told her, looking directly into her eyes, to keep her focus away from her hands "But I think you may be manifesting an ability. Do you know of any previous instances when you have exhibited... super-human or... abnormal abilities? Or know of any relatives that have?"
"What are you talking about?" she snapped, but suddenly desperation and panic overthrew her once again "Can you stop it?".
"If it's what I think it is... quite probably, yes." Mohinder assured her "In fact, both me and Maya here had similar problems with abilities.". Maya ignored this and Mohinder suddenly wished he hadn't said anything, imagining she was thinking about how he had attacked her because of his own unstable ability.
A deafening 'bang' followed by a 'pop' and the hiss of escaping air, followed by a nasty scraping sound indicated that someone had shot out the tyres of their cab. "Hold on!" Maya shouted as the cab suddenly careered into a ditch.
"Maya?" Mohinder called, after having crawled out of the upside-down window. He crawled around to her side to see her hanging up-side down, bleeding from the mouth and not moving. "No!" he shouted, ripping the seatbelt off her and dragged her from the vehicle.
"Please wake up!" Mohinder pleaded desperately, shaking her slightly. His heart was racing what felt like it's last beats. Surely he'd already know if she was... Suddenly he felt a pulse and a wave of relief crashed over him, releasing the well of tears that had been building up in his eyes. "Thank you" he muttered, his face buried in her chest.
Oblivious to Mohinder, the car continued to billow dangerous amounts of thick, white smoke. A car screeched to a halt in the gravel nearby, with 3 suited men jumping out of it, holding guns. "Get on the floor!" one shouted, but no one heard, or listened. "Mitch, over here" another yelled, indicating marks on the ground where someone had crawled from the back of the vehicle.
Behind a nearby tree, the woman quickly whipped her head out of sight, closing her eyes and holding her breath. The pain in her stomach throbbed, she lowered her hand to it and felt something wet and sticky. Opening her eyes, she had to stifle a gasp. Through the hole in her clothes where she had been shot, she saw, mingled with the blood, an odd green-white liquid clogging the wound. It seemed to be healing... and quickly.
She quickly pressed up against the tree again as footsteps approached, cautiously. 'Please don't find me' she thought, knowing there was no hope. In her minds eye she pictured where they would be by now. "Wha!" came her scream as the tree suddenly toppled, with a ground-shaking crash.
"Stay where you are, missy." came a voice, as she opened her eyes to find a gun pointing in her face and a man standing over her.
"No..." she muttered, as she felt the strange sensation again and, looking down, saw the green bubble-shaped growths sprouting from her cuticles again.
"Stop it now!" the man ordered, waving his gun at her and sounding afraid.
Closing her eyes, she tried to muster any calmness she possibly could, until...
